Carbide precipitation in martensitic low alloyed steels contributes to the mechanical properties through precipitation hardening. A high number density of carbides is desired to maximize the hardening effect, which is achieved through the precipitation of carbides on the dislocations in the martensitic structure. In this study, the nucleation, growth, and coarsening of vanadium and molybdenum carbides during aging at 600 °C for periods up to four weeks were investigated. The work covers characterization with atom probe tomography, which showed that the nucleation of V and Mo rich MC/M2C carbides takes place on dislocations. The growth of these carbides proceeds by the diffusion of elements to the dislocations, which has been modeled using Dictra software, confirming the rate of the reaction as well as the depletion of carbide formers in the matrix. For longer aging times, particle coarsening will decrease the number density of particles with a transition from dislocation-based carbides to separate rounded carbides.

This study attempted to estimate the maximum size of inclusions in the ultra-low carbon Bake Hardening (BH) steels of automobile exposed panel. The Probable Maximum Sizes (PMS) of inclusions at the different steelmaking stages for BH steel with different sulfur contents were predicted by two methods of Statistics of Extreme Values (SEV) and Particle Size Distribution (PSD). The S content does not show a relationship with the PMS prediction of inclusions in the molten steel in which Al2O3 is the main inclusion, while the higher content of S leads to a larger PMS value in the slab, due to more number of large-sized Al2O3-MnS inclusions formed during solidification. The PMS value in the slab is greater than that in the molten steel for BH steel. Thus, the PMS of inclusions in the slab cannot be estimated from the molten steel samples. The SEV can be used to predict well the PMS values at different steelmaking stages for BH steels. However, the PSD of exponential function cannot predict well the PMS value in the slab for BH steel when considering all kinds of inclusions due to the large influence of small-sized MnS with high number density on the PSD of exponential function. When only considering Al2O3-MnS inclusions, the PSD of exponential function can make a reasonable PMS prediction in the slab, because the size distribution of Al2O3-MnS with large size can follow the exponential function.

High-strength aluminum alloys are important for lightweighting vehicles and are extensively used in aircraft and, increasingly, in automobiles. The highest-strength aluminum alloys require a series of high-temperature “bakes” (120° to 200°C) to form a high number density of nanoparticles by solid-state precipitation. We found that a controlled, room-temperature cyclic deformation is sufficient to continuously inject vacancies into the material and to mediate the dynamic precipitation of a very fine (1- to 2-nanometer) distribution of solute clusters. This results in better material strength and elongation properties relative to traditional thermal treatments, despite a much shorter processing time. The microstructures formed are much more uniform than those characteristic of traditional thermal treatments and do not exhibit precipitate-free zones. These alloys are therefore likely to be more resistant to damage.
