This research/article aimed to analyze the influence of an after-treatment system (ATS) on emissions of a heavy-duty spark-ignition (HD-SI) engine fueled with liquified petroleum gas (LPG), in the context of current Euro VI emissions requirements. The ATS is composed by a three-way catalyst (TWC) in series with a diesel particle filter (DPF). Emissions testing were carried out on an engine test bench according to homologation procedures, performing both world harmonized stationary cycle (WHSC) and world harmonized transient cycle (WHTC), to study the effects of the engine operating parameters on pollutant emissions behavior and ATS performance during steady and dynamic states, respectively. Instruments used were a gas analyzer Horiba MEXA ONE to measure gaseous emissions, HORIBA OBS ONE PN to measure particle matter (PM) concentration, and spectrometer TSI EEPS 3090 to measure PM concentration and particle size distribution (PSD). The results showed some important aspects such as the effects of engine speed and load on pollutant emissions formation and ATS performance, the influence of the three-way catalyst (TWC) on particulate matter (PM) reduction due to the relationship between volatile unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) and the emergence of nucleation-mode particles, stressing that ATS implementation is mandatory to meet the current emissions requirements.

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of the addition of an oxygenated additive (a mixture of mono-, di- and triacetylglycerol obtained from residual glycerin within the biodiesel production scheme) on the specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of a EURO 3 diesel bus during its daily route through the city. To do this, the urban bus was fuelled with five fuel blends of diesel (D), biodiesel (B), additive (A) and heptanol as co-surfactant (H). A portable emissions measurement system was used to measure the exhaust gases while an engine exhaust particle system with a dilution system, both installed on the urban bus, was used for nanoparticles measurement in actual operating conditions through the city of Seville. Results showed that B95A5 (95%v/v biodiesel, 5%v/v additive) and B90A10 were the blends that most increased NOx emissions (by 24.12% and 9.85%, respectively) compared to D100. On the other hand, B47.5D47.5A2.5H2.5 was the blend that most reduced total particle number (by 31.6%) and NOx emissions (by 12%). All in all, the oxygenated additive can be efficiently blended with biodiesel to reduce particle emissions from engines without diesel particle filter, such as those in urban buses in many European cities.

This work focuses on the potential for waste energy recovery from exhaust gases in a diesel light-duty vehicle tested under real driving conditions, fueled with animal fat biodiesel, Gas To Liquid (GTL) and diesel fuels. The vehicle was tested following random velocity profiles under urban driving conditions, while under extra-urban conditions, the vehicle followed previously defined velocity profiles. Tests were carried out at three different locations with different altitudes. The ambient temperature (20 ± 2 °C) and relative humidity (50 ± 2%) conditions were similar for all locations. Exergy analysis was included to determine the potential of exhaust gases to produce useful work in the exhaust system at the outlet of the Diesel Particle Filter. Results include gas temperature registered at each altitude with each fuel, as well as the exergy to energy ratio (percentage of energy that could be transformed into useful work with a recovery device), which was in the range of 20–35%, reaching its maximum value under extra-urban driving conditions at the highest altitude. To take a further step, the effects of fuels and altitude on energy recovery with a prototype of a thermoelectric generator (TEG) were evaluated.

This paper presents the results of a preliminary experimental study to assess the performance of biomorphic silicon carbide when used for the abatement of soot particles in the exhaust of Diesel engines. Given its optimal thermal and mechanical properties, silicon carbide is one of the most popular substrates in commercial diesel particulate filters. Biomorphic silicon carbide is known for having, be-sides, a hierarchical porous microstructure and the possibility of tailoring that microstructure through the selection of a suitable wood precursor. An experimental rig was designed and built to be integrated within an engine test bench that allowed to characterizing small lab-scale biomorphic silicon carbide filter samples. A particle counter was used to measure the particles distribution before and after the samples, while a differential pressure sensor was used to measure their pressure drop during the soot loading process. The experimental campaign yielded promising results: for the flow rate conditions that the measuring devices imposed (1 litre per minute; space velocity = 42,000 L/h), the samples showed initial efficiencies above 80%, pressure drops below 20 mbar, and a low increase in the pressure drop with the soot load which allows to reach almost 100% efficiency with an increase in pressure drop lower than 15%, when the soot load is still less than 0.01 g/L. It shows the potential of this material and the interest for advancing in more complex diesel particle filter designs based on the results of this work.
