Scientometric engineering: Exploring citation dynamics via arXiv eprints

Scholarly communications have been rapidly integrated into digitised and networked open ecosystems, where preprint servers have played a pivotal role in accelerating the knowledge transfer processes. However, quantitative evidence is scarce regarding how this paradigm shift beyond the traditional journal publication system has affected the dynamics of collective attention on science. To address this issue, we investigate the citation data of more than 1.5 million eprints on arXiv (https://arxiv.org) and analyse the long-term citation trend for each discipline involved. We find that the typical growth and obsolescence patterns vary across disciplines, reflecting different publication and communication practices. The results provide unique evidence on the attention dynamics shaped by the research community today, including the dramatic growth and fast obsolescence of Computer Science eprints, which has not been captured in previous studies relying on the citation data of journal papers. Subsequently, we develop a quantitatively-and-temporally normalised citation index with an approximately normal distribution, which is useful for comparing citational attention across disciplines and time periods. Further, we derive a stochastic model consistent with the observed quantitative and temporal characteristics of citation growth and obsolescence. A study of 25 years of publication outputs in the German academic profession

In the weak evaluation state of Germany, full professors are involved in the traditional social governance partnership between the state, and the self-governing higher education institutions (HEI) and disciplinary associations. Literature suggests that formal and informal governance could trigger changes in academics’ publication behavior by valorizing certain publication outputs. In the article, secondary data from three surveys (1992, 2007 and 2018) is used for a multi-level study of the evolution of academics’ publication behavior. We find a trend toward the “model” of natural science publication behavior across all disciplines. On the organizational level, we observe that a strong HEI research performance orientation is positively correlated with journal articles, peer-reviewed publications, and co-publications with international co-authors. HEI performance-based funding is only positively correlated with the share of peer-reviewed publications. At the level of individual disciplines, humanities and social sciences scholars adapt to the peer-reviewed journal publication paradigm of the natural sciences at the expense of book publications. Considering how the academic profession is organized around reputation and status, it seems plausible that the academic profession and its institutional oligarchy are key contexts for the slow but steady change of academics’ publication behavior. The trend of changing academics’ publication behavior is partly related to HEI valorization of performance and (to a lesser extent) to HEI performance based-funding schemes, which are set by the strong academic profession in the weak evaluation state of Germany.

CITATION PRACTICES IN RESEARCH ARTICLES IN INDONESIA-BASED JOURNALS AND INTERNATIONAL JOURNALS Udi Samanhudi, Aisling O’Boyle

This paper examines the similarities and differences in the use of rhetorical citations in research articles in two journal publication contexts in the field of Applied Linguistics, namely Indonesian Journals aimed at a local audience, and International Journals aimed at a global audience. Fifty Discussion Sections from published research articles were taken from the two publication contexts. Results of the analysis indicate a dominant use of integral citations especially verb-controlling type in the Indonesian local corpus. It is suggested that this citation type requires less demand on synthesising various sources cited while Discussion Sections in the International corpus make greater use of non-integral citations which indicates a succinct synthesis of various sources. In terms of function, referring to literature is the most salient function in Indonesian local corpus while attribution is the most dominant function found in the International corpus. Accompanying the textual analysis of citation practices in these journals, Indonesian academics as part of the community of the discipline were interviewed. Their perspectives indicate urgency for results of genre analysis studies to be transformed into teaching materials to assist especially novice writers in the field of Applied Linguistics in understanding English research article writing conventions better.

LITERATUR REVIEW: PENGARUH PEMBERIAN ASI PADA IBU POSTPARTUM DENGAN KEJADIAN POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Postpartum depression is the situation of depression experienced by mothers after giving birth. Postpartum depression affects the reduction or cessation of the process of breastfeeding to mothers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of breastfeeding mothers with the incidence of postpartum depression on postpartum mothers. The research method was carried out by a literature review study approach using several journal sources that were selected based on predetermined criteria. The data source is based on updated journals with limited journal publication from 2015-2021. The results were showed the differences in the level of depression in postpartum mothers are due to differences in responses or coping mechanisms possessed by each mother. The conclusion is the risks of postpartum depression were occured due to three factors, which are problems with breastfeeding, husband's support, and income.

LEV IVANOVICH MOSKALEV IN THE MEMOIRS OF RELATIVES, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES

This is not a regular journal publication and not just «memoirs». These are sketches written by different authors but all about the same person – Lev Ivanovich Moskalev. On the 4th of December 2021 it will a year since Lev Ivanovich has left us. Relatives, friends and colleagues of Lev wrote about him. Everyone in his own way and everyone about his own. In the mosaic of these sketches, various features and sides were captured of Lev Moskalev, the bright person who has left a deep impression on many of his contemporaries.

A Review of Culbert’s Book “Get Rid of the Performance Review”: An Impractical Suggestion

When selecting my topic focused on leaders recognizing employee contributions during performance reviews for my doctoral dissertation and post-doctoral research and publications, one book continued to appear in my reviewed article file Samuel A. Culbert’s: Get Rid of the Performance Review! How Companies Can Stop Intimidating, Start Managing-and Focus on What Really Matters. Although I cited this book in my dissertation and a subsequent journal publication to substantiate at least one dissenting perspective of the need for employee performance reviews, I struggled to fully understand Culbert’s perspective of this organizational process. A recent re-read of “Get Rid of the Performance Review!” prompted me to write a review and explain why I disagree with 99.9% of Culbert’s now antiquated opinion and why I believe his suggestion is impractical for organizational wellbeing.

Commercial involvement in academic publishing is key to research reliability and should face greater public scrutiny

The publishers of scholarly journals, particularly the large for-profit publishers, have failed to ensure journal publication is transparent in process and output. They have failed to sustain and invigorate peer review. By relying on the print tradition of publishing, which focuses on the short research report, they have failed to sufficiently support innovations which take advantage of digital platforms for archiving, distributing and critiquing scholarly work. We review the consequences of this for research reliability and call for greater scrutiny of for-profit academic publishing.
