The practical manual discusses the content, system and technologies of training in doctoral studies of higher educational institutions. Special attention is paid to the distinctive features of the dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Sciences and the analysis of the requirements for a doctoral dissertation. The issues of methodology of scientific creativity at the level corresponding to the doctoral dissertation are highlighted, recommendations on writing, design and defense of the dissertation are presented. Considerable attention is paid to the issues of personal organization and planning of the activities of doctoral students and all those who seek to write and defend a doctoral dissertation. For doctoral students and applicants for the degree of Doctor of Sciences, scientific consultants of doctoral students, heads of departments of the university responsible for the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel.

This chapter describes alternative credentialing practices related to competence-based open badges and their different audiences. The authors provide insights into different theoretical approaches to digital badging practices that could potentially support a competence orientation in continuous professional development and enhance lifelong learning. One aim of this chapter is to summarise the first European doctoral dissertation to address digital open badges and digital open badge-driven learning. The authors offer novel insights into reforms in education aimed at addressing students' individual interests and meeting the recognised needs of working life. They also present a set of innovative Finnish applications of digital open badge-driven learning in the context of educational research. Moreover, they describe the potential of badges as a tool to build ePortfolios. This chapter draws attention to the motivational effects of digital badging and the use of ePortfolios as an informative and interesting way to demonstrate competences in different contexts.

The article is based on the materials used for the author’s doctoral dissertation entitled Contemporary performance of 17th century German harpsichord toccatas in the context of instrument selection. Its main part is an analysis of the changes which occured in the harpsichord builiding before the end of the 19th century and the change in approach to early music at the beginning of the 20th century. The article is an attempt to answer the question to which extent instrument selection determines our today’s performance. Is it only a harpsichord being an exact copy of historical instruments that allows us to deliver an authentic and fresh interpretation? While listening to 20th century harpsichordists playing 20th century instruments (i.e., using contemporary models, not historically-based), we discover a different world of early music, which may even be more experimental than today’s performance sound-wise. It seems that the openness towards contemporary harpsichords while preserving historical practices at the same time may help discover new sound qualities in early music pieces.

Purpose: The aim of this article is to assess the possibility of applying the industry livestock valuation index as proposed by Karolina Pasula during the public defense of the doctoral dissertation “Directions and conditions for the standardization of accounting in agricultural enterprises” as an alternative method of valuation, taking into account sources of information and risk assessment on a farm. Methodology: The research process was divided into three main stages: (1) examining the possibility of applying the industry indicator for measuring biological assets proposed by K. Pasula for the valuation of livestock, i.e. pigs, as exemplified by a selected farm whose undertakings are known to the authors; (2) repeating the study from stage 1 on the valuation of dairy cattle as exemplified by the farm the activities of which are known to the authors; (3) on the basis of the conclusions of stage 1 and stage 2 studies, possible modification of the industry indicator for measuring biological assets, conducting research on a larger group of farms breeding livestock. Findings & value added: The conducted research confirmed the possibility of applying the analyzed ratio in the practice of entities that do not keep accounting books. The obtained results are characterized by high cognitive value as a measure of biological assets in relation to pigs. The valuation based on the industry measurement index in farms takes into account the risk which, as shown in the research, is an important factor influencing the value from the valuation.

The article is devoted to the good memory of the scientist-agriculturist Kharkov Georgy Dmitrievich, who worked for more than half a century in Williams Fodder Research Institute, starting with a graduate student, then as a junior, senior researcher, head of the laboratory and head of the department. He prepared 18 candidates of agricultural sciences, published more than 200 scientific papers. He defended his doctoral dissertation. High efficiency and diligence, deep knowledge of scientific truths, responsiveness, attentiveness, decency, zest for life — all this about Georgy Dmitrievich will remain in our memory.

When selecting my topic focused on leaders recognizing employee contributions during performance reviews for my doctoral dissertation and post-doctoral research and publications, one book continued to appear in my reviewed article file Samuel A. Culbert’s: Get Rid of the Performance Review! How Companies Can Stop Intimidating, Start Managing-and Focus on What Really Matters. Although I cited this book in my dissertation and a subsequent journal publication to substantiate at least one dissenting perspective of the need for employee performance reviews, I struggled to fully understand Culbert’s perspective of this organizational process. A recent re-read of “Get Rid of the Performance Review!” prompted me to write a review and explain why I disagree with 99.9% of Culbert’s now antiquated opinion and why I believe his suggestion is impractical for organizational wellbeing.

The article presents a large fragment of the authors glossary (dictionary) on the literature of Russian Germans (the authors definitions of literary concepts related to the literature of Russian Germans, based on its study in a doctoral dissertation and a number of articles). Writers - Russian Germans - Russian-German bilinguals, therefore the dictionary on the literature of Russian Germans should be presented in German-Russian format (articles in German and Russian). In the original literature of Russian Germans, there are phenomena and facts specific to this subculture. The Dictionary of the Literature of Russian Germans, explaining the meanings of words that may be unfamiliar, incomprehensible, or partially incomprehensible to the reader, makes it possible to significantly expand the circle of connoisseurs of the literature of Russian Germans, facilitates the perception of literary and scientific text.

On May 27th, 2021, we met virtually with Devon Woods. We asked him about his studies on beliefs and the relationship between beliefs and emotions and identity. We approached the decision-making process and its relationship to BAK (Beliefs, Assumptions and Knowledge). We also, discussed its relevance to English teaching communities, particularly here in Brazil. Devon Woods has always demonstrated to be amazed by the unseen and often unnoticed processes of interpretation that are involved in both personal and pedagogical types of communication. In the 1970s, he engaged in studies of learners’ and teachers’ cognition – their beliefs, interpretations and actions – and the interactions between them in language classrooms. As a product of his 1992 doctoral dissertation, we find his remarkable book “Teacher Cognition in Language Teaching” (1996), several articles, and the focus of the work of a number of graduate students published in the Carleton Papers in Applied Language Studies. The results of this conversation are what we present here in the form of an interview.

At least since Svend Bjerg’s doctoral dissertation, narrative and existentialist theology has, in a Danish context, been considered to be fundamentally opposed to each other. The main goal of the present article is to question this dichotomy. The theoretical foundation for this is an evaluation of the strength of Bjerg’s critique of Rudolf Bultmann and his program of demythologization. This is succeeded by a new interpretation of Johannes Sløk’s authorship focusing on the category of ‘proclamation’, which points to the practical possibility of formulating a narrative existentialist theology, utilizing insights from both theological traditions.
