CeO2/ZnO-heterojunction-nanorod-array-based chemiresistive sensors were studied for their low-operating-temperature and gas-detecting characteristics. Arrays of CeO2/ZnO heterojunction nanorods were synthesized using anodic electrodeposition coating followed by hydrothermal treatment. The sensor based on this CeO2/ZnO heterojunction demonstrated a much higher sensitivity to NO2 at a low operating temperature (120 °C) than the pure-ZnO-based sensor. Moreover, even at room temperature (RT, 25 °C) the CeO2/ZnO-heterojunction-based sensor responds linearly and rapidly to NO2. This sensor’s reaction to interfering gases was substantially less than that of NO2, suggesting exceptional selectivity. Experimental results revealed that the enhanced gas-sensing performance at the low operating temperature of the CeO2/ZnO heterojunction due to the built-in field formed after the construction of heterojunctions provides additional carriers for ZnO. Thanks to more carriers in the ZnO conduction band, more oxygen and target gases can be adsorbed. This explains the enhanced gas sensitivity of the CeO2/ZnO heterojunction at low operating temperatures.

Chitosan is an attractive material for biomedical applications. A novel approach for the anodic electrodeposition of chitosan–AgNP composites using in situ coordination with copper ions is proposed in this work. The surface and cross-section morphology of the obtained coating with varying concentrations of AgNPs were evaluated by SEM, and surface functional groups were analyzed with FT-IR spectroscopy. The mechanism of the formation of the coating based on the chelation of Cu(II) ions with chitosan was discussed. The antibacterial activity of the coatings towards Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 35984/RP62A bacteria was analyzed using the live–dead approach. The presented results indicate that the obtained chitosan–AgNP-based films possess some limited anti-biofilm-forming properties and exhibit moderate antibacterial efficiency at high AgNP loads.

A high energy efficiency, low charging voltage cathode is of great significance for the development of non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries. Non-stoichiometric manganese dioxide (MnO2-x) and chromium trioxide (Cr2O3) are known to have good catalytic activities for the discharging and charging processes, respectively. In this work, we prepared a cathode based on Cr2O3 decorated MnO2-x nanosheets via a simple anodic electrodeposition-electrostatic adsorption-calcination process. This combined fabrication process allowed the simultaneous introduction of abundant oxygen vacancies and trivalent manganese into the MnO2-x nanosheets, with a uniform load of a small amount of Cr2O3 on the surface of the MnO2-x nanosheets. Therefore, the Cr2O3/MnO2-x electrode exhibited a high catalytic effect for both discharging and charging, while providing high energy efficiency and low charge voltage. Experimental results show that the as-prepared Cr2O3/MnO2-x cathode could provide a specific capacity of 6,779 mA·h·g−1 with a terminal charge voltage of 3.84 V, and energy efficiency of 78%, at a current density of 200 mA·g−1. The Cr2O3/MnO2-x electrode also showed good rate capability and cycle stability. All the results suggest that the as-prepared Cr2O3/MnO2-x nanosheet electrode has great prospects in non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries.

Two corncob-derived carbon electrode materials mainly composed of micropores (activated carbon, AC) and mesopores/macropores (corncob carbon, CC) were prepared and studied after the anodic electrodeposition of MnO2. The capacity of the MnO2/activated carbon composite (MnO2@AC) electrode did not noticeably increase after MnO2 electrodeposition, while that of the MnO2/corncob carbon composite (MnO2@CC) electrode increased up to 9 times reaching 4475 mF cm−2. An asymmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor (ASC) was fabricated using AC as the anode, MnO2@CC as the cathode, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/LiCl gel as the electrolyte. An ultrahigh specific capacitance of 3455.6 mF cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, a maximum energy density of 1.56 mW h cm−2, and a long lifetime of 10,000 cycles can be achieved. This work provides insights in understanding the function of MnO2 in biomass-derived electrode materials, and a green path to prepare an ASC from waste biomass with excellent electrochemical performance.
