We study the single-spin asymmetry ATsin(2ϕ−ϕS) in the pion-induced Drell-Yan process within the transverse momentum dependent factorization (TMD factorization). The asymmetry can be expressed as the convolution of the Boer-Mulders function and the transversity function. We numerically estimate the asymmetry ATsin(2ϕ−ϕS) at the COMPASS kinematics with the model results for the pion meson distributions from the light-cone wave function approach and the available parametrization for the proton distributions. We also include the TMD evolution formalism both proton and pion parton distribution functions by using two different parametrizations on nonperturbative Sudakov form factor. We find that the asymmetry ATsin(2ϕ−ϕS) as functions of xp, xπ, xF and q⊥ is qualitatively consistent with the recent COMPASS measurement.

The lectures that appear within this chapter provide an introduction to soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). It begins by discussing resummation for soft-photon effects in QED, including soft photons in electron–electron scattering and the expansion of loop integrals and the method of regions event-shape variables. It then covers SCET specifically, including the method of regions for the Sudakov form factor, effective Lagrangians, the vector current in SCET, and resummation by renormalization group (RG) evolution. It covers applications of SCET in jet physics, describes the characteristic feature in jet processes of Sudakov logarithms, and discusses factorization for the event-shape variable thrust and factorization and resummation for jet cross sections.

The hard scattering formalism is introduced, starting from a physical picture based on the idea of equivalent quanta borrowed from QED, and the notion of characteristic times. Contact to the standard QCD treatment is made after discussing the running coupling and the Altarelli–Parisi equations for the evolution of parton distribution functions, both for QED and QCD. This allows a development of a space-time picture for hard interactions in hadron collisions, integrating hard production cross sections, initial and final state radiation, hadronization, and multiple parton scattering. The production of a W boson at leading and next-to leading order in QCD is used to exemplify characteristic features of fixed-order perturbation theory, and the results are used for some first phenomenological considerations. After that, the analytic resummation of the W boson transverse momentum is introduced, giving rise to the notion of a Sudakov form factor. The probabilistic interpretation of the Sudakov form factor is used to discuss patterns in jet production in electron-positron annihilation.

We compute exact thermodynamic geometric properties of the non-Abelian quarkonium bound states from the consideration of one-loop strong coupling. From the general statistical principle, the intrinsic geometric nature of strongly coupled QCD is analyzed for the Colombic, rising and Regge rotating regimes. Without any approximation, we have obtained the nonlinear mass effect for the Bloch–Nordsieck rotating strongly coupled quarkonia. For a range of physical parameters, we show in each cases that there exists a well-defined, nondegenerate, curved, intrinsic Riemannian manifold. As the gluons become softer and softer, we find in the limit of the Bloch–Nordsieck resummation that the strong coupling obtained from the Sudakov form factor possesses exact local and global thermodynamic properties of the underlying mesons, kayons and Ds particles.
