Abstract The turbulent boundary layer (TBL) heat transfer of CuO–water nanofluids on a continuously moving plate subject to convective boundary are investigated. Five different shapes of nanoparticles are taken into account. Prandtl mixing length theory is adopted to divide the TBL into two parts, laminar sub-layer and turbulent region. The numerical solutions are obtained by bvp4c and accuracy is verified with previous results. It is found that the transfer of momentum and heat in the TBL is more obvious in laminar sub-layer than in turbulent region. The rise of velocity ratio parameter increases the velocity and temperature while decreases the local friction coefficient. The heat transfer increases significantly with the increase of velocity ratio parameter, Biot number, and nanoparticles volume fraction. For nanoparticles of different shapes, the heat transfer characteristics are Nu x (sphere) < Nu x (hexahedron) < Nu x (tetrahedron) < Nu x (column) < Nu x (lamina).

Zinc, nickel and propylene glycol methyl ether were simultaneously removed from simulated wastewater in a column containing a counter-current packed bed and an electrochemical cell. Rectangular porous aluminum foam cathode and porous stainless steel anode were used in a plate-in-tank configuration. During combined biological and electrochemical treatment the wastewater flux was 0.00183 and 0.00915 m³.m̈².s̈¹ at a constant volumetric air flux of 0.0518 m³.m̈².s̈¹. Over a 72 hour treatment period the BOD5 was reduced by 32% and 55% for each volumetric liquid flux, respectively; zinc was reduced by 98% for both fluxes, and nickel was reduced by 95% and 82%, respectively. For sole electrochemical treatment of 48 hours, laminar and turbulent flow conditions were studied. Operating in the laminar flow region of 0.00183 and 0.00915 m³.m̈².s̈¹; zinc was reduced by 95% for both fluxes; nickel was reduced by 80% and 60%, respectively. For the turbulent region in the electrochemical cell, the volumetric liquid fluxes were 0.0137, 0.0229, 0.0321 and 0.0366 m³.m̈².s̈¹. Per cent reduction of both zinc and nickel in this region was less than that encountered in laminar flow. For all the fluxes in the turbulent region zinc was reduced by 82%; nickel was reduced by 55% at a flux of 0.0137 m³.m̈².s̈¹ and 60% at a flux of 0.0366 m³.m̈².s̈¹. Increasing electrode surface area as a means of improving heavy metal reduction by using rectangular porous material in a plate-in-tank configuration is not a viable option at higher volumetric liquid fluxes.

ABSTRACT Pulsar glitches offer an insight into the dynamics of superfluids in the high-density interior of a neutron star. To model these phenomena, however, one needs to have an understanding of the dynamics of a turbulent array of superfluid vortices moving through a pinning lattice. In this paper, we develop a theoretical approach to describe vortex-mediated mutual friction in a pinned, turbulent and rotating superfluid. Our model is then applied to the study of the post-glitch rotational evolution in the Vela pulsar and in PSR J0537-6910. We show that in both cases a turbulent model fits the evolution of the spin frequency derivative better than a laminar one. We also predict that the second derivative of the frequency after a glitch should be correlated with the waiting time since the previous glitch, which we find to be consistent with observational data for these pulsars. The main conclusion of this paper is that in the post-glitch rotational evolution of these two pulsars we are most likely observing the response to the glitch of a pinned turbulent region of the star (possibly the crust) and not the laminar response of a regular straight vortex array.

The United States and Israel share an uneasy alliance. On the one hand, the two countries need each other. The United States provides Israel with vital military and political protection that ensures its place in the Middle East. Israel serves as a dependable and important ally for the United States in a turbulent region marked by a considerable amount of anti-Westernism. Many Americans feel a cultural connection to Israel and appreciate having a U.S. stronghold in the region. Many Israelis are deeply grateful for American help, especially given Europe’s history of anti-Semitism, and dread the thought of ever losing U.S. support....
