The aim of this research is to help public transport managers to make decisions on the type of buses that should compose their public transport fleet, taking into account economic, environmental and social criteria from the point of view of sustainability. This paper fills a knowledge gap by including the social dimension of sustainability in addition to the economic and environmental dimensions. The original nature of this study lies in analyzing complementarities in the structuring of an efficiency and multicriteria problem. Our research analyzes Madrid public bus system data; the problem is structured in a comparative way between two analytical methods, a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and an ELimination Et Choice Translating REality (ELECTRE) III. Our research results show that two main groups of vehicles could play a part in part the theoretical solution. The main conclusions of this research are that (a) plug-in and induction electric vehicles are not comparable to GNC and diesel–hybrid vehicles in terms of cost, pollution and service; and (b) the ELECTRE III model provides more information in solving this problem than the DEA model.

In this article, we treat the problem of container storage in the export direction, exactly in the containership loading process. We propose an approach to the problem of container placement in a containership by describing a decision model to help decision-makers (handling operators) to minimize the total containers shifting. This is obtained by using a multicriteria decision method named Electre III (Elimination and Choice Expressing Reality) to identify the best location of any container. Here, we consider four criteria: the container destination, the container weight, the departure date of the container and the container type. This method has as input a matrix of performance and the subjective parameters and gives a ranking of alternatives as an output.

The number of green energy options in different fields is growing because of the need for reducing energy consumption and eliminating gas emission. One of these options is the use of eco-friendly cars produced by various manufacturers. Given the many available options and conflicting evaluation criteria, evaluation of such options becomes complex, and different multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches have been used to select the most suitable car in terms of eco-friendly car selection. Previous research has been somewhat limited with respect to consideration of interdependencies between evaluation criteria and multi-levels of preference. This paper proposes a new integrated MCDM approach with the capability for considering interdependent criteria for eco-friendly car evaluation and different levels of preference. An analytic network process (ANP) will be used to evaluate the levels of importance of interdependent criteria, and ELECTRE III will be modeled to include thresholds of preference. The introduced model, based on twenty-eight evaluation criteria, was demonstrated in a case study dealing with five alternative electric and hybrid cars. The results from this model were compared to a traditional decision-making method and better results were obtained from the model. The model can help users make proper decisions regarding their future car options in a comprehensive manner. Sensitivity analysis showed the robustness of the model under different setups.

Decision making is getting more complex and difficult in our daily life and business life. However, correct and fast decision making is the first condition of managing and directing. The complexity and uncertainty in decision problems have increased as a result of technological developments and changes in consumer demands. Most of the decision problems encountered contain many criteria. Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is to choose the most suitable alternative among many alternatives according to more than one determined criteria. Various methods have been developed for the solution of multi-criteria decision problems. ELECTRE III (ELimination Et Choice Translating REality) method, one of these methods, is one of the most widely used methods. The ELECTRE III method is a method used in the solution of decision problems involving uncertainty. In this study, the ELECTRE III method and its properties have been examined with an application. For this purpose, the problem of photocopy machine selection was examined with the ELECTRE III method in this study. The ENTROPY method was used to determine the weights of the criteria used in the decision problem and the ELECTRE III method was used to rank the copier machine options.
