In the current manuscript, we present the results of comparative analysis of seven species of Meromyza flies in the “variegata” cluster and of the evolutionary close species M. inornata, based the following criteria: 1) 14 external key features; 2) shape and area of the anterior processes of postgonites; 3) mtDNA CO1 region and 4) host plant diversity data. We could demonstrate the primary role of host plants in species formation inside genus Meromyza and calculated the timing of the divergence of M. inornata and the species of “variegata” cluster. Based on our estimates of evolution rate for mtDNA CO1 gene, we could conclude that that divergence of herbs happened before the speciation of grass flies Meromyza. Meromyza species, close to the ancestral species of the cluster, are adapted to the wide range of host plants. We revealed the most informative variables h1, S and Plant analysing data with the following statistical methods: linear discriminant analysis - LDA, regularised discriminant analysis - RDA, flexible discriminant analysis – FDA and probabilistic neural network - PNN. The highest classification accuracy was achieved using PNN (99%) and the lowest when using LDA (95.8%). When the Plant trait was excluded, the classification accuracy decreased by 14%. We revealed the significant trends in size change of the anterior process of the postgonite amongst studies species. This morphological structure is an element of male reproductive apparatus critical for the restriction of interspecies mating. We determined three branches of speciation in the “variegata” cluster and five trends in the evolution of this cluster, based on the external morphological features. We showed that M. variegata and especially M. mosquensis, the species closest to the ancestral haplotype, have the largest number of features typical of those of M. inornata. Based on the external features and the area of the anterior process of the postgonite, we reconstructed the phylogenetic position of M. elbergi in the cluster. In accordance with the obtained outcomes, we could conclude that the distribution, species diversity and the adaptation of the grass flies to narrow oligophagy were directly connected to host plant diversity. The adaptation to different host plants could be the main factor in divergence of grass flies and their evolution started later than the diversification in the Pooideae subfamily of grasses.

Treating patients with excessive gingival display (EGD) to provide them with a pleasant smile is a challenge to periodontists. A gummy smile can be due to excessive vertical bone growth, dentoalveolar extrusion, short upper lip, upper lip hyperactivity, or altered passive eruption (APE). In addition, many patients have a lack of lip support due to marked depression of the anterior process of the maxilla. In these cases, lip repositioning using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement could be performed. This article describes a case of EGD with subnasal depression. In the clinical examination, the presence of a marked subnasal depression was found, in which the upper lip lodged during a spontaneous smile. In addition to this, gingival exposure extending from the maxillary molar on one side of the mouth to the one on the opposite side was also found during the spontaneous smile. Therefore, the periodontal surgical intervention proposed consisted of performing a procedure to fill the subnasal depression with PMMA cement. This article describes a digital approach to plan the use of PMMA cement in lip repositioning in a patient with gummy smile and subnasal depression. The patient reported no postoperative complications. Six months after the surgery, the patient revealed a more harmonious smile than before, with reduction in the gingival exposure and new adequate support for and repositioning of the upper lip.

Abstract Background The calcaneus secundarius (CS) is an accessory ossicle of the anterior facet of the calcaneus and is usually asymptomatic. This accessory bone can be frequently mistaken for a fracture of the anterior process of the calcaneus. Few reports of symptomatic CS have been published, and physicians need to be familiar with imaging strategies when encountering chronic ankle pain or in case of suspicion of fracture of the anterior process of the calcaneus. Case presentation We describe the case of symptomatic CS in a professional soccer player injured during a match. First, computed tomography showed a large CS. Second, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated synchondrosis between the CS and the calcaneus, as well as edema (high MR T2 signal) within it, corresponding to posttraumatic edema. The patient was successfully treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy; no surgical management was necessary. At the 4-week follow-up, he was pain-free and returned to activity. Conclusion This case illustrates the role of imaging for the diagnosis of CS in cases of acute pain of the foot. CT, as well as MRI, helped to confirm the diagnosis of CS traumatized synchondrosis, which can be mistaken for a fracture.

The orb-weaving spider Poltys illepidus Koch 1843 is recorded from northern Thailand for the first time. The distribution of the species in Southeast Asia is extended northwest. The morphotype is characterized by an unusual small accessory protuberance on the carapace which is described and illustrated as a median anterior process without apparent function. AbstractThe family †Peipiaosteidae contains the genera †Peipiaosteus, †Stichopterus, †Spherosteus, †Yanosteus, and †Liaosteus, all from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous deposits of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. Although the family has taxonomically expanded since it was first established for †P. pani Liu and Zhou, 1965, the amount of detailed comparative data for many of the taxa involved is lacking. In this paper, we describe the osteology of the monotypic genus †Yanosteus from the Yixian Formation (Early Cretaceous) of China largely on the basis of a newly prepared, well-preserved specimen. †Yanosteus is characterized by a series of infraorbital ossicles (a characteristic of the family), a broad, rounded palatopterygoid, a robust dentary, an extremely small opercle and a subopercle with distinctly long and rounded anterior process and a posteriorly scalloped margin, a broad and weakly forked caudal fin, an elongate dorsal fin with more than 160–178 fin rays (diagnostic for the genus), and a short but well-formed pectoral fin spine. We use the results of this study to discuss the characters of the †Peipiaosteioidei and the diversity of †peipiaosteioids.

Abstract. The Miocene mica clay locality of Groß Pampau, known for numerous and partly spectacular finds of marine mammals is becoming more and more a prominent site that bears the potential to resolve questions regarding taphonomic relationships and to interpret life communities of the ancient North Sea because of its rich faunal assemblage including invertebrates and other remains of various vertebrate organisms. In the present work we describe a right periotic of Physeteroidea with morphological characters so far unknown from other sperm whales. The periotics of the middle Miocene Aulophyseter morricei demonstrate the closest resemblance to the Groß Pampau specimen in their overall appearance and in the general arrangement and proportions of single structures, particularly of the anterior process and pars cochlearis. A great similarity is also documented with periotics of the living sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus, especially regarding the shape and disposition of the anterior process and the bony element located dorsally to the accessory ossicle. Kogiid periotics differ strongly from that of the Groß Pampau specimen by having an inflated and short anterior process and, typically, three well-defined spines on it. A new taxonomic naming of the Groß Pampau periotic is not appropriate at this stage, although it might demonstrate the existence of a so-far undescribed physeteroid species. Additionally, its systematic position remains yet unclear and it is unknown at this point if it could belong to Hoplocetus ritzi, another physeterid, whose fragments were discovered in the same locality, or to another, already-described taxon, of which the periotic is still unknown.
