When it comes to determining a dividend policy that would maximize shareholder value, focusing merely on how much of the firm’s profit is necessary for dividend distribution and reinvestment is insufficient. It is critical to analyze the impact of their dividend choice on the stock price. The purpose of this study is to scrutinize the impact of dividend policy on stock price volatility. The report investigated the relationship between the dividend policy and stock price volatility taking 8 articles between 2010 to 2020. Likewise, following a systematic literature review method, the study critically analyzed the selected articles based on their strengths and weaknesses. The findings suggest that, in most of the cases demonstrated by authors, dividend policy has a significant negative relationship with the stock price volatility. The stock’s price volatility often decreases after the declaration of dividend payout ratio and dividend yield. Based on the results of this study, it can be implied that, managers of manufacturing companies and banks, those listed in the stock exchange, may be able to reduce the price volatility of their stock by increasing dividend payout and dividend yield. Since the study is limited to 4 databases, further studies could include some more articles from top-rated databases that signify dividend policy in diverse sectors to derive even more accurate results.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test the validity of irrelevant theory empirically by exploring the relationship between cash dividends, profitability, leverage and investment policy with the value of banking institutions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) markets. Design/methodology/approach The paper adopts Ohlson’s (1995) valuation model. The author estimates models by using static panel (random and fixed effects) techniques and the dynamic technique, namely, the GMM estimation. The empirical study covers a sample of 122 conventional and 37 Islamic banks listed on stock markets in 12 MENA countries over the period 1999–2018. Findings The empirical results show that dividend yield has no significant association with the value of conventional banks, whereas profitability, growth opportunity and leverage have a significant positive impact on the value of conventional banks. In contrast, the results for a sample of Islamic banks indicate that the dividend yield, profitability and leverage have a significant positive effect on the value of Islamic banks, whereas growth opportunity has no significant effect on the value of Islamic banks. Therefore, these results support, to a greater extent, the validity of the dividend irrelevance theory of Modigliani and Miller for conventional banks but would not be accepted for Islamic banks in the MENA region. Research limitations/implications This study is restricted to a sample of one type of financial firms, banking firms listed in the MENA countries. In addition, the study has dealt with one type of dividend (the cash dividend). Practical implications Highlighting the difference between conventional and Islamic banks is crucial to understanding dividend policy behavior and to providing investors information to be integrated in their valuation setting to make informed corporate decisions. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, the present study is the first of its kind that it draws a comparative analysis by testing empirically the validity of the Irrelevant Theory to banks in the MENA region covering a long time period in the recent past.

Subject. The article focuses on the formation and management of the securities portfolio. In developed economies, various strategies are used to manage portfolios. The tendencies permeate the practice of portfolio managers and in the domestic market. Objectives. We analyze the efficiency of portfolio management strategies based on the dividend yield concept in order to find the most appropriate one for the Russian market for mid-term investment. Methods. The study is based on general methods of logic, comparative and statistical analysis, graphical and indicative comparative analysis. Results. Having tested strategies based on the dividend yield concept, we suggested using an improved mid-term strategy, which may suit many investors, including institutional ones. The article presents our suggestions on the improvement of a strategy for creating and managing a securities portfolio in the Russian stock market, which is based on the Dogs-of-the-Do principle. Conclusions and Relevance. Drawing upon the dividend yield concept, the proposed strategy ensures the average yield exceeding those of DOW 5 and DOW 10 strategies, bank deposit and investment in federal loan bonds. However, it is inferior to IMOEX and MOEXBS due to the lose of the portfolio balance once a year. Securities within the strategy make up ETF to lure more investors. The inclusion of FXUS increased the average annual yield by 2.45 percent. The addition of FXMM significantly reduces foreign currency risks. To optimize the strategy, there should be REPO with the central counterpart and CCP-cleared REPO, which raises its yield through arbitrage transactions.
