In this paper, the influence of functional elastomeric substrate-supported layers for enhancing potential resistance capability against localized plastic failure of advanced high strength steels is considered based on a localized necking model of vertex theory. Application of this structure leads to postponing the plastic instability of the metallic part. By defining diffuse and localized modes of deformation in a general framework, the theoretical models are developed to predict necking limits at several stress states. In addition, the results of the Hookean and neo-Hookean elastomers are compared in terms of strain hardening with the anisotropy parameter of Hill’s yield criteria. Since necking band angle (NBA) is a principal factor for the necking prediction, its effect on bifurcation events is evaluated specifically for different ratios of stress rate, and quadratic and non-quadratic yield criteria. This analysis is performed by proposing a supported and yield-dependent necking bound angle (YD-NBA). All considerations are done by providing equilibrium conditions governed over the NBA. Finally, obtained results indicate good agreements between several theoretical considerations and experimental data.

Theoretical and experimental studies are presented to characterize the anisotropic plastic response under torsion loading of two nominally identical aluminum Al6061-T6 extruded round bars. Theoretical models are developed using isotropic (Von Mises 1913) and anisotropic (Barlat 1991) yield criteria, along with isotropic strain hardening formulae, to model post-yield behavior under simple torsion loading. For the case of simple shear loading, incremental plasticity theory is used to determine the theoretical elastic, plastic, and total shear strains. A set of experiments are performed to calibrate Barlat’s 1991 yield function. Several specimens are extracted at different orientations to the longitudinal direction of each round Al6061-T6 bar and tested under uniaxial tension and simple torsion to optimally determine all anisotropic (Barlat 1991) yield function parameters. During loading, Stereo Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used to quantify surface deformations for the torsion experiments and a baseline tension specimen to identify and correct measurement anomalies. Results show the isotropic yield model either underestimates or overestimates the experimental shear strains for both extrusions. Conversely, results using the Barlat 1991 anisotropic yield criteria are in excellent agreement with experimental measurements for both extrusions. The presence of significant differences in the anisotropic parameters for nominally similar extrusions confirms that plastic anisotropy is essential for the accurate prediction of mechanical behavior in longitudinally extruded Al6061-T6 bars.

A large number of criteria to model the onset of plasticity for ductile metals have been proposed by researchers in the last century. Strangely, very few researchers have tried to model the stress-induced crystalline phase transformation of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) according to yield criteria. This paper focuses on the question: is a yield criterion originally proposed for describing the plastic behavior of metals suitable to model the “pseudoelastic” behavior of SMAs? To answer this question, two yield criteria originally proposed by the present author are used to predict the initial surface of transformation onset of two different SMAs: Cu-Al-Be and Ni-Ti alloy. The predicted initial transformation onset surfaces of the two SMAs are compared with experimental results and existing theories reported in the literature and some significant conclusions and recommendations are given.

In this work, the influence of material models used in the FEM simulation on the springback prediction is investigated. The interest of this paper is to extend the knowledge base regarding springback predictions in numerical simulation. The springback effect of a V-shaped sheet metal part made of TRIP steel, with a thickness of 0.75 mm was investigated. The bending angle was set to 90°.  In the numerical simulation, Hill48 and Barlat yield criteria were used in combination with Ludwik's and Swift's hardening models. Achieved data from the numerical simulations were compared and evaluated with experimental test results. The experimental results showed the relation between springback and calibration force. The effect of specimen cut direction on the springback was smaller in comparison with the calibration force. The numerical results of the springback were not identical with the experimentally achieved springback values in most cases. Particularly, when a calibration force of 1 800 N was used in the simulation. The simulation results showed a good correlation between experimental and numerical results, when Hill48 and Barlat yield criteria were used in combination with Ludwik hardening law and calibration force F with the value 900 N was applied.
