This article analyses experiments on the kinetics of the internal electrochromism of thin (micron) films of hydrated vanadium pentoxide xerogel with point contacts. It describes a cylindrical model of electrochromic colouration, which was used to evaluate the concentration of the colour centres in the initial film and after additional hydrogenation of this film by plasmaimmersion ion implantation. When we compared the calculated values of the concentration of colour centres with the equilibrium concentration of protons in the xerogel, we saw that the mobility of the protons migrating from the depth of the film to the cathode region, which are involved in the electrochemical reaction, was not a determinant of the electrochromism kinetics. The rate of electrochromic colouration could be increased by the formation of layered film structures based on hydrated vanadium pentoxide, which have increased overall electron conductivity and, as a consequence, low faradaic resistance of the electrochromic cathodic reaction.

Purpose In this study, numerical simulations are performed to compare the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and reveal the difference of film cooling mechanisms of two models with the same geometries and cross-section areas of film holes’ exits at three typical blowing ratios (M = 0.5, 1 and 1.5). The two models are an elliptical model and a cylindrical model with 90° compound angle, respectively. Design/methodology/approach Three different cases are considered in this work and the baseline is the model with a cylindrical film hole. The same boundary conditions and a validated turbulence model (realizable k-ε) are adopted for all cases. Findings The results show that both the elliptical and cylindrical models with 90° compound angle can enhance the film cooling effectiveness compared with the baseline. However, the elliptical model performs well at lower blowing ratios and in the near region at each blowing ratio because of the wider width of the film hole’s exit. The cylindrical model with 90° compound angle provides better film cooling effectiveness in the further downstream area of the film hole at higher blowing ratio because of the less lift-off and better coolant coverage in the larger x/D region along the mainstream direction. Originality/value Overall, it can be concluded that although the elliptical and cylindrical models with 90° compound angle have identical hole exits, the different inlet direction and cross-sectional geometry affect the flow structures when the coolant enters, moves through and exits the hole and finally different film cooling results appear.

Soft robotic actuators are well-suited for interactions with the human body, particularly in rehabilitation applications. The fluidic artificial muscle (FAM), specifically the McKibben FAM, is a type of soft robotic actuator that can be driven either pneumatically or hydraulically, and has potential for use in rehabilitation devices. The force applied by a FAM is well-described by a variety of models, the most common of which is based on the virtual work principle. However, the use of a piston assembly as a hydraulic power source for activation of FAMs has not previously been modeled in detail. This article presents a FAM designed to address the specific needs of a hand rehabilitation device. A syringe pump test bed is used to find and validate a novel volume–strain relationship. The volume–strain relationship remains constant with the coupled piston–FAM system, regardless of load. This confirms a bivariate approach to FAM control which is particularly beneficial in the exoskeleton application as the load varies throughout use. A novel, fixed-end cylindrical model is found to predict the strain of the FAM, given a volume input, regardless of load. For the FAMs tested in this work, the fixed-end cylindrical model improves strain prediction seven-fold when compared with traditional models.

The objective of this article aims at the safety problems where robots and operators are highly coupled in a working space. A method to model an articulated robot manipulator by cylindrical geometries based on partial cloud points is proposed in this article. Firstly, images with point cloud data containing the posture of a robot with five resolution links are captured by a pair of RGB-D cameras. Secondly, the process of point cloud clustering and Gaussian noise filtering is applied to the images to separate the point cloud data of three links from the combined images. Thirdly, an ideal cylindrical model fits the processed point cloud data are segmented by the random sample consensus method such that three joint angles corresponding to three major links are computed. The original method for calculating the normal vector of point cloud data is the cylindrical model segmentation method, but the accuracy of posture measurement is low when the point cloud data is incomplete. To solve this problem, a principal axis compensation method is proposed, which is not affected by number of point cloud cluster data. The original method and the proposed method are used to estimate the three joint angular of the manipulator system in experiments. Experimental results show that the average error is reduced by 27.97%, and the sample standard deviation of the error is reduced by 54.21% compared with the original method for posture measurement. The proposed method is 0.971 piece/s slower than the original method in terms of the image processing velocity. But the proposed method is still feasible, and the purpose of posture measurement is achieved.
