The angle of repose in soil particles plays a key role in slope stability. There was a need for the investigation on the association between the angle of repose in loess particles and the angle of slopes. The fixed funnel methods with different particle sizes were carried out. The pressure of particle gravity weight was obtained based on the vibration stacking test. Four contact structures in loess particles were put forward including the triangular pyramid contact structure (TS), rectangular pyramid contact structure (RS), pentagonal pyramid contact structure (PS), and hexagon contact structure (HS). The particles transformed successively in four kinds of contact structures. The transformation of entropy value of the particles in different accumulation areas was discussed during the process of accumulation. The relationship between the natural angle of repose and the evolution of the contact structures was established. Combined with the existing experimental conclusion that loess particles transform in four stable states, in turn, the reason that the friction angle of uniform sand particles proposed by Shields in 1936 is 33° was explained. The formation theory of the loess angle of repose was well extended to speculate the formation process of the loess slope system. It is verified that loess slopes were mainly distributed under 30°.

AbstractThe contact structure of a population plays an important role in transmission of infection. Many ‘structured models’ capture aspects of the contact pattern through an underlying network or a mixing matrix. An important observation in unstructured models of a disease that confers immunity is that once a fraction $$1-1/{\mathcal {R}}_0$$ 1 - 1 / R 0 has been infected, the residual susceptible population can no longer sustain an epidemic. A recent observation of some structured models is that this threshold can be crossed with a smaller fraction of infected individuals, because the disease acts like a targeted vaccine, preferentially immunising higher-risk individuals who play a greater role in transmission. Therefore, a limited ‘first wave’ may leave behind a residual population that cannot support a second wave once interventions are lifted. In this paper, we set out to investigate this more systematically. While networks offer a flexible framework to model contact patterns explicitly, they suffer from several shortcomings: (i) high-fidelity network models require a large amount of data which can be difficult to harvest, and (ii) very few, if any, theoretical contact network models offer the flexibility to tune different contact network properties within the same framework. Therefore, we opt to systematically analyse a number of well-known mean-field models. These are computationally efficient and provide good flexibility in varying contact network properties such as heterogeneity in the number contacts, clustering and household structure or differentiating between local and global contacts. In particular, we consider the question of herd immunity under several scenarios. When modelling interventions as changes in transmission rates, we confirm that in networks with significant degree heterogeneity, the first wave of the epidemic confers herd immunity with significantly fewer infections than equivalent models with less or no degree heterogeneity. However, if modelling the intervention as a change in the contact network, then this effect may become much more subtle. Indeed, modifying the structure disproportionately can shield highly connected nodes from becoming infected during the first wave and therefore make the second wave more substantial. We strengthen this finding by using an age-structured compartmental model parameterised with real data and comparing lockdown periods implemented either as a global scaling of the mixing matrix or age-specific structural changes. Overall, we find that results regarding (disease-induced) herd immunity levels are strongly dependent on the model, the duration of the lockdown and how the lockdown is implemented in the model.

Abstract We introduce a compartmental model with age structure to study the dynamics of the SARS-COV-2 pandemic. The contagion matrix in the model is given by the product of a probability per contact with a contact matrix explicitly taking into account the contact structure among different age groups. The probability of contagion per contact is considered as time dependent to represent non-pharmaceutical interventions, and is fitted from the time series of deaths. The approach is used to study the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in the main Brazilian cities and compared to two good quality serological surveys. We also discuss with some detail the case of the city of Manaus which raised special attention due to a previous report of three-quarters attack rate by the end of 2020. We discuss estimates for Manaus and all Brazilian cities with a total population of more than one million. We also estimate the attack rate with respect to the total population, in each Brazilian state by January, 1st 2021 and May, 23 2021.

We conjecture a four-dimensional characterization of tightness: A contact structure on a 3-manifold Y is tight if and only if a slice-Bennequin inequality holds for smoothly embedded surfaces in Y×[0,1]. An affirmative answer to our conjecture would imply an analogue of the Milnor conjecture for torus knots: If a fibered link L induces a tight contact structure on Y, then its fiber surface maximizes the Euler characteristic among all surfaces in Y×[0,1] with boundary L. We provide evidence for both conjectures by proving them for contact structures with nonvanishing Ozsváth–Szabó contact invariant.

The static contact characteristics of heavy-duty tracked vehicle roller and track plate contact structure are analyzed, and the influence mechanism of the roller’s shape parameters on the contact stress is studied. According to the Hertz contact theory, a mathematical model of the roller and track plate contact is established. The contact structure model is established in ANSYS software, and the simulation results are compared with the Hertz theory results to verify each other. In the parameter optimization section for the roller and track plate, based on the Hertz stress calculation formula, a new method is proposed to establish a roller and track plate Kriging model and to globally optimize the model by the genetic algorithm (GA). After that, the relationship among the track roller radius R 1 , the track roller rim radius r 1 , and the track plate rim radius r 2 is analyzed. The results show that the difference between the radius of the rim of the roller and the track plate and the radius of the roller rim both affect the maximum contact stress. Changing the plane contact into the curved surface contact can reduce the maximum contact stress by 33%. This study can provide a reference for the design and manufacture of supporting track rollers and track plates.

The purpose of this paper is to study the principal fibre bundle ( P , M , G , π p ) with Lie group G , where M admits Lorentzian almost paracontact structure ( Ø , ξ p , η p , g ) satisfying certain condtions on (1, 1) tensor field J , indeed possesses an almost product structure on the principal fibre bundle. In the later sections, we have defined trilinear frame bundle and have proved that the trilinear frame bundle is the principal bundle and have proved in Theorem 5.1 that the Jacobian map π * is the isomorphism.
