Abstract A challenge in absolute calibration is to relate very bright stars with physical flux measurements to faint ones within range of modern instruments, e.g., those on large ground-based telescopes or the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We propose Sirius as the fiducial color standard. It is an A0V star that is slowly rotating and does not have infrared excesses due to either hot dust or a planetary debris disk; it also has a number of accurate (∼1%–2%) absolute flux measurements. We accurately transfer the near-infrared flux from Sirius to BD +60 1753, an unobscured early A-type star (A1V, V ≈ 9.6, E(B – V) ≈ 0.009) that is faint enough to serve as a primary absolute flux calibrator for JWST. Its near-infrared spectral energy distribution and that of Sirius should be virtually identical. We have determined its output relative to that of Sirius in a number of different ways, all of which give consistent results within ∼1%. We also transfer the calibration to GSPC P330-E, a well-calibrated close solar analog (G2V). We have emphasized the 2MASS K S band, since it represents a large number and long history of measurements, but the theoretical spectra (i.e., from CALSPEC) of these stars can be used to extend this result throughout the near- and mid-infrared.

AbstractTrade-offs are inherent to biochemical networks governing diverse cellular functions, from gene expression to metabolism. Yet, trade-offs between fluxes of biochemical reactions in a metabolic network have not been formally studied. Here, we introduce the concept of absolute flux trade-offs and devise a constraint-based approach, termed FluTO, to identify and enumerate flux trade-offs in a given genome-scale metabolic network. By employing the metabolic networks of Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we demonstrate that the flux trade-offs are specific to carbon sources provided but that reactions involved in the cofactor and prosthetic group biosynthesis are present in trade-offs across all carbon sources supporting growth. We also show that absolute flux trade-offs depend on the biomass reaction used to model the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana under different carbon and nitrogen conditions. The identified flux trade-offs reflect the tight coupling between nitrogen, carbon, and sulphur metabolisms in leaves of C3 plants. Altogether, FluTO provides the means to explore the space of alternative metabolic routes reflecting the constraints imposed by inherent flux trade-offs in large-scale metabolic networks.

Abstract We present Johnson-Kron-Cousins BVRI photometry of 228 candidate spectrophotometric standard stars for the external (absolute) flux calibration of Gaia data. The data were gathered as part of a ten-year observing campaign with the goal of building the external grid of flux standards for Gaia and we obtained absolute photometry, relative photometry for constancy monitoring, and spectrophotometry. Preliminary releases of the flux tables were used to calibrate the first two Gaia releases. This paper focuses on the imaging frames observed in good sky conditions (about 9100). The photometry will be used to validate the ground-based flux tables of the Gaia spectrophotometric standard stars and to correct the spectra obtained in non-perfectly photometric observing conditions for small zeropoint variations. The absolute photometry presented here is tied to the Landolt standard stars system to ≃1 per cent or better, depending on the photometric band. Extensive comparisons with various literature sources show an overall ≃1 per cent agreement, which appears to be the current limit in the accuracy of flux calibrations across various samples and techniques in the literature. The Gaia photometric precision is presently of the order of 0.1 per cent or better, thus various ideas for the improvement of photometric calibration accuracy are discussed.

It is shown that an extensive set of accurate ionization-chamber measurements with a primary polychromatic synchrotron X-ray beam transmitted through various filter combinations/thicknesses can be used to quite effectively estimate the absolute flux distribution. The basic technique is simple but the `inversion' of the raw data to extract the flux distribution is a fundamentally ill-posed problem. It is demonstrated, using data collected at the Imaging and Medical Beamline (IMBL) of the Australian Synchrotron, that the absolute flux can be quickly and reliably estimated if a suitable choice of filters is made. Results are presented as a function of the magnetic field (from 1.40 to 4.00 T) of the superconducting multi-pole wiggler insertion device installed at IMBL. A non-linear least-squares refinement of the data is used to estimate the incident flux distribution and then comparison is made with calculations from the programsSPECTRA,XOPandspec.exe. The technique described is important not only in estimating flux itself but also for a variety of other, derived, X-ray properties such as beam quality, power density and absorbed-dose rate. The applicability of the technique with a monochromatic X-ray beam for which there is significant harmonic contamination is also demonstrated. Whilst absolute results can also be derived in this monochromatic beam case, relative (integrated) flux values are sufficient for our primary aim of establishing reliable determinations of the percentages of the various harmonic components.
