Precision modeling of the hydraulic gear pump pressure dynamics depends on the accurate prediction of volumetric displacement in the inter-tooth spaces of the gear. By accurate reconstruction of the gear profile, detailed transient volumetric information can be determined. Therefore, this paper reports a non-contact gear measurement device using two opposing laser triangulation sensors, and the key geometrical models to reconstruct the profile with geometrical error compensation. An optimization-based key parameter calculation method is also proposed to find the unknown orientation of the sensor. Finally, an experimental setup is established, the performance of the device is tested and the geometric model is validated. Initial results showed that the method is able to reconstruct the target tooth profile and compensated results can reduce the geometrical error by up to 98% compared to the uncalibrated ones.

Geometrical errors of 2D gimbal mount axes are studied for laser tracer for the sake of realizing rapid detection for numerical control equipment. The high precision reference sphere, which serves as the reflection unit and is set on the base, avoids the influence on measurement accuracy caused by the movements of rotatory axes, and ensures that laser tracer owns large tracing angle. The nonlinear coupling relationship between the geometrical errors and the measurement accuracy of laser tracer is analyzed; the integrated geometrical error model of 2D gimbal mount axes and laser interferometry system is established; the error map of the measuring system is brought. The simulation results demonstrate that the measurement error of the laser tracer is certain and unique after the value and direction of all the geometrical errors determined.

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the Rapid Prototyping (RP) technologies. The 3D Printer has been widely used in the fabrication of 3D products. One of the main issues has been to obtain a high quality for the finished parts. The present study focuses on the effect of nozzle diameter in terms of pressure drop, geometrical error as well as extrusion time. While using polylactic acid (PLA) as a material, the research was conducted using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) by manipulating the nozzle diameter, and the pressure drop along the liquefier was observed. The geometrical error and printing time were also calculated by using different nozzle diameters. Analysis shows that the diameter of the nozzle significantly affects the pressure drop along the liquefier which influences the consistency of the road width thus affecting the quality of the product’s finish. The vital aspect is minimizing the pressure drop to be as low as possible, which will lead to a good quality final product. The results from the analysis demonstrate that a 0.2 mm nozzle diameter contributes the highest pressure drop, which is not within the optimum range. In this study, by considering several factors including pressure drop, geometrical error and printing time, a 0.3 mm nozzle diameter has been suggested as being in the optimum range for extruding PLA material using open-source 3D printing. The implication of this result is valuable for a better understanding of the melt flow behavior of the PLA material and for choosing the optimum nozzle diameter for 3D printing.
