<p>A low-cost restoration in patchy drylands aiming at recovering the ability of the ecosystem to capture and store water and nutrients is the installation of obstructions to break runoff pathways and retain these resources (hereafter, resource sinks). Field works in drylands worldwide have studied how the effectiveness of this action depends on the materials used to build the obstructions. However, the spatial pattern attributes of the resource sinks can also affect the effectiveness of the restoration and has not yet been investigated. In this work, we cover this knowledge gap by using a well-known dryland model to investigate how different initial amounts of cover and spatial distribution of installed resource sinks (i.e., random vs. regular) affects the recovery of the system. In agreement with field-work studies, our model results confirm that the installation of resource sinks can restore degraded drylands that are not able to recover naturally. More importantly, we found that a very small cover of resource sinks was sufficient to trigger the recovery of vegetation, while a high cover could lead to a complete failure of vegetation recovery. This was found for both random and regular distributions of resource sinks. However, a distribution similar to that of vegetation in the reference healthy system (i.e., regular distribution in our study system) was more effective: higher plant densities were reached for a given initial cover of resource sinks. Given the high efficiency of low covers of resource sinks suggested by our work, combined with the low-cost materials needed, the installation of resource sinks in severely degraded drylands has the potential to be a key contributor to the large restoration efforts needed to achieve land-degradation neutrality in the coming decades, particularly in developing countries.</p>

In this paper we illustrate a tight interplay between homotopy theory and combinatorics within toric topology by explicitly calculating homotopy and combinatorial invariants of toric objects associated with the dodecahedron. In particular, we calculate the cohomology ring of the (complex and real) moment-angle manifolds over the dodecahedron, and of a certain quasitoric manifold and of a related small cover. We finish by studying Massey products in the cohomology ring of moment-angle manifolds over the dodecahedron and how the existence of nontrivial Massey products influences the behaviour of the Poincar? series of the corresponding Pontryagin algebra.

In order to solve the problem that the current unloading operation will destroy the sealing performance of Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR) reactor vessel and the tightness can’t be restored, and to meet the application requirements that the original reactor vessel will be reloaded and operated after MNSR LEU conversion, the new unloading device is designed, which can be used without separation of reactor vessel. There has only one fuel assembly in MNSR. When the fuel assembly are unload for MNSR LEU conversion, the cover plate of the pool is removed, the cadmium string is put in, and the neutron detector is placed at first. After removing the drive mechanism and the control rod, and opening the small cover plate at the top of reactor vessel, the fuel assembly can be grabbed and unloaded by unloading tool only through the opening of the small top cover plate. The MNSR spent fuel has very high radioactivity. The auxiliary mechanical device can be used with unloading tools to realize operation in a long distance by lifting and level motion, which is convenient to shield and can reduce the works’ irradiation dose level effectively. Through calculation and analysis, the results show that the structure strength of unloading device is much larger than the actual load to ensure operation safety and reliability. The unloading device is easy to process and operate, and can be used in the practical operation of MNSR LEU conversion or decommissioning at home and abroad to simplify the operation steps and improve the working efficiency.

Abstract A cover-grammar of a finite language is a context-free grammar that accepts all words in the language and possibly other words that are longer than any word in the language. In this paper, we describe an efficient algorithm aided by Ant Colony System that, for a given finite language, synthesizes (constructs) a small cover-grammar of the language. We also check its ability to solve a grammatical inference task through the series of experiments.

AbstractThe present paper investigates the projective bundles over small covers. We first give a necessary and sufficient condition for the projectivization of a real vector bundle over a small cover to be a small cover. Then associated with moment-angle manifolds, we further study the structure of such a projectivization as a small cover by introducing a new characteristic function on simple convex polytopes. As an application, we characterize the real projective bundles over 2-dimensional small covers by interpreting the fiber sum operation to some combinatorial operation. We next determine when the projectivization of Whitney sum of the tautological line bundle and the tangent bundle over real projective space is diffeomorphic to the product of two real projective spaces. This answers an open question regarding the topology of the fiber of the Monster-Semple tower.

Directional solidification is a main method of mc-Si production for solar cells. The main impurities in MS-Si are oxygen and carbon. In this paper, an improved furnace was designed to reduce the carbon and oxygen impurity in MS-Si at unidirectional solidification process. Simulation results showed that the flow pattern of impurity gas at the top of the silicon melt significantly improved under the small cover conditions and the impurity gas eddy currents was also avoided. Experimental results show that the carbon and oxygen content inside the ingot were both significantly reduced when the eddy currents inside the crucible was suppressed and the average minority carrier’s lifetime of silicon block was significantly increased under the conditions of small cover plate. Meantime, the average cell efficiency of ingot was more than 17% under small cover condition which is significantly higher than that of the ordinary ingot.

AbstractIt is shown that a small cover (resp. real moment-angle manifold) over a simple polytope is an infra-solvmanifold if and only if it is diffeomorphic to a real Bott manifold (resp. flat torus). Moreover, we obtain several equivalent conditions for a small cover to be homeomorphic to a real Bott manifold. In addition, we study Riemannian metrics on small covers and real moment-angle manifolds with certain conditions on the Ricci or sectional curvature. We will see that these curvature conditions put very strong restrictions on the topology of the corresponding small covers and real moment-angle manifolds and the combinatorial structures of the underlying simple polytopes.
