AbstractThe cast aluminum beam is a key structure for carrying the body-hung traction motor of a high-speed train; its fatigue property is fundamental for predicting the residual life and service mileage of the structure. To characterize the structural fatigue property, a finite element-based method is developed to compute the stress concentration factor, which is used to obtain the structural fatigue strength reduction factors. A full-scale fatigue test on the cast aluminum beam is designed and implemented for up to ten million cycles, and the corresponding finite element model of the beam is validated using the measured data of the gauges. The results show that the maximum stress concentration occurs at the fillet of the supporting seat, where the structural fatigue strength reduction factor is 2.45 and the calculated fatigue limit is 35.4 MPa. Moreover, no surface cracks are detected using the liquid penetrant test. Both the experimental and simulation results indicate that the cast aluminum beam can satisfy the service life requirements under the designed loading conditions.

Vibrotactile feedback is a very desirable feature for many touchscreen applications, creating a more engaging and effective user experience. Although it is common in small electronic devices, this feedback is often absent in large touchscreen devices because it is difficult to provide vibration sensations and control the magnitude throughout the display. Because of their long shape (over 20 cm), touch bar displays are susceptible to the same challenges that other large display types face. Thus, there is a need for a vibrotactile actuation system capable of generating a freely positionable and fully controllable point of stimulation with satisfying force output at any point of a touch bar display. This study proposes a new spring boundary condition vibrotactile system as a way to provide such feedback in touch bar interfaces. A prototype system was created using two electrostatic resonant actuators and a thin, narrow aluminum beam to study the effect of different actuator excitation parameters on the beam′s response. By varying the number of actuators excited, magnitude, excitation frequency, and signal duration, a minimum vibration of 24.5 m/s2 could be created in the beam, with the majority of the beam able to exceed 40 m/s2. These results show that a targeted vibrotactile response at a given location in the beam can be achieved and sustained. This demonstrates a promising potential for generating a freely positionable and fully controllable point of vibrotactile stimulation at any point of a touch bar display.

This paper presents a Wavelet-artificial immune system algorithm to diagnose failures in aeronautical structures. Basically, after obtaining the vibration signals in the structure, is used the wavelet module for transformed the signals into the wavelet domain. Afterward, a negative selection artificial immune system realizes the diagnosis, identifying and classifying the failures. The main application of this methodology is the auxiliary structures inspection process in order to identify and characterize the flaws, as well as perform the decisions aiming at avoiding accidents or disasters. In order to evaluate this methodology, we carried out the modeling and simulation of signals from a numerical model of an aluminum beam, representing an aircraft structure such as a wing. The results demonstrate the robustness and accuracy methodology.

Abstract The Reinforcement with carbon tapes is the next step to increase the safety of using elements of engineering structures. The conducted tests illustrate the strength capabilities of aluminum beams reinforced with a CFRP tape. The aim of the conducted tests is to compare the bending strength of aluminum beams before and after the reinforcement. On the basis of the numerical analysis, the displacements and stresses in the modeled beams were also compared. Moreover, the possible applications of the reinforced aluminum beam in engineering structures are presented in this article

Implementation of improved instruments is used to detect damage in an accurate manner and fully analyze its characteristics. An aluminum beam has been used in this work to identify cracks by using a vibration technique. The simulation of frequency response feature was conducted using a finite element model to provide average measures of intensities of vibration. Two forms of wavelet packet transform (WPT) entropies Shannon and log energy were applied to identify the position, width, and size of the crack. The results showed that with an increase in crack depth, the amplitude also increased at certain crack sizes and for all crack positions. For two crack depths of 1.6 mm and 0.16 mm having the same crack size and position 12 mm and 60 mm, respectively, a 4.5% increase in amplitude was observed at a crack depth of 1.6 mm. Moreover, the amplitude varied inversely with the position. A 12.6% increase in amplitude was observed at a crack depth of 1.6 mm rather than 0.16 mm, while both depths occurred at the same crack position (75 mm) and size (20 mm). Experimental validation was performed on a cantilever beam with one crack. The maximum absolute error found was 7.5% for the crack position and 9.1% for the crack size. With the increase in crack depth, the obtained results decrease the stiffness of a beam in a single crack case.
