Emissaries from other worlds: Asteroids, science and mythology in The Color Out of Space and the film Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds

In this paper, we suggest a speculative comparison between the short story The Color Out of Space (Howard Phillips Lovecraft, 1927) and the documentary film Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds (Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer, 2020). We explore the similarities between Herzog’s specific interest in extreme phenomena of Nature and Lovecraftian Cosmicism. We observe that both authors have, to a certain extent, compatible views on the relationship between humans and nature: Herzog and Lovecraft seem to be interested in identifying and investigating humanity’s difficulty in coping with their insignificance when facing catastrophic events caused by indifferent Nature; both chose the same kind of landscape (iced lands, volcanic areas) and extreme natural phenomena (like meteorite falls); and they show a particular interest in characters connected to scientific experiences, and obsessed (even sometimes driven to madness) with the mysteries of nature. Our analysis does not suggest a direct influence of Lovecraft on Herzog, but a productive coincidence that can shed light on the film Fireball and its possible Lovecraftian resonances.

Werner Herzog: el cine como misión

El pasado mes de octubre, el cineasta alemán Werner Herzog visitó Barcelona para ofrecer una clase magistral en el marco del Serielizados Fest, el festival de series de televisión fundado por los creadores de la revista en línea del mismo nombre.

Anthropologie visuelle et représentations alternatives du corps en situation de handicap

This article proposes to reflect on models of documentary staging of sensory disability in open and closed environments. Based on an anthropology of the sensitive, the analysis will focus on the works of Frederick Wiseman and Werner Herzog in particular. The analysis tools of visual anthropology will allow us to examine the scenic biases and the singularity of the authors’ views on disability as well as the variety of learning methods used by the people filmed. We will focus on the description of the body in a situation of disability, on the relationship between the able-bodied and the disabled, as well as on the significant function that the social, medical and educational context can have in the situations described.

“Misterioso reino”

O artigo parte da discussão sobre a literatura comparada na obra de Gayatri Spivak (2003), Death of a Discipline, para elaborar um modo de leitura de perto tipicamente feminista e pós-colonial, motivado por saberes parciais e localizados e uma ativa relação com o texto lido. Uma vez formulado e impelido ao encontro da teoria pós-colonial, este modo de leitura nos ajudará a recontar a história de Fitzcarraldo, filme de Werner Herzog, especialmente através da perspectiva dos índios que, resistentes ao contato com outros povos, surpreendentemente ajudam Fitzcarraldo a navegar e tornam-se indispensáveis na sua jornada. A junção dos conceitos transdisciplinares propostos pelo feminismo com a abordagem necessariamente política da teoria pós-colonial permite a este artigo criar e aprofundar-se no “reino misterioso” que Herzog menciona no diário escrito durante as filmagens.

PRIMER TRABAJO DEL HÉROE: HERAKLES DE WERNER HERZOG

La obra del cineasta bávaro Werner Herzog ha sido ampliamente estudiada; su primer cortometraje Herakles (1962), en cambio, ha merecido poca atención. Este artículo tratará de solventar ese vacío. Después de apuntar algunos vínculos personales de Herzog con el mundo clásico, exploraremos las características principales de Herakles como héroe para esbozar los motivos de su interés para el director. A continuación, analizaremos el contenido del cortometraje localizando en él los trabajos descritos en la Biblioteca de Apolodoro y fijándonos en su traslado a la contemporaneidad. Tras este análisis compararemos el Herakles que aparece en el film con los Herakles del péplum y algunos personajes posteriores del director para acabar definiendo una idea de forzudo particular de la filmografía de Herzog que entronca directamente con la propia visión de su carrera creativa.

Książka Lekcje ciemności. Kino dokumentalne Wernera Herzoga (2020) autorstwa Magdaleny Kempnej-Pieniążek stanowi na pozór przewodnik po kinie dokumentalnym niemieckiego reżysera. W toku lektury publikacja objawia jednak swój pionierski charakter. Recenzent zwraca uwagę na interesującą próbę rozpoznania filmów Herzoga w kluczu romantycznej gnoseologii. Za szczególnie zajmujący uznaje pomysł Kempnej-Pieniążek, by wpisać twórczość reżysera w różne strategie poznania, a spoiwem dla nich uczynić motyw ciemności. Jak zauważa autorka książki, Werner Herzog podczas prowadzonych „lekcji ciemności” stara się odkryć prawdę o rzeczywistości w stanie kryzysu.
