The aim of the research is to study the influence of inhomogeneity in a control parameter of all partial elements in a ring of nonlocally coupled chaotic maps on the possibility of observing chimera states in the system and to compare the changes in regions of chimera realization using different methods of introducing the inhomogeneity. Methods. In this paper, snapshots of the system dynamics are constructed for various values of the parameters, as well as spatial distributions of cross-correlation coefficient values, which enable us to determine the regime observed in the system for these parameters. To improve the accuracy of the obtained results, the numerical studies are carried out for fifty different realizations of initial conditions of the ring elements. Results. It is shown that a fixed inhomogeneous distribution of the control parameters with increasing noise intensity leads to an increase in the range of the coupling strength where chimera states are observed. With this, the boundary lying in the region of strong coupling changes more significantly as compared with the case of weak coupling strength. The opposite effect is provided when the control parameters are permanently affected by noise. In this case increasing the noise intensity leads to a decrease in the interval of existence of chimera states. Additionally, the nature of the random variable distribution (normal or uniform one) does not strongly influence the observed changes in the ring dynamics. The regions of existence of chimera states are constructed in the plane of «coupling strength – noise intensity» parameters. Conclusion. We have studied how the region of existence of chimeras changes when the coupling strength between the ring elements is varied and when different characteristics of the inhomogeneous distribution of the control parameters are used. It has been shown that in order to increase the region of observing chimera states, the control parameters of the elements must be distributed inhomogeneously over the entire ensemble. To reduce this region, a constant noise effect on the control parameters should be used.

This paper proposes a code defined on a finite ring ℤpM, where pM = 2m−1 is a Mersenne prime, and m is a binary size of ring elements. The code is based on a splitting sequence (splitting set) S, defined for the given multiplier set ℰ={±20, ±21,…, ±2m−1}. The elements of ℰ correspond to the weights of binary error patterns that can be corrected, with the bidirectional single-bit error being the representative that occurs the most. The splitting set splits the code-word into sub-words, which inspired the name splitting code. Each sub-word, provided with auxiliary control symbols that are a byproduct of the coding procedure, corrects a single symbol error. The code can be defined, with some constraints, for general Mersenne numbers as well, while the multiplier set can be adjusted for adjacent binary errors correction. The application proposed for this code is a hybrid three-stage incremental ARQ procedure that transmits the code-word in the first stage, auxiliary control symbols in the second stage, and retransmits the sub-words detected as incorrect in the third stage. At each stage, error correction can be turned on or off, keeping both the retransmission rate and residual error rate at a low level.

AbstractAn X-band reflectarray antenna using 16 × 12 double square ring elements for satellite communications is proposed in this paper. The feed is a 4 × 3 elements microstrip patch array designed to create edge taper of approximately − 10 dB. A prototype with right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) is manufactured and tested, and the good agreements between simulations and measurements are demonstrated. The good performance is obtained with the aperture efficiency of 40.7% and the 3-dB gain bandwidth of about 10% which is beneficial to nanosatellites.

This paper discusses the application of metasurfaces for three different classes of antennas: reconfiguration of surface-wave antenna arrays, realization of high-gain polarization-reconfigurable leaky-wave antennas (LWAs), and performance enhancement of van Atta retrodirective reflectors. The proposed surface-wave antenna is designed by embedding four square ring elements within a metasurface, which improves matching and enhances the gain when compared to conventional square-ring arrays. The design for linear polarization comprises of a 1 × 4 arrangement of ring elements, with a 0.56λ spacing, placed amidst periodic patches. A 2 × 2 arrangement of ring elements is utilized for reconfiguration from linear to circular polarization, where a similar peak gain with better port isolation is realized. A prototype of the 2 × 2 array is fabricated and measured; a good agreement is observed between simulations and measurements. In addition, the concepts of the design of polarization-diverse holographic metasurface LWAs that form a pencil beam in the desired direction with a reconfigurable polarization are discussed. Moreover, recent developments incorporating polarization-reconfigurability in metasurface LWAs are briefly reviewed. In the end, the theory of van Atta arrays is outlined and their monostatic RCS is reviewed. A conventional retrodirective array is designed using aperture-coupled patch antennas with a microstrip-line feeding network, where the scattering from the structure itself degrades the performance of the reflector. This is followed by the integration of judiciously synthesized metasurfaces to reconfigure and improve the performance of retrodirective reflectarrays by removing the above-mentioned undesired scattering from the structure.
