Meditation is key to the art of Stoic living. But it’s not Zen or Buddhist meditation. If you are meditating like an Eastern monk, you are trying to quiet the chattering mind. If you are meditating like a Stoic, you are cultivating that busy mind. How does self-talk, and often self-blame, promote calm? Stoic living also involves monitoring the onset of disruptive emotions, and some Stoic-minded teachers have designed Stoic exercises for this kind of impulse control in their classrooms. Others practice Stoicism by looking to moral exemplars. A Cato or a Socrates, as the Stoics would say. But who is a modern moral exemplar? Take Hugh Thompson, the young American Army helicopter pilot who stopped the My Lai massacre. Would he be part of a Stoic pantheon? Moral outrage at the brutal massacre of 500 innocents prompted him to land his helicopter that day and stop the onslaught. Would a Stoic permit, or extoll, just action motivated by righteous anger?

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze and compare the media images and coverage of three countries regarding their security forces. For this purpose, researchers have examined the media image of the American Army in the New York Times, the Indian Army in Indian Express, and the Pakistani Army in The Dawn. Methodology: The researchers selected news stories of three sampled newspapers; New York Times, Indian Express, and The Dawn for one year from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2018 purposively for the content analysis. Spearman correlations, central tendency, frames of the stories in terms of positive, negative, and neutral have been examined. The researchers have examined coverage patterns of security forces at the object, attribute, and network levels in the light of agenda-setting theory. Main Findings: There are significant differences in the image of the armed forces. Indian Express covered the Indian army positively with the special emphasis on the success of the armed in internal military operations and the glorification of the military leadership. Similarly, New York Times covered the American Army favourably with a particular focus on external military operations for peace and security purposes. Whereas, The Dawn covered Pakistan Army differently. Applications of this study: The study will be helpful and of great importance for media owners, media regulatory bodies, military establishments, foreign and international relations. The study will also be a significant contribution towards civil-military relationships in geostrategic locations of the sub-continent. Since these countries have been involved in war-on-terror in this region as far as peace and stability are concerned, the study will be a roadmap for the peacekeeping forces. Novelty/Originality of this study: Few research studies have been witnessed so far on the media image of these countries. This study is new and different in nature as the military image of three different countries in terms of civil-military relationship has been measured on their mainstream media.

This chapter discusses the first phases of a major part of the British military strategy for 1777, the Philadelphia campaign. Howe’s plans called for a major offensive with the main army to seize Philadelphia to decisively defeat Washington and the main American army. Before boarding his brother’s ships for the journey to Philadelphia by sea, Howe attempted a series of maneuvers against Washington in New Jersey, but the Americans avoided Howe’s traps. Once Howe, his army, and supplies sailed, they had a huge advantage in mobility due to the Royal Navy. In the weeks at sea, Washington had to rely on limited and fragmentary intelligence as he tried to figure out Howe’s ultimate destination. It was during this period—mid-July to August—that Washington proved himself to be a true commander-in-chief compared to Howe, who acted more as an army commander and not a commander-in-chief.

[Polish immigrants in the United States and the armed conflict in Cuba in 1898 based on the Polish press in America] This article focuses on the conduct of the soldiers of Polish descent participating in the military action during the American‑Spanish War. The paper begins with the presentation of views on the war expressed in the Polish press published in America and the Polish lands. The main part of the work analyses soldiers’ accounts published in the Polish press released in America and compare them with the media’s depiction of the war presented in the pages of the Polish newspapers and magazines in America. Additionally, the article attempts to establish the motives behind Polish volunteers’ decision to join the American army. It was possible to find the answers to several important research questions such as how the participants of those events perceived themselves as those who fought for the interests of the United States, h

Using resources from the United Nations and in part from the US National Archives, the paper attempts to illustrate the course of negotiations and building of relationships between Yugoslav political representatives, representatives of the Anglo-American Army and the United National Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) during a period of political watershed moments: the consolidation of the Communist Party’s authority in Yugoslavia and the victorious siege of Nazi Germany by the Allied Forces followed by their assumption of responsibility for the post-war reconstruction of Europe, including Yugoslavia.
