In 1924 Tex Austin, an American showman, brought his world travelling Rodeo to Croke Park in Dublin. Coming at a time of significant social and political upheaval in Ireland, Austin's rodeo promised an entirely new kind of spectacle which was free from imperial or British connotations. Austin's rodeo, and cowboy paraphernalia in general, seemed largely immune from cultural suspicions despite the fact that few citizens knew what a rodeo actually entailed. The purpose of the present article is twofold. First it provides a detailed examination of Tex Austin's Dublin Rodeo, and a growing proliferation of cowboy culture in interwar Ireland. Second, it uses Austin's Rodeo and its aftermath, to discuss the rise of cowboy masculinities in Ireland. Done to highlight the multiplicity of masculine identities in the Free State, the article discusses the appeal of cowboy inspired masculinity in Ireland, as well as the mediums through which it passed. Such an identity was not all encompassing but it did exist, and was sustained by the entertainment and leisure industry. Its study reiterates the need for more work on the various pressures and influences brought to bear on Irish masculinity.

O conhecimento a ser trabalhado nas escolas do município de Morada Nova/CE, tem sido mostrado através do valor da cultura vaqueira e quanto ela é primordial para os munícipes. Este trabalho tem como objetivo geral o de Conhecer como as escolas de Morada Nova/CE tem trabalhado a cultura do vaqueiro nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem, bem como em detalhes os de Identificar como os professores tem trabalhado a cultura do vaqueiro nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem; descrever como essas práticas pedagógicas referente a cultura o vaqueiro tem sido trabalhado como tem transversal e explicar a importância do resgate da cultura do vaqueiro no âmbito da escola. Trata-se de um estudo de abordagem predominantemente qualitativo, caracterizando-se como uma pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. Apontou-se em virtude dos resultados, sua contribuição para a dimensão antropológica da cultura vaqueira e sua fundamental importância para o povo, considerando que este está ligado a ela e ela a este, configurando um emaranhado cultural intenso, presente como sangue que corre nas veias dos habitantes da cidade de Morada Nova. Assinalou-se, ainda para o fato do trabalho com a cultura dentro da escola, em especial na sala de aula, ser de muito valor para o desenvolvimento dos temas transversais trabalhados dentro da disciplina, bem como, a prática realizada pelos professores em conduzir os alunos aos locais onde se vivencia e onde esta caracterizada os indícios desta história vaqueira, nas vaquejadas, no museu e nas praças onde ocorrem as festas tradicionais do vaqueiro no município. Foi visto ainda que o professor necessita entender que sua missão não é somente passar os conteúdos que estão nos livros, mas, buscar outras fontes de informações na comunidade, em outros contextos sociais.

Chapter 5 examines issues of gender dynamics in the cowboy church movement. Church leaders use simplistic notions of gender, in combination with assumptions about the cowboy culture, and conclude that cowboy church needs to be a “masculine” environment to succeed. This chapter explores how these concepts are perpetuated and what “masculine church” means in practical terms. It also considers some of the more complicated and contradictory views held by pastors on the subject of women in ministry and women’s participation in church more generally. It contrasts the prevailing beliefs held by men about gender relations in the cowboy church with those of women, suggesting that the discrepancy between the two groups’ views may be problematic in the long term.

Serving as an introduction to the text and the research, this chapter explores notions of the American West, outlines different conceptions of both cowboys and cowboy Christians, and introduces key themes. The chapter suggests commonalities in the ways people express what western heritage/cowboy culture means to them, and how it connects people who are geographically dispersed. The cowboy church’s focus on connecting with the “authentic” cowboy is studied in conjunction with the construction of the meaning of the term “cowboy.” A discussion of closely related forms of evangelical Christianity provides an initial religious context for understanding the present-day cowboy church and its history. A brief account of the book’s place in the scholarship on religion of the American West, as well as of the book’s methodology concludes the chapter.

This chapter illustrates the BKAP model through an extended ethnographic case to show how network and knowledge processes interact to produce project-based innovation. An ethnographic case study in the same automotive setting found in Chapter 4 illustrates the emergence of creative projects launched in pursuit of innovation. Specifically, this chapter depicts how an automobile manufacturer’s prototype parts purchasing routine contrasts with two creative projects undertaken to redesign it. The chapter elaborates how trajectory strategy, consisting of the trajectory projection and scheme, and trajectory management, consisting of knowledge articulation, brokerage activity, and an additional category emerging from the author’s field data—contingency management—impact the two projects’ adoption. To lay the groundwork for how the two creative projects emerged, the author describes the “cowboy culture” presented in the Introduction, a culture imprinted within NewCar that gave rise to behaviors through which creative projects were pursued.
