Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the applicability of plant growth promoting microorganisms during restoration through re-vegetation of damaged topsoil. Methods : As the vegetation to be applied to the restoration site, Weigela subsessilis, Spiraea prunifolia, Pine densiflora, Pennisetum alopecuroides were selected. An attempt was made to isolate plant growth promoting microorganisms from the root zone of plants of the same species inhabiting domestic park sites and hiking trails. Plant growth promoting activities such as phosphate solubilization ability, siderophore production ability, IAA production ability, and ACC deaminase production ability were examined, and the species to be finally applied was selected and then identified. Among the strains whose plant growth promoting activity was confirmed, Arthrobacter sp. 1B2 and Paraburkholderia terrae 1P2 were applied to the genitalia and pine, respectively, and a pot experiment was conducted to confirm the activity. Results and Discussion : Forty-five strains were isolated from Weigela subsessilis, Spiraea prunifolia, Pine densiflora, Pennisetum alopecuroides and the IAA-producing ability and ACC deaminase-producing ability were confirmed for 16 strains whose phosphate solubilizing ability and siderophore-producing ability were confirmed. After selecting and identifying strains with excellent plant growth promoting ability, strains such as Cupriavidus sp, Arthrobacter sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas sp., Paraburkholderia terrae were obtained. Among them, Arthrobacter sp. 1B2 and Paraburkholderia terrae 1P2 strains were applied to genitalia and pine, respectively, and it was confirmed that plant growth was promoted. Conclusions : Bioassay experiments and field applications using plant growth promoting microorganisms have been mainly studied for herbaceous species (Grandaceae, corn, oats, etc.). However, in this study, the applied plants are shrubs class, which do not significantly grow in length, targeting damaged areas with high subsoil content, which are poor in environment and insufficient in organic and inorganic matter. Therefore, it is meaningful in that the activity of plant growth promoting microorganisms focused on absorption of inorganic substances, such as phosphate solubilization activity and siderophore ability, was investigated and the activity was confirmed by performing a bioassay.

We studied the quality of the biomass (straw) of perinnal grass seed crop: Festuca arundinacea, Festuca pratensis, Festuca rubra, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Phleum pretense. The biochemical composi-tion of straw: 36-83 g/kg CP, 400-555 g/kg CF, 46-98 g/kg CA, 647-918 g/kg NDF, 424-604 g/kg ADF, 53-86 g/kg ADL, 371-518 g/kg Cel, 223-314g/kg HC, with nutritive and energy value 10.3-39.3 % DMD, 8.8-36.2 % ODM, 7.08-9.14 MJ/kg ME and 3.10-5.45 MJ/kg NEl. We found that the straw substrates for anaerobic digestion, have C/N=37-92 and biochemical methane potential 254-313 l/kg ODM. The theore-tical ethanol yield from structural carbohydrates averaged 432-605 L/t.

Fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides) is a common ornamental grass because of its glossy foliage and showy inflorescence. However, there have been reports of populations growing outside of cultivation and demonstrating invasive tendencies. There is limited research of the chemical control of fountain grass in natural areas. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the impact of glyphosate, sethoxydim, and fluazifop on fountain grass. Treatments consisted of 2250 and 4500 g⋅ha–1 glyphosate, 262.5 and 525 g⋅ha–1 sethoxydim, and 200 and 400 g⋅ha–1 fluazifop; a nontreated control group was also included. The percent herbicide injury was determined visually 1, 3, 4, 6, and 10 weeks after treatment (WAT). Both rates of glyphosate resulted in 100% of the foliage injured by 3 WAT. The application of flauzifop and sethoxydim led to intermediate results ranging from 15% to 23% injury by 6 WAT, with no significant difference between active ingredients or rates. Nontreated control plants exhibited little to no injury throughout the study. Flauzifop, sethoxydim, and glyphosate all caused visible injury to fountain grass. For complete, fast-acting control, glyphosate is recommended. Herbicide control coupled with restorative plantings of native plants can help reduce invasive plant pressure and improve biodiversity of natural areas.

AbstractPennisetum plants (Pennisetum alopecuroides L.), displaying a dwarfing phenotype along with delayed flowering and mosaic symptom on leaves, were found in Beijing, China. Flexuous filamentous particles with a size of approximate 15 × 850 nm were observed in symptomatic leaves via transmission electron microscopy. Deep sequencing of small RNAs (sRNA) from symptomatic leaves and analysis of sRNA populations were then conducted to determine the genome sequence of the viral agent in diseased plant tissues. It showed that the viral agent had one positive-sense and single-stranded RNA genome, which consisted of 9717 nucleotides (nts) excluding poly(A) tail. The complete viral genome contained a large open reading frame, encoding a polyprotein of 3131 amino acids (aa). Sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the viral agent belonged to the genus Potyvirus in the family Potyviridae. In the cladogram it was most closely related to johnsongrass mosaic virus, sharing 72% nt and 65% aa sequence identity. This viral agent was provisionally named pennisetum alopecuroides mosaic virus (PalMV). Subsequently, it was confirmed that PalMV is the causal agent of this new disease in P. alopecuroides by Koch’s postulates and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis. Moreover, maize, millet, wheat, sorghum and rice plants were experimentally infected by PalMV via rub inoculation. Consequently, we proposed that PalMV could be a potentially dangerous virus threating a wide range of cereal crops.

A trial was conducted to investigate the germination percentage and emergence potential of nine imported temperate forage germplasms at the National Animal Production Research Institute, Shika, Nigeria. The seeds consisted of seven grasses namely; Beefsteak plant (Fructus perillae), Sweet elephant grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides), Wild foxtail millet (Setaria viridis), Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), King grass (Pennisetum sinese), Chinese sorghum (Sweet sorghum) and Zea mexican schard (Purus frumentum) and two legumes namely; Chinese woad (Isatis tinctoria) and Chinese alfalfa (Medicago sativa). A laboratory germination test and pot emergence trial was carried out to ascertain their viability. The result of the experiment showed that Sweet elephant grass, napier grass and king grass recorded over 90 % germination and the least was 30 % in Chinese sorghum. Chinese alfalfa and wild foxtail millet had least germination percentage with 100 % Seed dormancy.Highest emergence rate, seedling length and seedling vigour indexwere observed in king grass than the other forage germplasms. The highest percentage emergence was obtained in king grass > sweet elephant grass > napier grass > Zea mexican schard > beefsteak plant > Chinese woad > Chinese sorghum, respectively. It was concluded that these forages can successfully be adopted as animal feed resources in Nigeria and therefore, recommended formulti-locational trials in all the ecological zones of the country.
