Natural wood textures are appreciated in most forest products industries for their appealing visual characteristics including grain and color, but also their fine surface tactile sensation. The following presents an ultraviolet (UV)-curable inkjet technology printing 3D wood texture on wood-based substrate by image processing and surface treatment. The UV printing was created from scanned digital images of a real wood surface and processed in graphics software. The images were converted to grayscale graphics by selecting color range and setting the parameter of fuzziness. The grayscale images were printed as 3D texture height simulation on the substrates and coated by printing the color images as texture mapping. Based on these wood texture digital images, the marquetry art is also considered in the images processing design to increase the artistry of the printed materials. The medium-density fiberboard (MDF) coated printing marquetry surface replicate realistic natural 3D wood texture surface layers on wood-based panels and imitated the effect of handcrafted wood art works. This study proves that printing 3D texture surface material is creative and valuable with ecologically friendly, low-consumption UV-curable inkjet technology and provides a feasible and scalable approach in flooring/furniture/decorative architectural panels.

Abstract In the past year, we have become aware of a new mechanism of severe electrical injury ascribed to fractal wood art. This type of art has become increasingly popular and deadly due to exponential popularity in the use of Youtube type video teaching. This manuscript is one of the initial descriptions of the injury mode, presentation, treatment, and outcomes from four such cases treated at our institution. Additionally, we elicit a call for action in preventing further similar unnecessary injuries and deaths.

Wood is a kind of material that humanity has used continuously since the day it existed. Wood materials that have been used in many areas of life in the historical process has also been preferred in handicrafts. Moreover, these materials have been used continuously in Turkish Handicrafts from past to present. Especially the Anatolian Seljuks showed original examples of wood materials art in works such as pulpit, mihrab, sarcophagus, lectern, door, and window wings. Kündekari and wood carving technique, which is a kind of interlacing technique in decoration, has been applied in walnut, ebony, rose, and oak wood materials. On the other hand, different surface coating processes such as painting and polishing were applied to these materials for decoration. Wood art continued to increase with wood carving techniques such as inlay, openwork bonding, tarsi, and Edirnekari in the Ottoman. There has been an increase in the variety of wood materials used with the increasing techniques. Hence, original wood samples were given in Ottoman wood art with a variety of materials and rich decoration techniques.

Abstract The art of pyrography, burning designs in wood, dates back to prehistory. Risks of traditional techniques included cutaneous burns and airway injury. Fractal wood burning is a niche technique using a high-voltage electrical source to burn branched designs into wood. While this technique has grown in popularity, the associated risks are not well understood. We describe a patient who presented to our burn center after sustaining high-voltage electrical injuries while making fractal wood art using an improvised a high-voltage transformer. During the wood-burning process, he contacted the electrodes and suffered full-thickness electrical burns to the neck, chest, and bilateral upper extremities. Bilateral upper extremity fasciotomies were performed on admission. Multiple subsequent operations culminated with autografting to most of the wounds and complex reconstruction of the left thumb. In evaluating online news reports, we found 25 unique individuals with death or injury attributed to fractal wood burning from July 2016 to January 2020. Five sustained substantial injuries, while 20 reportedly died. Ages ranged from 17 years old to the 60s. One death and one injury occurred in females, with the remainder of reports involving males. Of the survivors, four sustained significant upper extremity electrical injuries and three suffered cardiac arrest at the time of injury. Fractal wood burning is associated with devastating high-voltage electrical injuries and death. Prevention efforts should be focused on education about the potential for death and permanently disabling injuries from this art form.
