Candida metapsilosis is a member of the C. parapsilosis species complex, a group of opportunistic human pathogens. Of all the members of this complex, C. metapsilosis is the least virulent, and accounts for a small proportion of invasive Candida infections. Previous studies established that all C. metapsilosis isolates are hybrids, originating from a single hybridization event between two lineages, parent A and parent B. Here, we use MinION and Illumina sequencing to characterize a C. metapsilosis isolate that originated from a separate hybridization. One of the parents of the new isolate is very closely related to parent A. However, the other parent (parent C) is not the same as parent B. Unlike C. metapsilosis AB isolates, the C. metapsilosis AC isolate has not undergone introgression at the Mating Type-like Locus. In addition, the A and C haplotypes are not fully collinear. The C. metapsilosis AC isolate has undergone Loss of Heterozygosity (LOH) with a preference for haplotype A, indicating that this isolate is in the early stages of genome stabilization.

Abstract Background In recent years, Candida parapsilosis is recognized as a species complex and is composed of Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto, Candida orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis. Candida parapsilosis complex prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is rare and the survival rate is still low despite of optimal therapeutic strategies. In our report, it is novel to report cases as Candida parapsilosis complex PVE at species and identify Candida parapsilosis using MALDI-TOF MS. Case presentation A series of 4 cases of Candida parapsilosis complex PVE from our institution was reported. Three were infected by Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto and one was infected by Candida metapsilosis. The condition of two cases got better and the other died. Conclusions More attention should be paid to Candida parapsilosis complex PVE and early diagnosis and prompt antibiotic therapy may play a role in the treatment for Candida parapsilosis complex PVE. It is recommended to identify Candida parapsilosis complex at species level and MALDI-TOF MS as an easy, fast and efficient identification method is worth promoting in clinical microbiology

Los derrames de petróleo y sus derivados producen fuertes impactos en el equilibrio de los ecosistemas, ya que no sólo arrasan con su biodiversidad, sino que dejan graves consecuencias que dificultan su capacidad de resiliencia. Se ha reportado que microorganismos de zonas contaminadas con hidrocarburos desarrollan habilidades para la degradación de estos contaminantes. Con el propósito de determinar la capacidad de microorganismos nativos de suelo contaminado con petróleo para degradar el queroseno, se seleccionaron dos cepas de microorganismos previamente aisladas de un suelo expuesto a derivados del petróleo, que mostraron tolerancia al contaminante, mediante pruebas de concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI). Las cepas seleccionadas se evaluaron mediante bioensayos de remoción de hidrocarburos alifáticos saturados (n-alcanos de C-10 a C-16) que fueron analizados por comparación de abundancias relativas usando un cromatógrafo de gases-masas (GC-MS). Los microorganismos se identificaron como Candida metapsilosis SH1 y Burkholderia cepacia SH3, con tolerancia a concentraciones mayores del 10% de queroseno y capacidad de biodegradación selectiva de hidrocarburos de cadenas largas, causando fraccionamiento correlacionado con el aumento de hidrocarburos de cadenas cortas (C10 a C12). Estos resultados evidencian aplicaciones promisorias de los microorganismos analizados para mitigar la contaminación de sitios afectados por hidrocarburos.
