The conventional three-phase alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) converter can be modified using two isolated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) as by-pass switches connected to tapping points on the secondary side of the transformer. This scheme yields a reduction in both harmonic contents and reactive volt-ampere absorption. This modified converter possibly eliminates the need for an on-load tap-changer on the converter transformer. The modified AC/DC converter is fully analyzed and implemented under balanced conditions using MATLAB-Simulink. The expressions of the output DC voltage are derived for different cases. The supply current harmonic contents, the reactive power absorption and the power factor have been compared for three schemes; the conventional bridge, the modified bridge using one by-pass IGBT valve and the modified bridge with two by-pass IGBT valves.

Power electronic circuits in modern power supplies have improved the conversion efficiency on the one hand but have also increased harmonic emissions. Harmonic currents from the operation of these units affect the voltage waveforms of the network and could compromise the reliability of the network. Load and source non-linearity can, therefore, limit the renewable source’s hosting capacity in the grid, as a large number of inverter units may increase the harmonic distortions. As a result, voltage and current distortions could reach unbearable levels in devices connected to the network. Harmonic estimation modelling often relies on measurement data, and differences may appear in mathematical simulations as the harmonic aggregation or cancellation may generate different results due to the inaccuracies and limitations of the measurement device. In this paper, the effect of harmonic currents cancellation on the aggregation of different load currents is evaluated to show its impact in the network by presenting a comparison between the measurement and mathematical aggregation of harmonics. Furthermore, the harmonic cancellation phenomenon is also qualified for multiple loads connected to the power supply.

A large number of harmonics will be generated in the process of transforming high frequency and high voltage alternating current (AC) into a constant frequency and constant voltage through a power conversion system when the high-speed motor is used as a generator. The phase-shifting reactor is used to eliminate harmonics for high-speed generator power conversion systems, and LCL filter and adjustable inductance filter are used to eliminate harmonics for high-speed motor power supply system in this paper. The adjustable inductance filter can adjust the inductance value in time according to the change of the output frequency of the inverter. The results verify the effectiveness of the methods used, and provide a theoretical basis for the wide application of high-speed motor by simulation.

Temperature effects on luminaires is usually referred to light output, that is luminaire efficiency. However, the effect on electrical magnitudes as power, current and third current harmonic is not widely studied. One major technology, Light-emitting- diode (LED) is fast replacing the other types of lighting all over the world, this opens the interrogate of how is temperature affecting LED luminaires development and how different is this effect compared to other technologies. This paper analyses these effects on LED luminaires of different wattage and one high pressure SODIUM luminaire. Luminaires were measure in two different environments, the first stage with a constant temperature-controlled system (±1°C) and the second one without a temperature-controlled system. The tests were performed on three samples of LED luminaires with different power ratings and one sample of SODIUM luminaire. It was found that the third current harmonic is directly related to temperature while power and current are inversely related.
