Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are capable of producing high-quality output voltage and handling large amounts of power. This reduces the size of the filter while also simplifying the circuitry. As a result, they have a wide range of applications in industries, particularly in smart grids. The input voltage boosting feature is required to use the MLI with renewable energy. Moreover, many components are required to get higher output voltage levels that add weight and cost to the circuit. Numerous MLI topologies have been identified to minimize the losses, device count, and device ratings. A seven-level modified H-bridge inverter with a reduced component count, and reduced THD is presented in this paper. Two DC sources with six IGBTs have been used to generate a seven-level output voltage, and the Aquila Optimizer (AO) has been implemented to get the regulated output. MATLAB/Simulink environment has been used for designing the simulation model. Furthermore, the simulation result has been validated in the laboratory on a hardware setup using the DSP-TMS320F28335 Launchpad. With the reduced number of switching devices as well as the dc supply, the size of the inverter is compacted and becomes more economical.

The exploration target at different depths through the ground-airborne frequency domain electromagnetic method (GAFDEM) is detected by transmitting waveforms at different frequencies. When taking these different depths into detail, arbitrarily distributed frequencies are needed. However, the current transmitting waveforms are mostly in a fixed frequency ratio or frequency difference, which fails to meet the requirements of exploration accuracy and efficiency at the same time. Therefore, as a solution to this problem, this paper proposes a transmitting waveform design method based on selective harmonic eliminated pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) technology. In the SHEPWM method, three transmitting waveforms with the desired spectrum are obtained by directly controlling the switching angles of a binary sequence with an artificial neural network algorithm. Firstly, our study puts forward the basic theories and principles of the full-periodic asymmetric SHEPWM waveform. Secondly, the study, through simulation, realizes the pseudorandom, depth-focused, and layer-identification waveform with different detection depths. Finally, the application of the proposed SHEPWM waveform to the geological survey in Kaili City, Guizhou Province, proves the correctness and feasibility of this proposed method.

A large number of harmonics will be generated in the process of transforming high frequency and high voltage alternating current (AC) into a constant frequency and constant voltage through a power conversion system when the high-speed motor is used as a generator. The phase-shifting reactor is used to eliminate harmonics for high-speed generator power conversion systems, and LCL filter and adjustable inductance filter are used to eliminate harmonics for high-speed motor power supply system in this paper. The adjustable inductance filter can adjust the inductance value in time according to the change of the output frequency of the inverter. The results verify the effectiveness of the methods used, and provide a theoretical basis for the wide application of high-speed motor by simulation.

The extensive employment of power semiconductor devices in multilevel inverters (MLIs) has the consequence of increased failure probabilities. With numerous applications demanding highly reliable inverters, several fault-tolerant schemes have been devised to address switch open-circuit faults. This paper analyzes a multilevel inverter topology for IGBT modules undergoing open-circuit faults, a major impediment to reliable operation within a power converter. Reconfiguration of modulation is performed post-fault. A modulation scheme is implemented across failure modes as a hybrid of nearest level control and selective harmonic elimination. Reliability assessment of the topology is performed, including a comparison with previous literature in terms of component requirements and reliability. Simulation results validate the proposed solutions.

This paper proposes a new meta-heuristic called Jumping Spider Optimization Algorithm (JSOA), inspired by Arachnida Salticidae hunting habits. The proposed algorithm mimics the behavior of spiders in nature and mathematically models its hunting strategies: search, persecution, and jumping skills to get the prey. These strategies provide a fine balance between exploitation and exploration over the solution search space and solve global optimization problems. JSOA is tested with 20 well-known testbench mathematical problems taken from the literature. Further studies include the tuning of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller, the Selective harmonic elimination problem, and a few real-world single objective bound-constrained numerical optimization problems taken from CEC 2020. Additionally, the JSOA’s performance is tested against several well-known bio-inspired algorithms taken from the literature. The statistical results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms recent literature algorithms and is capable to solve challenging real-world problems with unknown search space.

This paper presents the Archimedes optimization algorithm to eliminate selective harmonics in a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter (MLI). The foremost objective of the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) is to eliminate lower order harmonics by finding the optimal switching angle combination which minimizes the objective function containing Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and other specific harmonic terms. Consequently, the THD is also reduced. In this study, a recently proposed metaheuristic technique named the Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA) is used to determine the optimal angles corresponding to the 5, 7 and 9 level CHB-MLI. AOA involves equations related to a physical law, the Archimedes Principle. It is based on the idea of a buoyant force acting upward on a body or object that is partially or completely submerged in a fluid, and the upward force is related to the weight of the fluid displaced. This optimization technique has been implemented on CHB-MLI to generate various level outputs, simulated on MATLAB™ R2021a version environment software. The simulation results reveal that AOA is a high-performance optimization technique in terms of convergence speed and exploitation-exploration balance and is well-suited to the solution of the SHE problem. Furthermore, the laboratory validated the simulation result on a hardware setup using DSP-TMS320F28379D.

Multilevel inverters are increasingly being employed for industrial applications, such as speed control of motors and grid integration of distributed generation systems. The focus is on developing topologies that utilize fewer lower-rating switches and power sources while working efficiently and reliably. This work pertains to developing a three-phase multilevel inverter that employs switching capacitors and a single DC power supply that produces a nine-stage, three-phase voltage output. A recently proposed powerful meta-heuristic technique called symbiotic organism search (SOS) has been applied to identify the optimum switching angles for Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) from the output voltage waveform. A thorough converter analysis has also been done in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and is validated with the real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiment results.
