This research is inspired from monitoring the process covariance structure of q attributes where samples are independent, having been collected from a multivariate normal distribution with known mean vector and unknown covariance matrix. The focus is on two matrix random variables, constructed from different Wishart ratios, that describe the process for the two consecutive time periods before and immediately after the change in the covariance structure took place. The product moments of these constructed random variables are highlighted and set the scene for a proposed measure to enable the practitioner to calculate the run-length probability to detect a shift immediately after a change in the covariance matrix occurs. Our results open a new approach and provides insight for detecting the change in the parameter structure as soon as possible once the underlying process, described by a multivariate normal process, encounters a permanent/sustained upward or downward shift.

Vertical column density of sulphur dioxide has been measured at Maitri (70.7°S, 11.7°E), the Indian station in the Antarctica from September, 1999 to December, 2006 by a Brewer Spectrophotometer. Simultaneously, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and the maximum value of UV-B have also been measured, we found an increase in SO2 during spring. An increase in NO2 column was also found during this period but not identical with that of SO2. These variations in SO2 and NO2 are not in phase with the increase in UV-B flux at the ground due to the decrease of ozone column in the stratosphere. The variation of SO2 column is explained by the downward shift of penetration depth of UV-B radiation during the ozone-hole event.

This article analyzes concerns about market power and inequality in a model with multiple sectors, heterogeneous abilities, endogenous labor supply, and nonlinear income taxation. Proportional markups with no profit dissipation have no effect on the economy, and a policy that reduces a nonproportional markup raises (lowers) welfare when it is higher (lower) than a weighted average of other markups. With proportional (partial or full) profit dissipation, proportional markups are equivalent to a downward shift of the distribution of abilities, and the optimal policy rule with nonproportional markups maximizes consumer plus producer surplus despite concerns for distribution and labor supply distortion. The unorthodox estimation procedure, which Phillips (1958) adopted in his original paper, is examined using the Haar wavelet filter. The application of the Haar wavelet transform to Phillips’ original data shows that Phillips’ six pairs of mean coordinates display a striking similarity with the Haar scaling coefficients that represent averages with a period greater than 16 years. This is consistent with Desai’s (1975) intuition on the interpretation of the Phillips Curve. We show that the choice of sorting observations by ascending values of the unemployment rate is crucial for reaching the goal of estimating the eye-catching nonlinear hyperbolic shape of the wage–unemployment relationship that would be otherwise linear. Interestingly, the Haar filter can account not only for the facts characterizing the Phillips’ relationship up to the early 1960s but also for two important facts mostly debated among policymakers: the downward shift of the Phillips Curve and its flattening over time.

Abstract This research examined sensorimotor adaptation and aftereffect in trained vocalists and non-vocalists whose native language is Mandarin. The adaptive frequency-altered feedback paradigm involving a baseline of normal auditory feedback, a training phase of incrementally or decrementally changed feedback, and a test phase of normal auditory feedback was administered. The participants were asked to produce the sustained vowel /a/, Mandarin /ma1/ (“mother”), and Mandarin /ma2/ (“hemp”). The results show that the vocalists compensated less than the non-vocalists, suggesting that the vocalists’ audio-motor representations for pitch could be more entrenched than the non-vocalists’. All the participants displayed sensorimotor adaptation, indicating that online recalibration is an innate and automatic process. The presence of the aftereffect, however, depended on the stimulus type and vocal training experience. It appeared in all speakers’ responses to downward shift of /ma1/ and /ma2/, but only in the non-vocalists’ responses to /a/.

Concrete columns are critical in supporting the weight of an entire structural frame and also play a key role in force transferring among structural members. Therefore, integrity of the columns, especially their axial load bearing capacity, directly affects the stability and safety of the entire structure. In this study, a wearable smart hoop is designed to monitor the axial load of the concrete columns. The smart hoop measures the shift in impedance frequency of its integrated piezoelectric transducer and correlates the frequency to the structural state of the column. In order to validate the feasibility of the smart hoop, an experiment on two concrete columns with different dimensions is carried out. The smart hoop is installed on each column. Then, an increasing axial load was applied onto the specimen, and the admittance of the PZT patch is acquired under different load levels by using an impedance analyzer. Finally, frequencies corresponding to the peak and trough in the susceptance of the admittance signal are collected as the monitoring index to estimate the axial load variation on the specimen. The experimental results demonstrated a downward shift in frequency corresponding to an increase of axial load. The results validate the feasibility of the wearable smart hoop in monitoring axial load for concrete columns and show potential for retrofit on existing columns.
