This paper presents approaches to the computational analysis of solidification and cooling processes of continuously cast billets in order to improve and develop technological modes in the conditions of modern continuous casting machines using FEM.The application of modern numerical methods for solidification and cooling of workpieces on continuous casting machines is considered. The use of the finite element method is justified when using computational and experimental data for the development and improvement of casting technology.

The article presents the results of studies on the production of wire with a diameter of 0.5 mm from aluminum alloy 01417 with a content of rare-earth metals (REM) in the amount of 7-9% for aircraft construction needs. The deformation modes, the experimental technique and equipment for the implementation of the proposed technology described. The wire was obtained by drawing and bar rolling with subsequent drawing from a rod with a diameter of 5 mm, obtained previously using the process of combined rolling-extruding (CRE) from a continuous ingot with a diameter of 12 mm, cast in an electromagnetic mold (EMM). The wire obtained by the presented technology was subjected to 4 different heat treatment modes with annealing temperatures from 350 to 500 °C and holding time of 1 h in the furnace to achieve mechanical and electrophysical properties corresponding to TS 1-809-1038-2018. The level of strength and plastic properties obtained in the course of research required only one intermediate annealing. The microstructure of the wire was investigated and the modes were revealed that made it possible to obtain the required level of mechanical properties and electrical resistivity, satisfying TS 1-809-1038-2018.

Oxide films or inclusions can reduce the continuity and integrity of materials and they always lead to a significant reduction in the mechanical properties of an aluminum alloy. They can greatly reduce the plastic flow behavior of materials, thus affecting the subsequent processing performance. Therefore, an effective ultrasonic assisted preparation technology has been applied to industrial manufacturing of large-scale aluminum alloy ingots (with diameter: Φ = 1250 mm and height: h = 3750 mm). However, the mechanisms of ultrasonic purification on the large-scale ingots are not clear. Therefore, a number of aluminum alloy casting experiments were carried out to produce a conventional hot top semi-continuous ingot (CHTI) and an ultrasonic hot top semi-continuous ingot (UHTI) in this work. The microstructures of CHTI and UHTI were analyzed by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that there were some oxide film defects in the CHTI but some finely dispersed inclusion particles were discovered in the UHTI. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data showed that the component of inclusion was Al2O3. According to the different cavitation effects of the different areas of the molten aluminum, the process of ultrasonic purification was divided into three periods and the mechanisms in each period were separately studied.

Abstract In paper problem concerning modification of grey cast iron EN-GJL-200 Grade, which is realized mainly by intensification of liquid metal movement in horizontal continuous casting mould containing electromagnetic stirrer is presented. The range of studies contains influence of electromagnetic field on morphology of graphite and usable properties i.e. tensile strength, hardness and machinability. Moreover the influence of velocity of ingot pulling on microstructure was analyzed. The results of studies and their analysis show possibility of improvement in quality of grey cast iron continuous ingot firstly in result of elimination of hard spots in structure by properly selection of velocity of ingot pulling and second in result of unification of size, shape and distribution of flake graphite by application of electromagnetic field.

Abstract In paper is presented idea of construction and influence of selected parts of stand of horizontal continuous casting on quality of pure Al and AlSi2 alloy ingots. The main parts of the made stand belong to induction furnace, which is also tundish, water cooled continuous casting mould, system of recooling, system of continuous ingot drawing and cutting. Mainly was considered influence of electromagnetic stirrer, which was placed in continuous casting mould on refinement of ingots structure. Effect of structure refinement obtained by influence of electromagnetic stirring was compared with refinement obtained by use of traditional inoculation, which consists in introducing of additives i.e. Ti and B to metal bath. The results of studies show possibility of effective refinement of Al and AlSi2 alloy primary structure, only with use of horizontal electromagnetic field and without necessity of application of inoculants. This method of inoculation is important, because inoculants decrease the degree of purity and electrical conductivity of pure aluminum and moreover are reason of point cracks formation during rolling of ingots.
