Atmospheric photoionization is a widely applied soft ionization mechanism in gas sensing devices for the detection of volatile organic compounds in ambient air. Photoionization is typically induced by low-pressure Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) lamps with MgF2 or LiF lamp surface windows depending on the gas fill and the required wavelength transmission window. These lamps are known to exhibit gradually reduced VUV transmission due to hydrocarbon contamination. LiF surface windows are known to be especially problematic due to their hygroscopic nature, reducing VUV lamp lifetime to a mere 100 h, approximately. Here, we present a new design for the electrode of a photoionization detector based on thin-film technology. By replacing the commonplace metal grid electrode’s VUV lamp surface window with a chromium/gold thin film we obtain a doubling of photon efficiency for photoionization. Replacing the hygroscopic LiF lamp window surface with a metallic layer additionally offers the possibility to vastly increase operational lifetime of low-pressure Argon VUV lamps.

Upscaling of photoelectrode for a practical photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting system is still challenging because the PEC performance of large-scale photoelectrode is significantly low, compared to the lab scale photoelectrode. In an effort to overcome this challenge, sputtered gold (Au) and copper (Cu) grid lines were introduced to improve the PEC performance of large-scale cuprous oxide (Cu2O) photocathode in this work. It was demonstrated that Cu grid lines are more effective than Au grid lines to improve the PEC performance of large-scale Cu2O photocathode because its intrinsic conductivity and quality of grid lines are better than ones containing Au grid lines. As a result, the PEC performance of a 25-cm2 scaled Cu2O photocathode with Cu grid lines was almost double than one without grid lines, resulting in an improved charge transport in the large area substrate by Cu grid lines. Finally, a 50-cm2 scaled Cu2O photocathode with Cu grid lines was tested in an outdoor condition under natural sun. This is the first outdoor PEC demonstration of large-scale Cu2O photocathode with Cu grid lines, which gives insight into the development of efficient upscaled PEC photoelectrode.

In order to analyze the buckling behavior of lattice shells stiffened by cables or slender braces without pre-tension, it is necessary to consider the no-compression property of braces. This paper proposes an innovative method of linear buckling analysis that considers the no-compression property of braces. Moreover, in order to examine the proposed method's validity, its results are compared with the results from a nonlinear buckling analysis with geometrical nonlinearity and material nonlinearity to express the no-compression property of braces. The results show that the proposed method can well-predict the buckling behaviors of lattice shells stiffened by tension braces.
