Kan en felles læringsarena gi sykepleiestudenter økt klinisk kompetanse?

Studiens hensikt var å finne ut om samarbeidsdager mellom studenter, praksisveiledere og praksislærere kan gi læring som har betydning for studentenes utvikling av klinisk kompetanse. Stedet, rommet og sosiale samspill har betydning for læreprosesser, ifølge Etienne Wenger og Kari Martinsen. «Det tredje rommet» er brukt som en metafor om rommet der mennesker med kompetanse i teoretisk kunnskap og praksiskunnskap møtes sammen med studenter. Samarbeidsdager mellom studenter, praksisveiledere og praksislærere ble gjennomført for fire andreårs studentgrupper (N=23). Fokusgruppeintervju ble brukt for å samle inn data. De transkriberte intervjuene ble analysert gjennom meningsfortetning basert på Amedeo Giorgis fenomenologiske analysemetode. Essensen fra studentenes erfaringer fra samarbeidsdagene er at «Det tredje rommet» er en trygg arena der studentenes kliniske kompetanse ble stimulert og økt. Fire temaer beskriver studentenes erfaring: praksisforberedthet, trygghet, refleksjon og samarbeidslæring. Et styrket samarbeid mellom akademia og helseforetak gjennom arbeidsfellesskap i «Det tredje rommet» kan fremme sykepleiestudenters læring. Abstract Is a common learning arena a "Room of Possibility” that gives nursing students increased clinical competence? The aim of the study was to find out whether collaboration days between students, practice supervisors and nurse teachers can provide learning that facilitates students' development of clinical competence. The place, space and social interaction are important for learning processes, according to Etienne Wenger and Kari Martinsen. "The Third Room" is used as a metaphor about the room where people with competence in theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge collaborate with students. Collaboration days between students, practical nurse supervisors and nurse teachers were conducted for four second-year student groups (N=23). Focus groups were used to collect data. The transcribed interviews have been analyzed through meaning condensation. An essential structure of the students 'experiences from the collaboration days describes The Third Room as a good arena where the students' clinical competence was stimulated and increased. Four themes describe the student’s experiences; preparedness for practice, confidence, reflection and collaborative learning. A strengthened collaboration between universities and hospitals through working communities in The Third Room can facilitate nursing students' learning.

The Association of Nursing Home Staffing Levels With Consumer Complaints

Nursing homes (NH) are inspected annually, however, residents and others can file complaints any time. Complaints are critical to NH oversight. Another important quality factor is staffing. Our objective was to examine the association of complaints and staffing levels in a 2017 sample of 14,194 freestanding NHs. We used federal data on NH complaints, quality, staffing, and other characteristics. The outcomes were having received at least one complaint (or not) and numbers of complaints. Using logit and negative binomial regression, controlling for facility and resident characteristics, we found greater registered nurse, nursing assistant, and social services staffing were associated with fewer complaints. Interestingly, licensed practical nurse (LPN) staffing was associated with a higher likelihood of receiving a complaint. Results are consistent with literature on nurse staffing and quality. LPN results raise questions about substituting LPNs for RNs. The social services results show social services staffing may be important for quality.

Amwell, the leading telemedicine company in the United States received a $100 million investment from Google, plus $100 million towards a pilot program from the FCC. Attorneys will be affected because any life care plan attributes the largest expense to the hiring of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and their services are being impacted by telehealth technology in the last five years. Thanks to telehealth technology, nurses can work remotely, and this may lower the cost of support care mentioned in the life care plans that attorneys use.

Staying in Place or Moving Forward? Young Women’s Imagined Futures and Aspirations for Mobility in Care Work

This article analyses how the culturally widespread incitements to become aspirational and mobile are negotiated by young women in the vocational nursing education in Finland. Drawing on interviews with final year students, the article examines their imagined futures and asks how lived inequalities shape their aspirations and possibilities of navigating the neoliberalising care labour market that is marked by stark hierarchies and diminishing resources. The paper finds that the participants’ aspirations were characterised by the considerations of whether to remain as a practical nurse or to move forward to higher education. Yet, while some women were able to adopt a strong ethos of moving forward, others were more likely to be seen as fixed in place in auxiliary care work. The article pushes forward the debate on youth aspirations and mobility by unpacking the lived contradictions that shape the aspirations of young women entering the lower end of the care labour market.
