Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) refers to a group of rare genetic disorders that involve tooth development and are passed down through families. Hypoplasic AI phenotypes include the absence of enamel as a result of a defect in the secretory stage. This case report describes the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with hypoplastic AI. The clinical implications include sensitive teeth, functional problems, and aesthetic complaining. The diagnosis was done through history, clinical examination and imaging. The intervention was performed by Direct Resin Veneers. This treatment showed to improve occlusion, esthetics, and selfimage of the teenager. The satisfactory clinical result has made it possible to avoid more invasive and expensive treatments.

Unidirectional porous β-tricalcium phosphate (UDPTCP; Affinos®, Kuraray, Tokyo, Japan) has been in clinical use since 2015. Animal studies have confirmed the excellent potential of UDPTCP with regard to bone formation and material absorption. We present the first three clinical cases using UDPTCP as a bone substitute after curettage of benign bone tumors of the hand. All three patients were males, 29-, 30- and 81-years-old, two having a diagnosis of enchondroma and the other, a bone ganglion, with a pathological fracture identified in one case. Over a mean follow-up of 10 months, all patients achieved satisfactory clinical result, with no adverse events of UDPTCP noted. Radiographic evidence of good bone formation and material absorption was observable over the postoperative course. UDPTCP provided satisfactory clinical results, with good biocompatibility and fast resorption characteristics. Therefore, UDPTCP could provide a safe and reliable filling substitute for bone defects following curettage of small bone tumors.

Avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head is a rare disease. We herein report a case with varying degrees of lesions in the third and fourth metacarpal heads of the right hand and the third metacarpal head of the left hand. The patient was a 37-year-old male right-handed mechanical worker who presented with persistent dull pain in the right hand after labor work for more than a year. The 3 lesions in this patient were treated differently based on their clinical imaging manifestations. The neurologic function of the right hand recovered by the 18-month follow-up; only a slight limitation remained in the right middle finger. This is the first report of 1 patent who received 2 different treatment methods simultaneously and both provided a satisfactory clinical result.

SummaryThis paper reports the surgical treatment of a tibial fracture in a castrated adult male Belgian Landrace pig of 180 kg. The fracture was repaired using an intramedullary Steinmann pin, combined with cerclage wire and external transfixation. In contrast to other animal species, the fracture repair in the pig was hindered by the short and curved bones, the thick subcutaneous fat layer and the pronounced musculature. Postoperatively, the pig developed an osteomyelitis of the tibia due to pin tract contamination. Despite this complication, the fracture healed acceptably when all fixation material was removed two months after surgery. The infection resolved quickly and a satisfactory clinical result was obtained.

An unusual presentation of colitis cystica profunda was seen in a 39-year-old male with a complete colonic obstruction due to an intussception with a rectosigmoid inflammatory mass. The patient had apparent antecedent distal ulcerative colitis and management included subtotal colectomy. Removal of the rectosigmoid mass produced a satisfactory clinical result with no colonoscopic or histological evidence of recurrent disease in the subsequent decade. Although rare, this entity should be considered during the evaluation of any inflammatory process involving the distal colon, especially if an inflammatory polypoid colonic mass is present or a mucinous adenocarcinoma is suspected.
