Abstract Introduction Pterional craniotomy is a surgical approach frequently used in aneurysm and skull base surgery. Pterional craniotomy may lead to cosmetic and functional problems, such as eyebrow drop due to facial nerve frontal branch damage, temporal muscle atrophy, and temporomandibular joint pain. The aim was to compare the postoperative effects of our modified osteoplastic craniotomy with classical pterional craniotomy in terms of any change in volume of temporal muscle and in the degree of frontal muscle nerve damage. Materials and Methods Aneurysm cases were operated with either modified osteoplastic pterional craniotomy or free bone flap pterional craniotomy according to the surgeon's preference. Outcomes were compared in terms of temporal muscle volume and frontal muscle nerve function 6 months postoperatively. Results Preoperative temporal muscle volume in the modified osteoplastic pterional and free bone flap pterional craniotomy groups were not different (p > 0.05). However, significantly less atrophy was observed in the postoperative temporal muscle volume of the osteoplastic group compared with the classical craniotomy group (p < 0.001). In addition, when comparing frontal muscle nerve function there was less nerve damage in the modified osteoplastic pterional craniotomy group compared with the classical craniotomy group, although this did not reach significance (p > 0.05). Conclusion Modified osteoplastic pterional craniotomy significantly reduced atrophy of temporal muscle and caused proportionally less frontal muscle nerve damage compared with pterional craniotomy, although this latter outcome was not significant. These findings suggest that osteoplastic craniotomy may be a more advantageous intervention in cosmetic and functional terms compared with classical pterional craniotomy.

BACKGROUND: One of the properties of the soft denture lining (SDL) material that needed to overcome the functional problems is softness. Loss of softness due to the aging process and to extend the duration of use, sealer coating was developed to maintain its softness. Sealer coating acts as mechanical barrier to provide protection against aging of SDL materials. AIM: This study aims to determine the influence of thermocycling and sealer coating application on the shore hardness of the acrylic-based and silicone-based auto-polymerizing soft denture lining materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Materials that were used in this study are acrylic-based auto-polymerizing SDL (Durabase Soft, Reliance Dental Manufacturing LLC, Illinois, USA) and silicone-based auto-polymerizing SDL (Mollosil, Detax GmbH, Ettlingen, Germany). In this study, we used monopoly as sealer coating for acrylic-based auto-polymerizing SDL and varnish for silicone-based auto-polymerizing SDL. Thermocycling was performed for 2000 cycles for a 2-year simulation time. For shore hardness test, a total of 40 discs shaped samples were made with a diameter of 35 mm and a thickness of 6 mm. The samples were divided into eight groups (n = 5), namely, the uncoated and non-thermocycling acrylic-based auto-polymerizing SDL, the coated and non-thermocycling acrylic-based auto-polymerizing SDL, the uncoated and thermocycling acrylic-based auto-polymerizing SDL, the coated and thermocycling acrylic-based auto-polymerizing SDL, the uncoated and non-thermocycling silicone-based auto-polymerizing SDL, the coated and non-thermocycling silicone-based auto-polymerizing SDL, the uncoated and thermocycling silicone-based auto-polymerizing SDL, and the coated and thermocycling silicone-based auto-polymerizing SDL. The hardness test was carried out using the shore A durometer. RESULTS: The obtained data were tested using the independent t-test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that there was a significant effect between coated and uncoated acrylic-based SDL group that underwent thermocycling and in the silicone-based SDL group. The study showed that the hardness value was lower in both coated acrylic-based and silicone-based SDL groups compared to the non-coated group, so it can be concluded that the sealer coating is able to protect the hardness of SDL material against aging with a thermocycling simulation. The results also showed that there was a significant effect of thermocycling on the hardness of the material both in the coated acrylic-based SDL group, the uncoated acrylic-based SDL group, and the uncoated silicone-based SDL group. Study also showed that there was no significant effect of thermocycling in the coated silicone-based SDL group. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, it can be concluded that the use of sealer coating can maintain the hardness properties of both acrylic-based SDL and silicon-based self-polymerizing SDL so that it can increase the durability of SDL materials. However, the effect of sealer coating in protecting the hardness of SDL materials against aging was more evident in the silicone-based SDL group.

We consider the nonlinear n-th order boundary value problem Lu=u(n)=f(t,u(t),u′(t),…,u(n−1)(t))=Nu given arbitrary bounded linear functional conditions Bi(u)=0, i=1,…,n and develop a method that allows us to study all such resonance problems of order one, as well as implementing a more general constructive method for deriving existence criteria in the framework of the coincidence degree method of Mawhin. We demonstrate applicability of the formalism by giving an example for n=4.

Double lip or macrocheilitis is a rare facial anomaly, mostly congenital in origin. It commonly involves the upper lip than the lower lip. It may occur in isolation or as part of the Ascher’s syndrome. It results due to deposition of excessive areolar tissue and non-inflammatory hyperplasia of labial mucosa gland of pars villosa. It may be acquired as a result of injury to the lips or lip-biting habit. The double lip becomes conspicuous when the lips are retracted during smiling resulting in the characteristic ‘cupid’s bow’ appearance. This disfigurement can pose aesthetic and functional problems and may result in psychological distress. A surgical intervention is must for restoration of functions and to address the aesthetic concerns. The present article reports a case of non-syndromic double upper lip with triple labial frena and its surgical management with laser on one side and with scalpel on the other side.

Abstract Introduction Nasal fractures are a common ENT emergency that present to ED typically with a history of trauma. They can leave behind functional problems with breathing and can be cosmetically very deforming. For this reason, they need to be managed appropriately by the specialist team. In UHS, Southampton Hospital these patients were initially followed up by Care UK but during COVID, in order to minimise patient contact we came up with a modified patient initiated follow up pathway. (PIFU) Method Based on commonly agreed departmental guidelines: We looked at the statistics from 2019 and compared it with data from August – October 2020 and reviewed all patients who presented via ED and GP to us with nasal fractures visa image and telephone review and face to face meetings over a 3-month period. Results Despite lower attendances in ED during months of lockdown we still had 48 patients in 3 months i.e., nearly 4 patients every week. 50% did not initiate follow up. Of the patients who initiated follow up a third required MUA of which one was under general anaesthesia. All patients were treated within 21 days. Conclusions Our modified management pathway is compliant with the guidelines despite some consultations via telephone calls and image reviews.

Introduction: Depression among orphans is a matter of concern due to its impairing effect on functioning and emotions. This study determined the prevalence of depression symptoms and the extent of emotional and functional problems among orphaned adolescents in secondary schools. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational design using a Children’s Depression Inventory 2 (CDI 2) test was conducted. The CDI 2 was used to measure the prevalence of depression symptoms among 301 orphaned adolescents. The CDI 2 T-scores of more than 65 indicated the presence of depression symptoms. Among 301 participants aged between 13 and 17 years old, 176 (58.4%) were females, 61% (n = 184) were double orphans, and 39% (n = 117) were maternal orphans. Results: The prevalence of depression symptoms was 21%, with 63 (20.9%) having elevated emotional problems, 77 (25.5%), elevated functional problems, 9.9% (n=30) very low self-esteem and 90% (n = 271) no self-esteem problems. Elevated negative mood was 20.6% (n = 26), 14.6% (n = 44) had an elevated level of ineffectiveness and 32.5% (n = 98) had elevated interpersonal problems. Conclusion: The results of this study preclude any conclusions about the comparison of common characteristics between orphaned and non-orphaned adolescents. The standardised tool used narrowed the number of participants of interest due to the cut-off age.

Background: Frozen shoulder is a joint disorder that causes limited motion of the shoulder joint in all directions of movement, causing both physical and functional problems. This activity aims to see the benefits of manual therapy and pendular codman exercises in increasing the activity of frozen patients at Grandmed Lubuk Pakam Hospital in 2019. Manual therapy methods and codman pendular exercises were given to 24 patients at the Physiotherapy Clinic of Grandmed Lubuk Pakam Hospital. The measuring instrument used to measure the functional activity ability of the shoulder is the index of shoulder pain and disability with the 0% -60% category being improving and 61% -100% being worse. Based on the results obtained during manual therapy and codman pendular exercise, it shows that the ability of the patient's shoulder functional activity has increased. where manual therapy and pendular codman exercise from 16 samples, the ability of shoulder functional activity with a SPADI value of 100% decreased and after manual therapy and pendular codman exercises for 3 times decreased to 12.5% decreased and 87.5% improved. Based on these data it can be neglected that there is an effect of offering manual therapy exercises and pendular codman in increasing the patient's shoulder functional activity by 87.5%

The traditional cultural reminiscences existing in contemporary couples often create difficulties in adapting to a common value system by the partners. The tendency to tolerate the other also seems obvious and for these reasons, marital solidarity has many functional problems. In the common culture, the conflict is equivalent to scandal, so often the tendency to avoid the conflict is a priority to mediate the conflictual situation. At the same time, in the process of self-mediation, a priority effort tends to be to look for the guilty one and, at the same time, to dominate the mediation process. And because a certain set of tips already seems socially validated ("Communicate better!"), many couples end up mediating the effects of the conflict, not the state of the conflict itself. The study aims to analyze the opinions on the strategy of self-management of the conflict within the couple, based on a qualitative research, the research tool being the semi-structured interview.
