In Africa, international migration to the Global North is often interpreted as a means to achieve upward social mobility. This article highlights the importance of considering the socio-economic and political transformations that form migration aspirations, especially among African youths. Simultaneously, increasing restrictive migration regimes impacts the extent to which migrants can meet the clauses in the moral economy of migration in their origin communities. We focus on (Anglophone) Cameroon, where international migration is referred to as “bushfalling”. A person who migrates to a Western society desires or is expected to return home to share the wealth he/she has accumulated. This interpretation of migration forms different perspectives regarding migrants and guides expectations towards returned migrants. However, little is known on how these expectations are defined and redefined in the society of return. Based on focus group discussions conducted among local community members, we show that the expectations were guided by the visa regimes of destination countries. Moreover, successful returnees were defined by their ability to be visible and create an impact after return. Thus, this article contributes more broadly to an African perspective on the meaning and impact of return migration.

The OA movement isgenerally considered to have been founded for the truly philanthropic purposeof promoting equity and inclusivity in access to scholarship. For Africans,this meant the opening of the research ecosystem to marginalised researchcommunities who could then freely make use of shared research to aid in thesocio-economic development and emancipation of the continent. However, this philanthropicpurpose has been deviated from, leading instead to the disenfranchisement ofthe African research community. Through systemic inequalities embedded in thescholarly ecosystem, the publishing landscape has been northernised, withresearch from the global north sitting at the very top of the knowledgehierarchy to the exclusion of Africa and other parts of the global south. Forthis reason, progressive open access practices and policies need to be adopted,with an emphasis on social justice as an impetus, to enhance the sharing andrecognition of African scholarship, while also bridging the ‘research-exchange’divide that exists between the global south and north. Furthermore, advocatesof open access must collaborate to create equal opportunities for Africanvoices to participate in the scholarly landscape through the creation anddissemination of global south research. Thusly, the continental platform wasdeveloped by University of Cape Town. This platform was developed around theconcept of a tenant model to act as a contributor to social justice driven openaccess advocacy, and as a disruptor of the unjust knowledge hierarchies thatexist.

Abstract In this article two series are analyzed: Black Earth Rising (a BBC/Netflix production) and Queen Sono (the first African Netflix original series), shows that are about African realities from an African perspective (Rwanda in Black Earth Rising and South Africa in Queen Sono). The findings in this article show that both series address social and political issues such as neocolonialism, neoextractivism, internal colonialism, racism, inequality, justice, self-determination, corruption, violence, peace, memory, necropolitics, mental health, and decoloniality. I also argue that the shows could be used as pedagogical tools to raise critical consciousness in a wide public regarding the social and political issues addressed. The research in this article has been conducted with a qualitative methodology, using both shows as case studies and using content analysis and bibliographical research. The analysis of the series is based in the discussion of critical theory and decoloniality approaches and authors, especially from Latin America and Africa. Furthermore, the analysis of popular media (such as series) is a relevant effort to decolonize knowledge, using alternative and non-academic sources to produce and socialize knowledge.

This article investigates interpretations of the Book of Ruth from the point of view of some African scholars. Firstly, an attempt is made to understand what is meant by African biblical hermeneutics (ABH). An overview of the emergence of ABH is given, and the question why reading the Bible from an African perspective was necessary, is addressed. It appears that African biblical scholars and an African Christian community could not relate to Western European interpretations of the Bible that reflect western experiences and concerns that were vastly different from their own postcolonial experiences and concerns since the latter part of the 20th century.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The engagement between Western and ABH is discussed, and ABH as a necessary and viable means of biblical interpretation is recognised, but a point of critique is also raised at the end of this section. Thereafter an overview of ABH as appropriated to the Book of Ruth is given, and finally, some evaluative conclusions are drawn.
