Abstract A single-reservoir particle balance for the main plasma species hydrogen has been established for Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X). This has enabled the quantitative characterization of the particle sources in the standard island divertor configuration for the first time. Findings from attached scenarios with two different island sizes with a boronized wall and turbo molecular pumping are presented. Fueling efficiencies, particle flows and source locations were measured and used to infer the total particle confinement time $\tau_{\rm{p}}$. Perturbative gas injection experiments served to measure the effective particle confinement time $\tau_{\rm{p}}^*$. Combining both confinement times provides access to the global recycling coefficient $\bar{R}$. Hydrogen particle inventories have been addressed and the knowledge of particle sources and sinks reveals the core fueling distribution and provides insight into the capability of the magnetic islands to control exhaust features. Measurements of hydrogen fueling efficiencies were sensitive to the precise fueling location and measured between 12~\% and 31~\% with the recycling fueling at the strike line modeled at only 6~\%, due to much higher densities. 15~\% of the total \SI{5.2E+22}{a/s} recycling flow ionizes far away from the recycling surfaces in the main chamber. It was shown that 60~\% of recycled particles ionize above the horizontal and 18~\% above the vertical divertor target, while the remainder of the recycling flow ionizes above the baffle (7~\%). Combining these source terms with their individual fueling efficiencies resolves the core fueling distribution. Due to the higher fueling efficiency in the main chamber, up to 51~\% of the total \SI{5.1E+21}{1/s} core fueling particles are entering the confined plasma from the main chamber. $\tau_{\rm{p}}$ values in the range of 260 ms were extracted for these discharges. Together with $\tau_{\rm{p}}$, the global recycling coefficient $\bar{R}$ was resolved for every $\tau_{\rm{p}}^*$ measurement and a typical value close to unity was obtained. An increase of the island size, resulted in no change of $\tau_{\rm{p}}$, but doubled $\tau_{\rm{p}}^*$, indicating the feasibility of the control coils as an actuator to control exhaust features without affecting core confinement properties.

Abstract. Plastic debris is the most common and exponentially increasing human pollutant in the world's ocean. The distribution and impact of plastic in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans have been the subject of many publications but not so the Indian Ocean (IO). Some of the IO rim countries have the highest population densities globally and mismanagement of plastic waste is of concern in many of these rim states. Some of the most plastic-polluted rivers empty into the IO, with all this suggesting that the IO receives a tremendous amount of plastic debris each year. However, the concentration, distribution, and impacts of plastics in the IO are poorly understood as the region is under-sampled compared to other oceans. In this review, we discuss sources and sinks, which are specific to the IO. We also discuss unique atmospheric, oceanographic, and topographic features of the IO that control plastic distribution, such as reversing wind directions due to the monsoon, fronts, and upwelling regions. We identify hotspots of possible plastic accumulation in the IO, which differ between the two hemispheres. In the southern IO, plastics accumulate in a garbage patch in the subtropical gyre. However, this garbage patch is not well defined, and plastics may leak into the southern Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean. There is no subtropical gyre and associated garbage in the northern IO due to the presence of landmasses. Instead, the majority of buoyant plastics most likely end up on coastlines. Finally, we identify the vast knowledge gaps concerning plastics in the IO and point to the most pressing topics for future investigation.

Waste heat recovery is considered as one of the most promising options to improve the efficiency and sustainability of industrial processes. Even though industrial waste heat is abundantly available and its utilization is not a new concept, the implementation rate of waste-heat recovery interventions in industrial facilities is still low, due to several real or perceived barriers. Foremost challenges are represented by technical, economic, financial and regulatory factors. An additional prominent barrier lies in the lack or incompleteness of information concerning the material and energy flows within the factories, and the types and characteristics of waste heat sources and possible sinks for their internal or external reuse. With the aim to overcome some of the information barriers and increase the willingness of companies to approach waste heat recovery and reuse, a methodology to map waste heat sources and sinks in industrial processes is proposed in this study. The approach here presented combines information from the most relevant publications on the subject and data gathered from the analysis of energy audits carried out by large and energy-intensive enterprises. In order to demonstrate its feasibility, the methodology was applied to the Italian dairy sector, because of its large energy consumption and its enormous potential for the utilization of low-temperature waste heat sources.

Random Boolean networks, originally introduced as simplified models for the genetic regulatory networks, are abstract models widely applied for the study of the dynamical behaviors of self-organizing complex systems. In these networks, connectivity and the bias of the Boolean functions are the most important factors that can determine the behavioral regime of the systems. On the other hand, it has been found that topology and some structural elements of the networks such as the reciprocity, self-loops and source nodes, can have relevant effects on the dynamical properties of critical Boolean networks. In this paper, we study the impact of source and sink nodes on the dynamics of homogeneous and heterogeneous Boolean networks. Our research shows that an increase of the source nodes causes an exponentially growing of the different behaviors that the system can exhibit regardless of the network topology, while the amount of order seems to undergo modifications depending on the topology of the system. Indeed, with the increase of the source nodes the orderliness of the heterogeneous networks also increases, whereas it diminishes in the homogeneous ones. On the other hand, although the sink nodes seem not to have effects on the dynamic of the homogeneous networks, for the heterogeneous ones we have found that an increase of the sinks gives rise to an increasing of the order, although the different potential behaviors of the system remains approximately the same.

Abstract. Various atmospheric sources and sinks regulate the abundance of tropospheric formaldehyde (HCHO), which is an important trace gas impacting the HOx (≡ HO2 + OH) budget and the concentration of ozone (O3). In this study, we present the formation and destruction terms of ambient HCHO and O3 calculated from in situ observations of various atmospheric trace gases measured at three different sites across Europe during summertime. These include a coastal site in Cyprus, in the scope of the Cyprus Photochemistry Experiment (CYPHEX) in 2014, a mountain site in southern Germany, as part of the Hohenpeißenberg Photochemistry Experiment (HOPE) in 2012, and a forested site in Finland, where measurements were performed during the Hyytiälä United Measurements of Photochemistry and Particles (HUMPPA) campaign in 2010. We show that, at all three sites, formaldehyde production from the OH oxidation of methane (CH4), acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), isoprene (C5H8) and methanol (CH3OH) can almost completely balance the observed loss via photolysis, OH oxidation and dry deposition. Ozone chemistry is clearly controlled by nitrogen oxides (NOx ≡ NO + NO2) that include O3 production from NO2 photolysis and O3 loss via the reaction with NO. Finally, we use the HCHO budget calculations to determine whether net ozone production is limited by the availability of VOCs (volatile organic compounds; VOC-limited regime) or NOx (NOx-limited regime). At the mountain site in Germany, O3 production is VOC limited, whereas it is NOx limited at the coastal site in Cyprus. The forested site in Finland is in the transition regime.

Abstract. Atmospheric methane (CH4) concentrations have been rising since 2007, resulting from an imbalance between CH4 sources and sinks. The CH4 budget is generally estimated through top-down approaches using CH4 observations as constraints. The atmospheric isotopic CH4 signal, δ13C(CH4), can also provide additional constraints and helps to discriminate between emission categories. The oxidation by chlorine (Cl) likely contributes less than 5 % to the total oxidation of atmospheric CH4. However, the Cl sink is highly fractionating, and thus strongly influences δ13C(CH4). As inversion studies do not prescribe the same Cl fields to constrain CH4 budget, it can lead to discrepancies between estimates. To quantify the influence of the Cl concentrations on CH4, δ13C(CH4) and CH4 budget estimates, we perform multiple sensitivity simulations using three Cl fields with concentrations that are realistic with regard to recent literature and one Cl field with concentrations that are very likely to be overestimated. We also test removing the tropospheric and the entire Cl sink in other sensitivity simulations. We find that the realistic Cl fields tested here are responsible for between 0.3 % and 1.8 % of the total chemical CH4 sink in the troposphere and between 1.0 % and 1.2 % in the stratosphere. Prescribing these different Cl amounts in surface-based inversions can lead to differences in global CH4 source adjustments of up to 12.3 TgCH4.yr−1. We also find that the globally-averaged isotopic signature of the CH4 sources inferred by a surface-based inversion assimilating δ13C(CH4) observations would decrease by 0.53 ‰ for each additional percent of contribution from the tropospheric Cl sink to the total sink. Finally, our study shows that CH4 seasonal cycle amplitude is modified by less than 1–2 % but δ13(CH4) seasonal cycle amplitude can be modified by up to 10–20 %, depending on the latitude.

AbstractIdentifying sources and sinks of malaria transmission is critical for designing effective intervention strategies particularly as countries approach elimination. The number of malaria cases in Thailand decreased 90% between 2012 and 2020, yet elimination has remained a major public health challenge with persistent transmission foci and ongoing importation. There are three main hotspots of malaria transmission in Thailand: Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket in the Northeast; Tak in the West; and Yala in the South. However, the degree to which these hotspots are connected via travel and importation has not been well characterized. Here, we develop a metapopulation model parameterized by mobile phone call detail record data to estimate parasite flow among these regions. We show that parasite connectivity among these regions was limited, and that each of these provinces independently drove the malaria transmission in nearby provinces. Overall, our results suggest that due to the low probability of domestic importation between the transmission hotspots, control and elimination strategies can be considered separately for each region.
