Usable texts should be extremely clear and functional. The present article focuses on instructions as a genre. Using French braid instructions as an example, the author presents how the form and layout of a text influence its usability. To this end an experiment was conducted on a sample of 32 individuals. The subjects received four versions of the same instructions — in the form of continuous text, in the form of continuous text with fragments in bold type, bullet point instructions and bullet point instructions with illustrations. The objective was to compare various forms of instructions (a form of text often used in everyday life, the clarity of which should consequently be as high as possible) in order to test their usability.

The fourth chapter of Fighting Visibility analyzes interviews with female UFC fighters to consider how they navigate social media in their jobs. Building followers online, engaging with fans, and promoting sponsors as micro-influencers is an undercompensated and often invisible form of labor that leverages a gendered tax on female athletes, particularly those who do not perform the traditional forms of femininity that are more valued in popular culture. Female fighters freely undertake this aspirational labor because they hope the exposure online will convince the UFC to promote them or that their efforts to engage fans will appeal to sponsors. Instead, visibility on social media remains an unwritten and unpaid bullet point on the UFC fighter job description that often fails to deliver the assumed benefits that athletes seek.

The effects of exercise-heat acclimation (HA), in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), on heart rate variability (HRV) remains unclear. We assessed electrocardiogram recordings during exercise-heat stress, in middle-aged-to-older individuals (50-70 years) with (n=6) and without (n=8; CON) T2D, before and after 7-days exercise HA. Exercising heart rate was reduced (CON, -9 ±5 bpm; T2D, -14 ±9 bpm) yet HRV was unresponsive. Given the negative correlations between diminished HRV and cardiac risk, further research is warranted. Novelty bullet point: Our observations indicate that exercise-heat acclimation may not effectively attenuate the deviation toward reduced overall HRV and unfavourable cardiac autonomic modulation in individuals with T2D.

The text of Section 4 of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment is dense and requires careful unpacking. Section 4 allows a president to be displaced from power if the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet declare that he is unable to discharge his powers and duties. The text then provides for the President to return to power. If the Vice President and Cabinet oppose his attempt, Congress is empowered to resolve any disputes. All of this is subject to specific procedural requirements and time limits. This chapter presents all of these details in both bullet-point form and with a comprehensive flowchart.
