Abstract This paper describes an approximation algorithm for solving standard quadratic optimization problems(StQPs) over the standard simplex by using fuzzification technique. We show that the approximate solution of the algorithm is an epsilon -critical point and satisfies epsilon-delta condition. The algorithm is compared with IBM ILOG CPLEX (short for CPLEX). The computational results indicate that the new algorithm is faster than CPLEX. Especially for infeasible problems. Furthermore, we calculate 100 instances for different size StQP problems. The numerical experiments show that the average computational time of the new algorithm for calculating the first local minimizer is in BigO(n) when the size of the problems is less or equal to 450.

In this paper, we consider a class of mathematical programs with switching constraints (MPSCs) where the objective involves a non-Lipschitz term. Due to the non-Lipschitz continuity of the objective function, the existing constraint qualifications for local Lipschitz MPSCs are invalid to ensure that necessary conditions hold at the local minimizer. Therefore, we propose some MPSC-tailored qualifications which are related to the constraints and the non-Lipschitz term to ensure that local minimizers satisfy the necessary optimality conditions. Moreover, we study the weak, Mordukhovich, Bouligand, strongly (W-, M-, B-, S-) stationay, analyze what qualifications making local minimizers satisfy the (M-, B-, S-) stationay, and discuss the relationship between the given MPSC-tailored qualifications. Finally, an approximation method for solving the non-Lipschitz MPSCs is given, and we show that the accumulation point of the sequence generated by the approximation method satisfies S-stationary under the second-order necessary condition and MPSC Mangasarian-Fromovitz (MF) qualification.

Deburring is recognized as an ideal technology for robotic automation. However, since the low stiffness of the robot can affect the deburring quality and the performance of an industrial robot is generally inhomogeneous over its workspace, a cell setup must be found that allows the robot to track the toolpath with the desired performance. In this work, the problems of robotic deburring are addressed by integrating components commonly used in the machining industry. A rotary table is integrated with the robotic deburring cell to increase the effective reach of the robot and enable it to machine a large workpiece. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimize the placement of the workpiece based on the stiffness of the robot, and a local minimizer is used to maximize the stiffness of the robot along the deburring toolpath. During cutting motions, small table rotations are allowed so that the robot maintains high stiffness, and during non-cutting motions, large table rotations are allowed to reposition the workpiece. The stiffness of the robot is modeled by an artificial neural network (ANN). The results confirm the need to optimize the cell setup, since many optimizers cannot track the toolpath, while for the successful optimizers, a performance imbalance occurs along the toolpath.

AbstractRecently, a new approach to tackle cardinality-constrained optimization problems based on a continuous reformulation of the problem was proposed. Following this approach, we derive a problem-tailored sequential optimality condition, which is satisfied at every local minimizer without requiring any constraint qualification. We relate this condition to an existing M-type stationary concept by introducing a weak sequential constraint qualification based on a cone-continuity property. Finally, we present two algorithmic applications: We improve existing results for a known regularization method by proving that it generates limit points satisfying the aforementioned optimality conditions even if the subproblems are only solved inexactly. And we show that, under a suitable Kurdyka–Łojasiewicz-type assumption, any limit point of a standard (safeguarded) multiplier penalty method applied directly to the reformulated problem also satisfies the optimality condition. These results are stronger than corresponding ones known for the related class of mathematical programs with complementarity constraints.

We consider choice of the regularization parameter in Tikhonov method if the noise level of the data is unknown. One of the best rules for the heuristic parameter choice is the quasi-optimality criterion where the parameter is chosen as the global minimizer of the quasi-optimality function. In some problems this rule fails. We prove that one of the local minimizers of the quasi-optimality function is always a good regularization parameter. For the choice of the proper local minimizer we propose to construct the Q-curve which is the analogue of the L-curve, but on the x-axis we use modified discrepancy instead of discrepancy and on the y-axis the quasi-optimality function instead of the norm of the approximate solution. In the area rule we choose for the regularization parameter such local minimizer of the quasi-optimality function for which the area of the polygon, connecting on Q-curve this minimum point with certain maximum points, is maximal. We also provide a posteriori error estimates of the approximate solution, which allows to check the reliability of the parameter chosen heuristically. Numerical experiments on an extensive set of test problems confirm that the proposed rules give much better results than previous heuristic rules. Results of proposed rules are comparable with results of the discrepancy principle and the monotone error rule, if the last two rules use the exact noise level.

For piecewise linear functions f : R n ↦ R we show how their abs-linear representation can be extended to yield simultaneously their decomposition into a convex f ˇ and a concave part f ^ , including a pair of generalized gradients g ˇ ∈ R n ∋ g ^ . The latter satisfy strict chain rules and can be computed in the reverse mode of algorithmic differentiation, at a small multiple of the cost of evaluating f itself. It is shown how f ˇ and f ^ can be expressed as a single maximum and a single minimum of affine functions, respectively. The two subgradients g ˇ and − g ^ are then used to drive DCA algorithms, where the (convex) inner problem can be solved in finitely many steps, e.g., by a Simplex variant or the true steepest descent method. Using a reflection technique to update the gradients of the concave part, one can ensure finite convergence to a local minimizer of f, provided the Linear Independence Kink Qualification holds. For piecewise smooth objectives the approach can be used as an inner method for successive piecewise linearization.

In this paper, an algorithm is introduced to solve the global optimization problem for melanoma skin cancer segmentation. The algorithm is based on the smoothing of an auxiliary function that is constructed using a known local minimizer and smoothed by utilising Bezier curves. This function achieves all filled function properties. The proposed optimization method is applied to find the threshold values in melanoma skin cancer images. The proposed algorithm is implemented on PH2, ISBI2016 challenge, and ISBI 2017 challenge datasets for melanoma segmentation. The results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity compared with other methods.

AbstractUnderstanding treatment heterogeneity is essential to the development of precision medicine, which seeks to tailor medical treatments to subgroups of patients with similar characteristics. One of the challenges of achieving this goal is that we usually do not have a priori knowledge of the grouping information of patients with respect to treatment effect. To address this problem, we consider a heterogeneous regression model which allows the coefficients for treatment variables to be subject-dependent with unknown grouping information. We develop a concave fusion penalized method for estimating the grouping structure and the subgroup-specific treatment effects, and derive an alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm for its implementation. We also study the theoretical properties of the proposed method and show that under suitable conditions there exists a local minimizer that equals the oracle least squares estimator based on a priori knowledge of the true grouping information with high probability. This provides theoretical support for making statistical inference about the subgroup-specific treatment effects using the proposed method. The proposed method is illustrated in simulation studies and illustrated with real data from an AIDS Clinical Trials Group Study.
