Port cities are particularly important because they are affected by mutations and fluctuations of industrial evolution. These ports encounter other sequential and recreational functions that miss opportunities for identity and particular waterfront characteristics. A city’s waterfront could be envisioned as a thick line, an equipped and inhabitable limen, creating a sense of belonging that could lead to significant identity by corresponding to both internal qualities of a city and external regional influences. These marginal bands can reveal the dynamic in-between-ness of being in the middle. It is an appropriate time to assess redevelopment projects on waterfront sites and shorelines to evaluate ways to recreate the image of the city, appeal to an urban population and recapture economic investment. Waterfront projects embody potential that speaks to our future and our past. In fact, a waterfront is a hybrid-scape that deals with the gap between city and water to provide alternatives for future usage.

This article discusses the role of historical closure in conflict resolution and reconciliation, departing from the example of the Polish Round Table negotiations in 1989. The concept of a “thick line” (“Gruba kreska” or “Schlussstrich”) was used in several historical contexts, showing the intention to detach from history when resolving pressing current societal issues. Historical evidence suggests that it was an intentionally chosen strategy by both sides taking part in the Round Table negotiations in 1989. Historical closure is known to have good consequences for building mutual trust, improving attitudes and making contact interventions more effective in improving intergroup relations. This is mostly attributed to the fact that historical crimes can have a long-standing impact on intergroup relations: past victimhood and perpetratorship lead to current grievances, denial, and mistrust. Only when these historical roles are overcome can both parties achieve any agreement. At the same time, historical closure breeds a sense of injustice among political followers and gives birth to numerous conspiracy theories. This article analyzes these problems in the Polish context and beyond.

Objectives: To assess presence and severity of image-stitching artefacts and distortion in lateral cephalograms acquired by CCD-based sensors and their association with movement. Methods: A human skull was mounted on a robot simulating five head movement types (anteroposterior translation/lifting/nodding/lateral rotation/tremor), at three distances (0.75/1.5/3 mm), based on two patterns (skull returning/not returning to the initial position, except for tremor). Three cephalometric units, two ProMax-2D (Planmeca Oy, Finland), one with Dimax-3 (D-3) and one with Dimax-4 (D-4) sensor, and one Orthophos-SL (ORT, Dentsply-Sirona, Germany), acquired cephalograms during the predetermined movements, in duplicate (54 with movement and 28 controls with no movement per unit). One observer assessed the presence of an image-stitching line (none/thin/thin with vertical stripes or thick), misalignment between the anatomical structure display (none/<1/1–3/>3 mm), and distortion in each image quadrant (present/absent), in duplicate. Severe image-stitching artefacts were defined for images scored with a thin line with vertical stripes or thick line and/or misalignment between anatomical structure display ≥1 mm. Severe distortion was defined for images scored with distortion in both anterior quadrants of the skull. κ-statistics provided intraobserver agreement. Results: Intraobserver reproducibility was >0.8 (all assessed parameters). Severe image-stitching artefacts were scored in 70.4 and 18.5% of D-3 and D-4 movement images, respectively. Severe distortion was scored in 64.8% of D-3, 5.6% of D-4 and 37% of ORT movement images. Neither severe image-stitching artefacts nor severe distortion were observed in control images. Conclusion: Sensor type, movement type, distance and pattern affected presence and severity of image-stitching artefacts and distortion in CCD-based cephalograms.

April 16, 2020 marked the 6th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster. The tragic event roused South Korean civilians and gave rise to numerous rumors and propaganda myths, which formed the basis for the so-called “candle revolution”. They included both a conspiracy theory about the disaster, and the thesis that the main cause of the death of children was the criminal inaction of the corrupted Park Geun-hye administration and the ex-President herself. The examination of the remains of the ferry raised in 2017 after the impeachment of Park drew a thick line under the conspiracy theories (explosion on board, collision with a US submarine, etc.). Nevertheless, the question “what went wrong?” remains unanswered despite politically committed investigations. Meanwhile, most of the rumors circulating after the tragedy that brought people to the streets were never proven. Moreover, Park Geun-hye was acquitted by the Court of the charges related to the Sewol. The facts show that the blame for a great number of victims is not on the Blue house, but on the local authorities, who were unable to effectively conduct rescue operations, and later openly practiced window-dressing and misinformed their superiors. The President therefore did not receive timely information that would require a rapid response on her part. As the case involved the province of Jeolla (a regional stronghold of the Democrats), the opposition expressing storm of abuse had the advantage of shifting the blame from them to the Central government and it succeeded in doing this. The information campaign of Park Geun-hye's opponents contributed to her wilt and the formation in the mass consciousness of the former President’s image that played its role in the later developments.

Aims. The infall of material onto a protostar, in the case of optically thick line emission, produces an asymmetry in the blue- and red-wing line emissions. For an angularly resolved emission, this translates in a blue central spot in the first-order moment (intensity weighted velocity) map. Methods. An analytical expression for the first-order moment intensity as a function of the projected distance was derived, for the cases of infinite and finite infall radius. The effect of a finite angular resolution, which requires the numerical convolution with the beam, was also studied. Results. This method was applied to existing data of several star-forming regions, namely G31.41+0.31 HMC, B335, and LDN 1287, obtaining good fits to the first-order moment intensity maps, and deriving values of the central masses onto which the infall is taking place (G31.41+0.31 HMC: 70–120 M⊙; B335: 0.1 M⊙; Guitar Core of LDN 1287: 4.8 M⊙). The central-blue-spot infall hallmark appears to be a robust and reliable indicator of infall.

Epicyclic gear trains (EGTs) are used in the mechanical energy transmission systems where high velocity ratios are needed in a compact space. It is necessary to eliminate duplicate structures in the initial stages of enumeration. In this paper, a novel and simple method is proposed using a parameter, Vertex Incidence Polynomial (VIP), to synthesize epicyclic gear trains up to six links eliminating all isomorphic gear trains. Each epicyclic gear train is represented as a graph by denoting gear pair with thick line and transfer pair with thin line. All the permissible graphs of epicyclic gear trains from the fundamental principles are generated by the recursive method. Isomorphic graphs are identified by calculating VIP. Another parameter “Rotation Index” (RI) is proposed to detect rotational isomorphism. It is found that there are six nonisomorphic rotation graphs for five-link one degree-of-freedom (1-DOF) and 26 graphs for six-link 1-DOF EGTs from which all the nonisomorphic displacement graphs can be derived by adding the transfer vertices for each combination. The proposed method proved to be successful in clustering all the isomorphic structures into a group, which in turn checked for rotational isomorphism. This method is very easy to understand and allows performing isomorphism test in epicyclic gear trains.
