This study seeks to explore the strategic alternatives for the many small and medium-sized manufacturing firms in China that play an OEM role in the global value chain. Declining margins due to rising production costs and intense competition from emerging manufacturing industries in Southeast Asia necessitates the transformation of China's traditional manufacturing industry. The result is opportunities for the creation and manufacturing of domestic brands. A multiple-case study methodology is used with primary data collection through in-depth interviews, supported by secondary data on the subject firms. The findings reveal an awareness of the opportunities afforded by the trend towards the development of domestic brands as well as the vision, strategy, tactics, and forecasting related to a transition to brand creation. This chapter could be of interest to those with an interest in manufacturing transition, brand development, and providing direction to OEM SMEs in China that seek to develop a strategic roadmap during the imminent industrial evolution and transformation.

Synergistic development of the culture, sports, and tourism industries is an emerging trend in China, providing new formats for industrial evolution and fresh momentum for industrial upgrading. Therefore, building a robust framework to evaluate the synergistic development is relevant to China’s economic and social development. This study used a coupling coordination model to calculate the coupling coordination degree of the three industries, for 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2017. Subsequently, it employed spatial autocorrelation techniques and GeoDetector to identify factors affecting the synergistic development from global and local perspectives before discussing the driving mechanisms. The results showed that (1) the synergistic development of the three industries was generally stable with a slight imbalance. (2) The development level varied across regions. The general spatial pattern was low in northeastern and western China, stable and average in the central region, and high in the eastern region. (3) The synergistic development has a prominent “proximity dependence” effect reflected by a notable spatial agglomeration feature and positive spatial autocorrelation trend and (4) twenty-one indicators of six driving factors (industrial pulling force, population supporting force, consumer purchasing power, transportation pushing force, resource attraction force, and economic driving force) affected the synergistic development.

Port cities are particularly important because they are affected by mutations and fluctuations of industrial evolution. These ports encounter other sequential and recreational functions that miss opportunities for identity and particular waterfront characteristics. A city’s waterfront could be envisioned as a thick line, an equipped and inhabitable limen, creating a sense of belonging that could lead to significant identity by corresponding to both internal qualities of a city and external regional influences. These marginal bands can reveal the dynamic in-between-ness of being in the middle. It is an appropriate time to assess redevelopment projects on waterfront sites and shorelines to evaluate ways to recreate the image of the city, appeal to an urban population and recapture economic investment. Waterfront projects embody potential that speaks to our future and our past. In fact, a waterfront is a hybrid-scape that deals with the gap between city and water to provide alternatives for future usage.

A globalization process can be conceived as an evolving distributed algorithmic mechanism design (DAMD) that induces technology racing with natural catch-up processes of regional or country-wide competition. We describe the architecture of DAMD as the basis for development economics that lead to natural ongoing shifts in industrial performance and catch-up development. The link between implementation of DAMD and a dynamic system of country-wide industrial evolution is essential for understanding the diverse pattern of inter-country or inter-regional competition. By selectively reviewing a cross section of the catch-up literature on economic growth it is shown which essential elements of long-run sustainable growth dominate to achieve superior performance and why informationally efficient mechanism design of the Hayek-Hurwicz type is a superior vehicle for industry based economic growth in a globalized economy.

Ten years after the first introduction of Industry 4.0 at Hannover trade fair as a concept of German industry efficiency improvement, the European Commission announced a new industrial evolution – Industry 5.0 and revealed an updated representation of Industry 5.0 as a result of attaining of triad forming stability, human-centricity and industry viability. At the nexus of the fourth and fifth phases of industry evolutions, new objects arise – intelligent cyber-social ecosystems that use the strengths of cyber-physical ecosystems, changing under the influence of digital end-to-end technologies, combined with human and artificial intelligence. The purpose of this research is to present a conceptual model of an intelligent (“smart”) cyber-social ecosystem based on multimodal hyperspace within the conditions of Industry 5.0. The research methodology includes systems science, metasystemic, ecosystemic, value-based, cyber-socio-techno-cognitive approaches; concepts of platforms, creator economy, Open innovations 2.0 based on an innovative model of a quadruple helix. As a result of this research, the evolution of the establishment and development of an ecosystemic paradigm in economic science is shown. The study describes a cognitive transition from cyber-physical systems of Industry 4.0 to intelligent cyber-social ecosystems as objects of Industry 5.0. A conceptual model has been originated, in which a cyber-social ecosystem is introduced as an ecosystem of new metalevel (“metasystem”), evolving under the conditions of the transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 based on cyber-social values of human-centricity, stability and viability. The model is notable for its high level of cybernetic hyperconvergence, socioecosystemic, technological and cognitive modality to achieve ethical social goals, sustainable welfare for all humanity and each individual person, taking into account the scope of planetary capacity.
