Elucidating the origin of flowers has been a challenge in botany for a long time. One of the central questions surrounding the origin of flowers is how to interpret the carpel, especially the relationship between the phyllome part (carpel wall) and the ovule. Recently, consensus favors the carpel originating from the fusion of an ovule-bearing part and the phyllome part that subtends it. Considering the carpel is a complex organ, the accurate presentation of the anatomical structure of the carpel is necessary for resolving this question. Anaxagorea is the most basal genus in a primitive angiosperm family, Annonaceae. The conspicuous stipe at the base of each carpel makes it an ideal material for exploring the histological relationships among the receptacle, the carpel, and the ovule. In the present study, floral organogenesis and vasculature were delineated in Anaxagorea luzonensis and Anaxagorea javanica, and a three-dimensional model of the carpel vasculature was reconstructed based on serial sections. The results show that in Anaxagorea, the vasculature in the carpel branches in the form of shoots. The radiosymmetrical vasculature pattern is repeatedly presented in the receptacle, the carpel, and the funiculus of the ovule. This provides anatomical evidence of the composite origin of the carpel.

AbstractCurrent treatments of plantar fasciitis are based on the premise that the Achilles tendon (AT) and plantar fascia (PF) are mechanically directly linked, which is an area of debate. The aim of this study was to assess the morphological relationship between the AT and PF. Nineteen cadaveric feet were x-ray imaged, serially sectioned and plastinated for digital image analyses. Measurements of the AT and PF thicknesses and cross-sectional areas (CSA) were performed at their calcaneal insertion. The fiber continuity was histologically assessed in representative subsamples. Strong correlations exist between the CSA of the AT and PF at calcaneal insertion and the CSA of PF’s insertional length (r = 0.80), and between the CSAs of AT’s and PF’s insertional lengths. Further correlations were observed between AT and PF thicknesses (r = 0.62). This close morphological relationship could, however, not be confirmed through x-ray nor complete fiber continuity in histology. This study provides evidence for a morphometric relationship between the AT and PF, which suggests the presence of a functional relationship between these two structures following the biological key idea that the structure determines the function. The observed morphological correlations substantiate the existing mechanical link between the AT and PF via the posterior calcaneus and might explain why calf stretches are a successful treatment option for plantar heel pain.

AbstractTailocins are bactericidal protein complexes produced by a wide variety of bacteria that kill closely related strains and may play a role in microbial community structure. Thanks to their high specificity, tailocins have been proposed as precision antibacterial agents for therapeutic applications. Compared to tailed phages, with whom they share an evolutionary and morphological relationship, bacterially produced tailocins kill their host upon production but producing strains display resistance to self-intoxication. Though lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has been shown to act as a receptor for tailocins, the breadth of factors involved in tailocin sensitivity, and the mechanisms behind resistance to self-intoxication, remain unclear. Here, we employed genome-wide screens in four non-model pseudomonads to identify mutants with altered fitness in the presence of tailocins produced by closely related pseudomonads. Our mutant screens identified O-antigen composition and display as most important in defining sensitivity to our tailocins. In addition, the screens suggest LPS thinning as a mechanism by which resistant strains can become more sensitive to tailocins. We validate many of these novel findings, and extend these observations of tailocin sensitivity to 130 genome-sequenced pseudomonads. This work offers insights into tailocin–bacteria interactions, informing the potential use of tailocins in microbiome manipulation and antibacterial therapy.

Euphorbiaceae is one of the largest family of flowering plants, in our study different species were collected from different localities of Mizoram, the collected specimens were studied and their morphological features noted. 34 genera of Euphorbiaceae s.l were used in the study. Cladistic analysis was performed in Mesquite software and Phenetic analysis was done in NTsys software. Both analyses produce a pictorial representation in a form of a tree; cladistic analysis produce phylogenetic tree (evolutionary relationship) while phenetic analysis produce phenogram (morphological relationship). The results of the aforementioned analyses were further analysed by total evidence technique and taxonomic congruence, a phylogenetic software PAUP is used for this purpose. The resultant trees were very different and comparison was done to find correlation between evolution and morphological characters. The research finds various correlation among characters like the number of locule in ovule, phyllanthoid branching and support the inclusion of genus like Breynia, Sauropus into Phyllanthus.

Abstract Background Periductal stromal tumors of the breast are exceedingly rare biphasic breast tumors with close morphological relationship to phyllodes tumors. So far, results of genetic analyses on these tumors have not been reported. Case presentation A 50 year old female patient was admitted to the hospital because of a palpable lump in her right breast with a diameter of approximately 5–6 cm which was surgically removed by lumpectomy. Histologic examination revealed a biphasic breast tumor classified as periductal stromal tumor. Array analysis showed a pseudotetraploid tumor with a copy number of 4 for most of the chromosomes. In addition, further changes of chromosomes 1, 5, and 6 were noted but there were no mutations of MED12 as those frequently seen in fibroadenomas or phyllodes tumors. Conclusions The genetic alterations observed indicate karyotypic evolution leading to marked heterogeneity which fits with the tumor´s histologic and cytologic appearance as well as with its malignant behavior. Because of the absence of genetic similarities with phyllodes tumors, the case does not offer evidence for a common entity but rather suggests the existence of two independent entities.

SummaryThis short paper addresses a very vexed issue, to which a huge literature has been dedicated so far: the origin of the so-called gerunds and gerundives in Latin. Any previous attempt has proved un- conclusive, mainly because of the proliferation of ad hoc rules assumed to account for the nd-forms and even more because of the plethora of solutions. Instead of assuming another etymon for the sake of antago- nism, this paper intends to reassess the whole issue within Latin itself: as shown by non-standard syntacti- cal features of Plautinian and Late Latin, there is a morphological relationship between the present parti- ciple and the ndō-gerund, used to express simultaneity. Whereas the previous scholarship has taken for granted the assumption that thematic verbs used to have a *-odno- suffix (cf. OLat. -und-), which led to tautological reconstructions totally unparalleled outside Italic, I would tentatively explain the unexpected o-grade of such forms by a crossing with the old o-grade participles (cf. OLat. *uoluns ‘willing’ reflected by uoluntās). Such an approach vindicates the ancient theory according to which -andus reflects *-ātan-ó- (< PIE *-eh2-t>mṇn-ó-), provided one assumes that a reanalysis of *-ātan-ó- was made as a “suffix” *-tanos following the thematic vowel of the first conjugation, which produced *fer-e-tnó- ‘ferendus’ from thematic *fer-e- ‘to bear’.
