Thermal degradation of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was studied by using inorganic salt of aluminum triiodide (AlI3). The composites of PMMA were prepared with AlI3 by changing the concentration of the AlI3 additive from 2% to 10% (w/w). The PMMA composites with AlI3 were characterized by TGA, DTG, SEM, FTIR, HBT, and Py-GC-MS techniques. The FTIR peaks of PMMA composite at 1316, 786, and 693 cm−1 justify the chemical association between PMMA and AlI3. TGA study shows that the stability of PMMA is enhanced by the addition of the AlI3 additive. SEM analysis represented that there is a relationship between polymer and additive when they are mixed at the molecular level. The horizontal burning test (HBT) also confirmed that the AlI3 additive produced the flame retarding properties in PMMA polymer. The burning rate of composite with 10% of AlI3 additive decreases five times as much as compared to pure PMMA polymer. Py-GC-MS analysis deduced that PMMA composite produced less toxic and environment-friendly substances (CO2) by the influence of AlI3 additive as compared to neat PMMA.

The Constrained Groove Pressing (CGP) on annealed Al5083 (Al5083-O) alloy sheets by means of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) polymer is investigated in this research. Input parameters include Traverse Speed (1, 2, and 3 mm/min), Pass Number (1, 2, 3, and 4), and Lubricants (Grease, Oil, and without lubricants). Reciprocally, output parameters consist of Nanostructure (SEM and EBSD images), Hardness (HV), and Mechanical Properties – Impact Strength (kJ/m2), Tensile Strength (MPa), Young's Modulus (MPa), and Elongation (%). Revealed by the results, the impact strength is gradually improved in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th passes by respectively adding oil and grease, compared to the state of using no lubricant. The impact strength results demonstrated that the addition of grease has a significant effect on the impact strength of composite samples. In order to build a high-quality product through the CGP process, it is very important for the mechanical properties to be based on the input parameters. In CGP processes, the Continuous Dynamic Recrystallization (CDRX) is considered as the ultrafine-grained mechanism. To predict the grain size evolution and the plastic deformation rate, the combination of Finite Element (FE) method and the ETMB model is utilized. Indicating the high generalizability and reliability as compared to other modeling methods, both the experimental test results and the ETMB model data, which have a higher degree of accuracy, are presented.

This study was achieved to satisfy two goals, the first of which is to treat an environmental problem represented by the disposal of date seeds, and the second is the use of these wastes to improve some mechanical and thermal properties of poly methyl methacrylate PMMA through strengthening different proportions of the powder of date seeds. Particles of date seeds were used as a natural strengthening material for PMMA polymer, by mixing the matrix material (resin) with the hardener while still stirring continuously for a period of 10 min. After that, the samples of the reinforced material were prepared by adding the powder of date seeds, which is the reinforcing substance, with different percentages of weight fraction (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5 wt. %) and a grain size of <75 µm, while continuing to stir (10 min) for a second time. The composite samples were prepared by the Hand-Lay-up method and cut according to the standard ASTM. Thermal conductivity and some mechanical properties, such as impact strength, tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength, and hardness, were studied. An improvement was found in all properties at the reinforcement rate of 1-2 wt. %.
