This narrative essay offers an exploration of the power and importance of family origin stories as a grounding aspect of collective and individual identity for Black people. The author, drawing on his experience as a Black queer contemplative scholar and college professor, gives attention to the question of whether the truth is necessary or beneficial in the creation of family narratives and what each successive generation is allowed to know. This question is explored through the story of the unintended positive and negative consequences the author experienced as a result of submitting DNA to Ancestry.com.

People experience memories in the form of stories. Chapter 3 traces the ‘continuity of vision and action’ around which Irish republicans built their own account of history over two hundred years of militancy––how each new political incarnation and successive generation, each rooted in a different set of problems and contexts, wove their struggles into a cohesive, historical trajectory. And how discontinuity was blended into a closely guarded continuity. Meaningful schema of historical struggle are more persuasive to a population than an ideology served up cold. We chart the path from Wolfe Tone to Young Ireland to the Fenians and onto the IRB in the Easter Uprising and IRA in the Anglo-Irish civil war, and more recently the Provisional IRA.

Abstract Background Orbital/periorbital plexiform neurofibroma (OPPN) can compromise physical appearance and visual function. However, the clinical characteristics and NF1 mutation landscape in patients with heritable OPPN have not been reported. Methods The medical charts of 26 Chinese patients with OPPN from 12 families were reviewed. Mutation analysis of the entire coding region and flanking splice sites of the NF1 gene was performed using next-generation sequencing (NGS). Novel NF1 mutations were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Results Compared to the parental generation, a significantly larger proportion of OPPN patients in the successive generation presented with earlier onset (p = 0.001), amblyopia (p = 0.034), motility disorders (p = 0.009) and bony orbital expansion (p = 0.019). Six novel NF1 mutations were identified in 11 (91.67%) families, including 6 (42.9%) single-base substitutions, 4 (28.5%) splicing mutations, 3 (21.4%) frameshift deletions, and 1 (7.14%) intron mutation. Conclusions The successive generation of OPPN patients presented with earlier onset and exhibited more severe ocular signs than did their parents or grandparents. Special attention should be paid to successive generations of OPPN patients. Considering that 6 mutations were novel, comprehensive NF1 mutation analysis is required or necessary or proposed for genetic counselling.

Background and objectives: The present study was conducted to explore the mean age at menarche and associating factors among the Nepali school girls of Jorpati, Kathmandu. Materials and methods: The 500 girls of aged between 9-18 years were collected from the seven school of Gokarneshowr Municipality, Jorpati, Kathmandu after taking ethical clearance from NHRC. The healthy girls without any growth-related disorders and genetic abnormalities were included in the study. The consent was taken from the school authority and individual student by providing written consent and ascent form. The data thus collected were tabulated and analyzed by using SPSS 16. Results: The age at menarche of the respondents was 12.56 ±1.12years and menarchial age varied from 9-16 years. Similarly, the mean age at menarche of sisters and mothers were 12.96 ± 1.25 and 14.30 ± 1.58 respectively. The mean age at menarche of vegetarian group was 12.42 years as compared to non-vegetarian was 12.58 years. The lowest mean age at menarche was in Newar (12.30 years) and highest mean age at menarche in Limbu (13.33years). Followed by age at menarche in Brahmin (12.58 years), Chhetri (12.74 years), Rai (12.60 years), Lama (12.43 years), Gurung (12.66 years) and others (12.56 years). Conclusions: There was decrease in age at menarche with successive generation as a result of increase in urbanization, better dwelling and smaller family size as compared to previous generation.

Throughout American history, rights have been invented and repudiated, fought over and striven for, expanded and violated. From the nation’s beginnings, revolutionaries appealed to natural rights, but the question often became which rights and for whom? ‘Rights’ explains that what is most striking about the conflict over rights has been its democratic character. Rights are always a matter of public debate about the proper balance between order and liberty. It is a conversation that engaged the framers of the Constitution, and, as has been the case with each successive generation, Americans are continually working out the boundaries of what individual liberties are essential for a just and free society.

Traditional Knowledge is unique form of intellectual property which is owned by the community through successive generation as part of their cultural identity. This area of IP is very prone for exploitation causing damage to the economic rights of the members of the community at large. A sui generis approach is needed for the protection of TK. The present article helps in understanding the idea and scope of Traditional Knowledge (TK), word intellectual property organisation, Traditional Knowledge Digital Library.

This chapter examines the construction of the idea of pilgrimage. All three of the authors discussed in this book advocated pilgrimage as a religious ideal, but its requirement as an obligatory observance was given greater weight by authors in each successive generation, as Sino-Muslims were gradually absorbed into a global context. The perception of the hajj changed from a symbol of true belief, to a potential critical practice, and finally to an essential observance and religious duty. Wang Daiyu outlined the theological foundations of the pilgrimage and its role as a link to the time of creation and union with God. Liu Zhi underlined the physical practice of potential pilgrims when he stressed the ceremonial and experiential aspects of the pilgrimage by detailing the practices associated with it. Meanwhile, Ma Dexin emphasized the performance aspect of the journey itself, while arguing for its ability to rectify and renew religious understanding and asserting its doctrinal necessity.

AbstractA 47-year-old man underwent a left ceramic-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty with a delta ceramic femoral head. At 20 months postoperatively, he presented with acute left groin pain after he stepped over a fishing rod while on a boat. A fracture of the femoral head without trauma was diagnosed upon presentation. Manufacturing practices with improvements in each successive generation have decreased historically high ceramic fracture rates considerably. Although femoral head fractures have proven to be extremely rare both in ceramic-on-polyethylene articulations and with the newest delta femoral head, it is important to remain vigilant in all situations involving ceramics.
