The synthesis and application of layered calcium-aluminum double hydroxides (Ca-Al LDHs) for the encapsulation of organic anions is discussed. The mechanism of the encapsulation process was explained. These types of compounds have great potential and can be used in targeted therapies, including in drug dosing systems.

The organic anion balance is critical for metabolic, bioenergetic, and electrochemical processes in plant cells, controlling the quality and quantity of yield and plant stress resistance. Nevertheless, the redistribution and membrane transport of these substances in plant tissues have not been investigated in detail. The mechanism of passive anion efflux from a plant cell through the ion channels has not been established so far. Here, using the patch-clamp technique, we have characterized the ion channel-mediated conductances of ascorbate, malate, gluconate, citrate, fumarate, and pronionate in the root cells of Arabidopsis thaliana, Triticum aestivum, and Helianthus annuus. These conductances showed high permeability to ascorbate, malate, and citrate, as well as low permeability to fumarate, propionate, and gluconate. Anion channel conductances of root cells showed rapid activation kinetics and low potential dependence. They were also inhibited by 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid, suggesting that they belong to the ALMT family of anion channels found only in higher plants. Aequorin chemilu minometry was used to test the effect of organic anions on the Ca2+ signaling in root cells. Among four organic anions tested, only ascorbate induced a significant increase in the cytosolic Ca2+ activity at physiological levels (1 and 10 mM). This effect may underlie the previously unknown functions of exogenous ascorbate related to short- and long-distance signaling in higher plants.

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a cytokine originally used for its effects on the hematopoietic system, and is widely prescribed around the world. In the present study, the effects of EPO administration on p-aminohippurate (PAH, a prototype organic anion) pharmacokinetics and on the renal expression of PAH transporters were evaluated. Male Wistar rats were treated with EPO or saline (control group). After 42 h, PAH was administered, and plasma samples were obtained at different time points to determine PAH levels. PAH levels in renal tissue and urine were also assessed. The renal expression of PAH transporters was evaluated by Western blotting. EPO-treated rats showed an increase in PAH systemic clearance, in its elimination rate constant, and in urinary PAH levels, while PAH in renal tissue was decreased. Moreover, EPO administration increased the expression of the transporters of the organic anions evaluated. The EPO-induced increase in PAH clearance is accounted for by the increase in its renal secretion mediated by the organic anion transporters. The goal of this study is to add important information to the wide knowledge gap that exists regarding drug–drug interactions. Owing to the global use of EPO, these results are useful in terms of translation into clinical practice.

Co-crystallization from methanol of 3-amino-1H-pyrazole with 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid produces 3-amino-1H-pyrazol-2-ium 3,5-dinitrobenzoate monohydrate, C3H6N3 +·C7H3N2O6 −·H2O, (I), while similar co-crystallization of this pyrazole with an equimolar quantity of fumaric acid produces bis(3-amino-1H-pyrazol-2-ium) fumarate–fumaric acid (1/1), 2C3H6N3 +·C4H2O4 2−·C4H4O4, (II). The reaction of 3-amino-1H-pyrazole with a dilute solution of nitric acid in methanol yields a second, orthorhombic polymorph of 3-amino-1H-pyrazol-2-ium nitrate, C3H6N3 +·NO3 −, (III). In each of (I)–(III), the bond distances in the cation provide evidence for extensive delocalization of the positive charge. In each of (I) and (II), an extensive series of O—H...O and N—H...O hydrogen bonds links the components into complex sheets, while in the structure of (III), the ions are linked by multiple N—H...O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional arrangement. Comparisons are made with the structures of some related compounds.

After short historical introduction, interfacial mechanism of phase transfer catalyzed (PTC) reactions of organic anions, induced by aqueous NaOH or KOH in two-phase systems is formulated. Subsequently experimental evidence that supports the interfacial deprotonation as the key initial step of these reactions is presented.
