The term “Salus per aquam (SPA) therapies” refers to therapeutic pathways that includes mud therapy. The therapeutic efficacy of a peloid depends on its chemical and mineralogical composition, as well as its technological properties. Considering the increasing use of clay-based products, it becomes essential to characterize peloids from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. Therefore, this research project aimed to develop a protocol that allows characterization of the chemical-physical composition of sludges collected from different areas of the Homogeneous Euganean Hills Hydromineral Basin (B.I.O.C.E.). The study established a comparative study both between different matrices and between the same matrices at different maturation times, including also a comparison with an industrialized product, that can be used at home, which maintains the characteristics of a natural mud. This research was developed studying the pH, grain size distribution, and chemical and mineralogical composition. Peloids are characterized by a neutral/basic pH and are divided into two categories from a granulometric point of view: The chemical composition allowed observation of numerous correlations between oxides present in the samples and to quantify the presence of heavy metals. Mineralogical analysis made it possible to identify and compare the composition of each sample, also according to the maturation time. Thanks to the methods adopted, important correlations were achieved.

Bayat rugs weaved with different madders can be used without fading their colors almost 100 years. The study aimed to record how to get madder by traditional methods from local plants, give stories of rug motives and present an overview of the medicinal uses of dyes plants collected in Afyonkarahisar, Inner-West Anatolia, Turkey. The study was conducted in both 11 villages and downtown of Bayat borough of Afyonkarahisar in 2013-2014. A total 150 women, aged between 17-25, were interviewed and observations were photographed. The rugs are completely 100% sheep wool and strings for weaving prepared traditionally by special spinning methods. The used plants to obtain the madders were determined. It was understood that in early August and September, plants give better colors and tones. These plants have also been used for medicinal purposes by the locals. Bayat people get non-fading colors from 11 plants (Allium cepa L., Berberis crataegina L., Papaver rhoeas, Papaver somniferum L., Malva silvestris L., Morus nigra L., Cistus laurifolius L., Quercus ithaburensis Decne. subsp. macrolepis (Kotschy) Hedge et Yalt, Rubia tinctorum L., Juglans regia L., Indigofera tinctoria L.) belonged to ten families. The plant organs used are root, shell, cupula, leaf, young shoot, and aerial parts of the plants. A natural mud is also used as alum in this region that provides to create dark colors, and prevents mixing the colors. It also inhibits fading the colors in the rugs’ texture. It was also recorded that different motives in Bayat Rugs have also interesting historical stories.

The mud solution was isolated from mud in Ulziit lake and have been determined their chemical composition. Mud solution was obtained by pressing method, water soluble by extracting with water.Yield of solution (in natural mud) was 18.1%, yield of water extract was 17.05%, dry residue in mud solution and water extract were 18.37% and 17.96%, respectively. In mud solution were anions with following concentration: Cl- (52895 mg/l), SO42-(2650 mg/l), NO2- (11.2 mg/l), NO3-(0.0 mg/l), HCO3- (1830 mg/l), kations with following concentration: NH4+- (2.4 mg/l) , Fe3+-(0.0 mg/l), Fe2+-(0.0 mg/l); in water extract were anions with following concentration: Cl- (36476 mg/l), SO42-(2100 mg/l), NO2- (0.0 mg/l), NO3-(0.0mg/l), HCO3- (1982.5 mg/l) kations with following concentration: Ca2+(400.8 mg/l), Mg2+(8208 mg/l), NH4+- (2.1mg/l) , Fe3+-(0.0 mg/l), Fe2+-(0.0 mg/l). The content of macro and microelements in mud solution was 0.0003->3%.The mud solution of Ulziit lake was extracted by chloroform and investigated by chromato-mass-spectral method. This analysis shows that mud solution contains hydrocarbons 14.87%, dialkylphtalates 48.15%, organic acids 36.97%, respectively.

Based on these studies we conclude that this peloid belongs to hydrogen sulfide muddy type according to the international classification. The content of macro and microelements in mud was 0.0001-20%.Mud solution was obtained by pressing method and investigated composition of solution by a wet chemical method. Yield of solution was 9.09 % / in natural mud /, pH 8.28, specific weight 1.03 g/sm3. For extract we have used hexane, chloroform, acetone, and mixture of ethanol; benzene (1:9). The biochemical composition (proteins, lipid, ash and moisture) of different parts of the body (gill, meat, egg) of fattened and natural mud crab Scylla serrata was determined. Twenty four samples of S. serrata (12 from wild & 12 from fattening farm) of different sizes and sexes (half of the sample is male) were used in this study. The mean protein and lipid contents are significantly (p<0.05) higher in fattened crabs than natural in natural crabs regardless of size and sexes.  Moisture and ash were higher in natural crab than in fattened ones. The highest and lowest moisture content was noticed in gills and eggs in both natural and fattened crabs. Protein and lipid contents were comparatively higher in eggs than in other body parts. Female crabs contained high protein and lipid than males in both natural and fattened crabs.  From the results of this study it may considered that fattened crab might be comparatively superior to natural crabs as they appear to provide higher levels of protein and fat  for human nutrition. Keywords: Biochemical composition; Natural and Fattened mud crab; Scylla serrata   © 2013 JSR Publications.
