This research focuses on ethnocentrism in Edward Zwick’s The Last Samurai. It is intended to identify how ethnocentrism is depicted and reflected in the life of samurai in the movie The Last Samurai. The ethnocentrism theory by William G. Sumner will be used to analyze the movie. The data were obtained by watching the film, reading the movie script and cinematographic elements, identifying data based on the topic of study, and categorizing the data with respect to the theoretical framework. Based on the analysis, the findings show that there are three aspects of ethnocentrism; first, loyal to in-group norms; second, express in-group pride; third, judge and underestimate the out-group. These three features of ethnocentrism create a deep perception in their dominant culture to others.

The lack of mastery of mufradāt is one of the factors of the difficulty in mastering language skills, and Madrasah in particular does not have material specifically devoted to mufradāt. Mufradāt is taught along with language skills. This is intended to help students focus on the mahārah which must be mastered. This article aims to increase the understanding and mastery of mufradāt in Madrasah Aliyah in grade 11 of MAN 2 Padang Religious Program. The problem that arises in this school is the lack of mastery of mufradāt  in students which makes it difficult for them to understand teaching materials. Based on that, this research is limited to three important points; the technique of using film media in learning  mufradāt,, the levels of students' mastery of  mufradāt  before the action, and the level of mastery of students in mufradāt  after the action. The study used classroom action research method which is carried out in two cycles. The results of the study show that the steps in using film media have several points, giving a list of mufradāt, watching the film, reading the text hiwār from the film, giving difficult vocabulary and test. In the first cycle the value of students previously 66% to decreased to 58.37%, while in the second cycle increased to 86.46%. Keywords: Film, Arabic Learning, Arabic Vocabulary

Recent results in the field of film dosimetry demonstrated that the Green–Saunders equation, a solution of the logistic equation describing phenomena of kinetics of chemical reactions, is the absolute calibration function for all radiochromic film types. Taking advantage of the new opto-electronics-based radiochromic film reading method, which allows real-time measurements of the spectral response of radiochromic films, we confirm that the film darkening is ruled by the Green–Saunders equation independently both from the reading instrument or the choice of the observable used for the calibration. In order to demonstrate it, we exposed an XR-QA2 Gafchromic film to 90Sr/90Y beta rays up to 1400 mGy. Film spectra are recorded in real-time. The calibration is performed by means of two analytic methods: evaluation of the integral under the curves from 500 nm to 645 nm and evaluation of the intensity at 570, 600 and 643 nm. Experimental data fit to the Green–Saunders equation for both methods.

FILM READING OF SHAKESPEARE. ADAPTATION AS INTERPRETATIONThe text is a review of a book entitled Lustra i echa. Filmowe adaptacje dzieł Williama Shakespeare’a Mirrors and Echoes. Film Adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Works edited by Olga Katafiasz. The monograph is a compilation of studies and essays prepared by filmologists, theatre studies and culture studies scholars referring to various film adaptations of William Shakespeare’s works. At the beginning the reviewer reminds film theories concerning film adaptation and the output of filmology on the topic of film adaptations of Shakespeare’s works. The author situates the book in view within the map of past and update researches of both types and evaluates their quality as a part of them. She underlines that the variety of points of view and research approaches to Shakespeare himself and to his oeuvre in Olga Katafiasz’s elaboration highlight the distinctive place of Shakespeare in nowadays culture, including pop-culture. Moreover, the variety of scholar and artistic approaches to the master from Stratford reveals also cognitive and creative abilities of film art and makes clear cultural productivity and actuality of Shakespeare. The latter means first of all possible achievement of historical and cultural accommodation to different discourses as well as of being a tool of update cultural communication. Namely in Marczak’s opinion Mirrors and Echoes… provides a practical implementation of the film theory of adaptation as interpretation of the source text and endeavors to be a response to those who ask whether Shakespeare remains a vivid author, delivering important questions and important answers for human beings of 21st century.
