Various textures are fabricated by a picosecond laser machine on the surfaces of circular stainless steel specimens. Vibrational and tribological effects of laser surface textures are investigated by means of a tribometer and a data acquisition and signal processing (DASP) system. Experimental results show that surface textures can reduce the coefficients of friction (COFs), enhance the wear resistance, and improve the dynamical performance of frictional surfaces. In this study, the surface with micro circular dimples in diameter of 150 μm or textured area density of 25% has the best tribological and dynamical performance. Compared with the non-textured surface, the surface with circular dimples in diameter of 150 μm and 15% textured area density has 27% reduction of COFs, 95% reduction of frictional vibrations, and 66% reduction of frictional noise. The frictional vibrations and noise in the sliding contacts can be effectively reduced by adding graphene to the lubrication oil, and the surface textures enhance the frictional noise reduction performance of lubrication.

For the purpose of extracting the frictional vibration characteristics of the friction pair during friction and wear in different friction states, the friction and wear tests of friction pair in different friction states were conducted on a testing machine. Higher-dimensional fractal and multifractal characteristics hidden in time series can be examined by multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MFDFA) method. The frictional vibration time-domain signals, the friction coefficient signals and the frictional vibration frequency-domain signals were analyzed and multifractal spectra were acquired by using the MFDFA algorithm. According to the spectra, the multifractal spectrum parameters of these signals were calculated to realize the quantitative characterization of frictional vibration characteristics in different friction states. The analysis shows that it is symmetric in the variation trends of the multifractal spectrum parameters of the frictional vibration signals and the friction coefficient data. Based on the multifractal spectrum parameters of frictional vibration, the principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm was applied to establish the friction state recognition method. The results show that the multifractal spectra and their parameters can characterize the frictional vibrations, and the friction state recognition can be realized based on the multifractal spectrum parameters of frictional vibrations.

This paper presents a new theory on frictional vibrations of paper-based friction material considering the interaction between its deformation and the consequent lubricant flow inside it. A frictional vibration model is proposed, in which a poroelastic body saturated by a viscous liquid is introduced, and then a stability criterion is derived on the assumption that vibrations in two directions, tangential and normal, are coupled. Compared with the experiment, it is confirmed that the proposed criterion can predict the stability limit more accurately than the conventional one, which does not take the deformation of the friction material into account and depends only on the slope of friction coefficient versus sliding velocity. Based on the present criterion, influences of material properties on the stability to frictional vibrations are discussed.
