In burst-prone deep underground engineering, seismic waves generated from a near-field ground motion event may play a critical role in causing localized rockburst damage. Accurate estimation of near-field ground motions around excavations is important for seismic hazard risk assessment and dynamic rock support design in underground engineering. During the excavation of an underground cavern, stress redistribution in the surrounding rock leads to the formation of damage zones, including the excavation damage zone (EDZ) and excavation fracture zone (EFZ). The poor properties of the rock in the damage zones cause the wave velocities of the rock mass to decrease and the dynamic wave interaction to change, thereby affecting the ground motions around the excavation. This paper studies the near-field ground motion behavior and reveals the control effect of the seismic wave velocity in the damage zones on the near-field ground motions by the aid of the finite fracturing source model (FFSSM). The research results provide a new knowledge of the influence of excavation disturbance on the ground motion distribution around the excavation, and provide new ideas for the seismic hazard risk assessment and prevention in underground engineering.

Abstract For the design and operation of Oil and Gas (O&G) facilities, a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) should be performed to quantify the risk of major accidents due to multiple hazards and sources at the plant level, thus allowing the effective identification and allocation of safety barriers. In this work, a novel approach for the multi-hazard and multi-source aggregation of risks is proposed, accounting for the uncertainties typically unexpressed in a conventional QRA (both on the frequency and severity of the accidental scenarios). The multi-hazard risk assessment framework proposed is applied to assess the Location-Specific Individual Risk (LSIR) for a representative Upstream O&G plant (case study), using a model based on multistate Bayesian Networks (BNs) for different functional units, each one undergoing an initiating event of Loss Of Primary Containment (LOPC). Estimates of frequency and severity for each possible accident scenario are aggregated to eventually calculate the overall LSIR. Moreover, LSIR's confidence intervals are provided to describe the uncertainty associated to the estimates, and the frequency and severity contributions to risk are derived for targeted prioritization of the safety barriers in view of the risk reduction.

Climate change is already being felt in Europe, unequivocally affecting the regions’ geo-structures. Concern over this is rising, as reflected in the increasing number of studies on the subject. However, the majority of these studies focused only on slopes and on a limited geographical scope. In this paper, we attempted to provide a broader picture of potential climate change impacts on the geo-structures in Europe by gathering the collective view of geo-engineers and geo-scientists in several countries, and by considering different geo-structure types. We also investigated how geo-structural concerns are being addressed in national adaptation plans. We found that specific provisions for geo-structural adaptation are generally lacking and mainly come in the form of strategies for specific problems. In this regard, two common strategies are hazard/risk assessment and monitoring, which are mainly implemented in relation to slope stability. We recommend that in future steps, other geo-structures are likewise given attention, particularly those assessed as also potentially significantly affected by climate change. Countries considered in this study are mainly the member countries of the European Large Geotechnical Institutes Platform (ELGIP).
