The aim of this article is to provide a critical revision of the notion of “reception” of academic works in general and of the histories of the sciences in particular. This will broaden the scope of the notion in a way that can include the new and unexpected receptions of the history of science in Latin America. To achieve this, I propose the concept of “figural co-production”, which I understand as a set of situated practices where the available cultural resources are appropriated, and that allows for productive interactions between heterogeneous collectives that aim for the configuration of knowledge. This theoretical proposal enables me to analyze Verónica Tozzi Thompson’s appropriation of the works of Steven Shapin and Martin Kusch in her pragmatist approach to the philosophy of history. This appropriation, I contend, can be seen as a case of reception of the shapinian history of science in Argentina.

Abstract Modality is a generic concept of wave-optics at the basis of optical information and communications. One of the challenges of photonics technologies based on optical orbital angular momentum consists in the production of a modal content for both the azimuthal and radial degrees of freedom. This basically requires shaping the complex amplitude of an incident light beam, which is usually made up from adaptive spatial light modulators or bespoke devices. Here, we report on the experimental attempt of a recent theoretical proposal [Opt. Lett. 42, 1966 (2017)] toward the production of various optical vortex modes of the Laguerre–Gaussian type relying on the spin–orbit interaction of light. This is done in the visible domain from optical elements made out of silica glass. The idea consists in exploiting the combined effects of azimuthally-varying geometric phase with that of radially-varying propagation features. The proposed approach can be readily extended to any wavelength as well as to other families of optical modes, although some dynamic phase problems remain to be solved to make it a turnkey technology.

AbstractCritical quantum metrology, which exploits quantum critical systems as probes to estimate a physical parameter, has gained increasing attention recently. However, the critical quantum metrology with a continuous quantum phase transition (QPT) is experimentally challenging since a continuous QPT only occurs at the thermodynamic limit. Here, we propose an adiabatic scheme on a perturbed Ising spin model with a first-order QPT. By introducing a small transverse magnetic field, we can not only encode an unknown parameter in the ground state but also tune the energy gap to control the evolution time of the adiabatic passage. Moreover, we experimentally implement the critical quantum metrology scheme using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and show that at the critical point the precision achieves the Heisenberg scaling as 1/T. As a theoretical proposal and experimental implementation of the adiabatic scheme of critical quantum metrology and its advantages of easy implementation, inherent robustness against decays and tunable energy gap, our adiabatic scheme is promising for exploring potential applications of critical quantum metrology on various physical systems.

There has recently been a growing interest to investigate rhythm cognition in nonhuman animals as a way of tracking the evolutionary origins of human musicality - i.e., the ability to perceive, enjoy and produce music. During the last two decades, there has been an explosion of theoretical proposals aimed at explaining why and how humans have evolved into musical beings, and the empirical comparative research has also gained momentum. In this paper, we focus on the rhythmic component of musicality, and review functional and mechanistic theoretical proposals on abilities regarded as prerequisites for perceiving and producing rhythmic structures similar to those encountered in music. For each theoretical proposal we also review supporting and contradictory empirical findings. To acknowledge that the evolutionary study of musicality requires an interdisciplinary approach, our review strives to cover perspectives and findings from as many disciplines as possible. We conclude with a research agenda that highlights relevant, yet thus far neglected topics in the comparative and evolutionary study of rhythm cognition. Specifically, we call for a widened research focus that will include additional rhythmic abilities besides entrainment, additional channels of perception and production besides the auditory and vocal ones, and a systematic focus on the functional contexts in which rhythmic signals spontaneously occur. With this expanded focus, and drawing from systematic observation and experimentation anchored in multiple disciplines, animal research is bound to generate many important insights into the adaptive pressures that forged the component abilities of human rhythm cognition and their (socio-)cognitive and (neuro-)biological underpinnings.

AbstractCooper-pair distribution function, $$D_{cp}(\omega ,T_c)$$ D cp ( ω , T c ) , is a recent theoretical proposal that reveals information about the superconductor state through the determination of the spectral regions where Cooper pairs are formed. This is built from the well-established Eliashberg spectral function and phonon density of states, calculated by first-principles. From this function is possible to obtain the $$N_{cp}$$ N cp parameter, which is proportional to the total number of Cooper pairs formed at a critical temperature $$T_c$$ T c . Herein, we reported $$D_{cp}(\omega ,T_c)$$ D cp ( ω , T c ) function of the compressed $$D_3S$$ D 3 S and $$H_3S$$ H 3 S high-$$T_c$$ T c conventional superconductors, including the effect of stable sulfur isotopes in $$H_3S$$ H 3 S . $$D_{cp}(\omega ,T_c)$$ D cp ( ω , T c ) suggests that the vibration energy range of 10–70 meV is where the Cooper pairs are possible for these superconductors, pointing out the possible importance of the low-energy region on the electron–phonon superconductivity. This has been confirmed by the fact that a simple variation in the low-frequency region induced for the substitution of S atoms in $$H_3S$$ H 3 S by its stable isotopes can lead to important changes in $$T_c$$ T c . The results also show proportionality between $$N_{cp}$$ N cp parameter and experimental or theoretical $$T_c$$ T c values.

The article is a theoretical proposal which aims to create an alternative framework for mapping postclassical cinema. This framework is based on establishing various modes of relations between narration and spectacle, especially those represented by mind-game films and post-plot films. Instead of considering narration and spectacle as opposition, I suggest redescribing their complementary dynamics. I argue that there is visible feedback between mind-game films and the cinema of digital attractions, which I see as complementary processes of making “spectacular mind games” and “mind-gaming the spectacles”. The article contains an analysis of similar types of cinematic experiences delivered by “narration” and “attractions” and indicates the mutual influences between these two phenomena. Both narration and attraction may bring similar, affective sensations: the notion of shock and dissonance, discomfort, astonishment, kinesthetic impulse or cognitive stimulation. As for the article’s conclusion: postclassical cinema variously reshapes the distribution of narration and attraction. Mind-game films are becoming cinematic spectacles. On the other hand, more and more “post-plot” blockbusters are introducing the “mind-gaming the spectacle” strategy, and are engaging viewers with “cognitive” attractions as well.

Purpose – This research aims to recognize the performance indicators relating to the management of species reported in the literature.Design/methodology/approach – It is an exploratory and descriptive research. It assumes the qualitative characteristics. We presented a theoretical proposal of indicators and sufficient dimensions to manage an IES. The board was selected by convenience. The expert group was composed of people who have expertise in managing performance. Findings – We found indicators that were added according to the suggestion of the respondents, resulting in 65 indicators, divided into 9 dimensions. The model contemplates the dimensions: Economic; Internationalization and research; Student/Client; Market; Academia; Operational; Human Resources; Society/extension and Sustainability.Research limitations/implications – As limitations of the research, there is the possibility of some work on indicators that have not been identified at this stage of research, and also the choice of specialists.Practical implications – This study presents the determinants of business performance. The indicators that should be used for each type of organization are of utmost importance and were highlighted as one of the challenges of future research in the management of organizational performance.Social implications – In the Brazilian literature, 75% of the surveys do not address performance management holistically, thus reinforcing this study's importance and originality.Originality/value – Previous literature were identified 57 performance indicators, distributed in six 6 dimensions based on the concepts of multidimensionality. The work found indicators were added according to the suggestion of the interviewees, resulting in 65 indicators divided into 9 dimensions.

Statistics education has investigated how to promote formal inferential reasoning from informal inferential reasoning. Nevertheless, there is still a need for proposals that explore and progressively develop inferential reasoning of students and teachers. Concerning this, the objective of this article is to characterize the inferential reasoning that secondary school mathematics teachers show in the practices that they develop to solve problems regarding the Chi-square statistic. To achieve this, we use theoretical and methodological notions introduced by the onto-semiotic approach of mathematics knowledge and instruction. In particular, we have taken a theoretical proposal of levels of inferential reasoning for the Chi-square statistic. Based on the results, the main conclusion was that the proposal above effectively predicted the teachers’ practices, allowing us to distinguish characteristic elements of the levels of inferential reasoning.
