Sundarbans as the primary coastal defense of Bangladesh against various natural disaster encounters recurrent homelessness due to these calamities, resulting in cutting down forests for housing materials from the only nearby resource. The traditional vernacular practice and socio-cultural studies show a symbiotic relationship between the forest and inhabitants, but the ecological imbalance created by climate change made life difficult for them, whose livelihood solely depends on the forest as well. The inability to reuse the building materials any disaster causes an ever-increasing cycle of carbon footprint. Regarding these, the non-experimental research aims to build such a homestead prototype that creates an adaptable solution. The existing building practices consist of non-reusable materials, poor structural integrity, and lack of sustainable approaches, thus unfit to withstand the increasing disasters and calamities. The approach discussed here utilizes plastic waste, drums, bamboo for disaster adaptability, structural flexibility, rainwater harvesting, solar, and biogas energy for a sustainable lifestyle. So, the goal is to provide a sustainable solution for the economically challenged population. This prototype creates an adaptive strategy for mitigating the disastrous events in Sundarbans to promote resilience and sustainability.

One of the goals of the MICADO Euratom project is to monitor the gamma-rays emitted by radioactive waste drums in storage sites on a medium to long term basis. For this purpose, 36 low-cost gamma-ray counters were designed and built to act as a demonstrator. These counters, named SciFi, are based on a scintillating fiber readout at each end by a silicon photomultiplier, assembled in a robust arrangement in the form of 80 cm long pipes. Several counters will be placed around radwaste packages in order to monitor the gamma dose-rate by collecting a continuous data stream. The 36 sensors were thoroughly tested with a 22Na and a 137Cs gamma-ray sources, and with an AmBe neutron and gamma-ray source, the results are quite satisfactory, and the next step will be the test in a real environment.

In the framework of the MICADO (Measurement and Instrumentation for Cleaning And Decommissioning Operations) European Union (EU) project, aimed at the full digitization of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste management, a set of 32 solid state thermal neutron detectors named SiLiF has been built and characterized. MICADO encompasses a complete active and passive characterization of the radwaste drums with neutrons and gamma rays, followed by a longer-term monitoring phase. The SiLiF detectors are suitable for the monitoring of nuclear materials and can be used around radioactive waste drums possibly containing small quantities of actinides, as well as around spent fuel casks in interim storage or during transportation. Suitable polyethylene moderators can be exploited to better shape the detector response to the expected neutron spectrum, according to Monte Carlo simulations that were performed. These detectors were extensively tested with an AmBe neutron source, and the results show a quite uniform and reproducible behavior.

A usual way of radioactive waste drums characterization combines gamma spectrometry measurements with passive neutron measurements. The CEA facility for waste drum characterization hereby described has been operated for more than 30 years. In this framework, a large variety of waste drums has been characterized in terms of spectra, densities, materials and radioactivity levels. As the facility was first dedicated to measure Intermediate-Level Long-lived Waste, the neutron background was not significant compared to expected neutron emitters from waste packages. These last years, Dismantling and Decommissioning operations have been advanced in this CEA site to the point where they are now associated with mostly Very Low Level Waste production. Therefore, neutron background is becoming significant. Using the large variety of past characterized drums brings the opportunity to study this background. The present study has been led over a sample of almost 1500 drums over a wide waste density range. These drums have been selected over the last 20 years by taking into account only one criterion: without any expected neutron emitters from the waste itself. This work first presents the technical settings of the measurement facility before describing the raw data of the measurements. Next, a statistical study over raw data enables to better acknowledge the neutron spallation background behavior in terms of time, density and materials. Ensues a way of using this new knowledge in order to improve how to take into account neutron spallation background in passive neutron measurements of packages of low actinides activities and high densities.
