The paper presents a theoretical analysis of heat transfer in a heated tube bank, based on the Nusselt number computation as one of the basic dimensionless criteria. To compute the Nusselt number based on the heat transfer coefficient, the reference temperature must be determined. Despite the value significance, the quantity has several different formulations, which leads to discrepancies in results. This paper investigates the heat transfer of the inline and staggered tube banks, made up of 20 rows, at a constant tube diameter and longitudinal and transverse pitch. Both laminar and turbulent flows up to Re = 10,000 are considered, and the effect of gravity is included as well. Several locations for the reference temperature are taken into consideration on the basis of the heretofore published research, and the results in terms of the overall Nusselt number are compared with those obtained by the experimental correlations. This paper provides the most suitable variant for a unique reference temperature, in terms of a constant value for all tube angles, and the Reynolds number ranges of 100–1000 and 1000–10,000 which are in good agreement with the most frequently used correlating equations.

Abstract Crossflow over a row of cylinders with a close space ratio presents an asymmetric configuration with large and narrow wakes behind the cylinders. The wake interaction can impact the vibration response of the cylinders. In tube banks, the impact results in damages to the equipment. The present experimental study aims to analyze the influence of close space observed in a single row of cylinders on the flow-induced vibration. The study compares a single row with fixed cylinders and a single row with one cylinder free to vibrate. The cylinder free to vibrate is tested in four configurations. The study was conducted with an aerodynamic channel with a cross-section of 0.193 × 0.146 m and smooth cylinders with a diameter of 25.1 mm, space ratio is 1.26. The measurements are executed with hot-wire anemometry and accelerometers, for the cases with one cylinder free to vibrate and with hot-wire anemometry and microphones for the case with all fixed cylinders. The Reynolds number ranges between 1.0 × 104 and 4.5 × 104, obtained with the reference flow velocity, measured with a Pitot tube, and the cylinder diameter. The comparison between the wake response for single row fixed and single row and free to vibrate are executed using Fourier transform and Wavelet Transform. The comparison of the results with the models presented in the literature to predict the elastic instability of the fluid in a single row of cylinders is performed.

Fluid can flow in one-directional (normal flow) or oscillatory conditions. Fluid flow in some energy system involved oscillatory flow condition. The use of vortex generator has been proven to improve heat transfer in the case of one-directional flow but the impact of vortex generator in oscillatory flow condition is yet unknown. This study focusses on the heat transfer performance across a heated tube banks using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. Two flow conditions were modelled: steady one-directional and oscillatory flow conditions. Two-dimensional CFD models of steady flow and oscillatory flow were solved using the SST k-? turbulence model for two different cases of heated tube banks with and without the vortex generators. The heat transfer performance for both flow conditions were analysed by considering a heat transfer parameter known as Colburn-j factor. Results showed that the use of a vortex generator increased the heat transfer enhancement, regardless of the flow conditions. However, it is also noted that the heat transfer behaviour in a steady flow and an oscillatory flow is not the same, especially with the appearance of secondary flows in the system. The difference is discussed with respect to dimensionless quantity of Colburn j-factor, the non-dimensionless quantity, and the amplitude of temperature field. The result indicates that the heat equation in the steady flow condition is not very suitable to be directly used in oscillatory flow conditions. Appropriate heat equation needs to be properly addressed for situations that involve oscillatory flow motion.
