The growing level of wastewater as well as pollution of freshwater by various bacteria are essential worldwide issues which have to be solved. In this contribution, nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 films deposited by magnetron sputtering on high-density polystyrene (HDPE) beads were applied as floating photocatalysts for Salmonella Typhimurium bacterial inactivation in water for the first time. Additionally, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye in the presence of HDPE beads with TiO2 film under UV-B irradiation was investigated. The suitability to adopt such floating photocatalyst structures for practical applications was tested in cycling experiments. The detailed surface morphology, crystal structure, elemental mapping, surface chemical composition and bond analysis of deposited TiO2 films were investigated by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope techniques. The bacterial viability as well as MB decomposition experiments showed promising results by demonstrating that 6% of bacterial colonies were formed after the first run and only about 1% after the next four runs, which is an appropriate outcome for practical applications. NPN uptake results showed that the permeability of the outer membrane was significantly increased as well.

In this study, various solid uranium oxycompounds and TiO2-supported materials based on nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 are synthesized using uranyl nitrate hexahydrate as a precursor. All uranium-contained samples are characterized using N2 adsorption, XRD, UV–vis, Raman, TEM, XPS and tested in the oxidation of a volatile organic compound under visible light of the blue region to find correlations between their physicochemical characteristics and photocatalytic activity. Both uranium oxycompounds and TiO2-supported materials are photocatalytically active and are able to completely oxidize gaseous organic compounds under visible light. If compared to the commercial visible-light TiO2 KRONOS® vlp 7000 photocatalyst used as a benchmark, solid uranium oxycompounds exhibit lower or comparable photocatalytic activity under blue light. At the same time, uranium compounds contained uranyl ion with a uranium charge state of 6+, exhibiting much higher activity than other compounds with a lower charge state of uranium. Immobilization of uranyl ions on the surface of nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 allows for substantial increase in visible-light activity. The photonic efficiency of reaction over uranyl-grafted TiO2, 12.2%, is 17 times higher than the efficiency for commercial vlp 7000 photocatalyst. Uranyl-grafted TiO2 has the potential as a visible-light photocatalyst for special areas of application where there is no strict control for use of uranium compounds (e.g., in spaceships or submarines).

Pure and Fe(III)-doped TiO2 suspensions were prepared by the sol gel method with the use of titanium isopropoxide (Ti(OPri)4) as precursor material. The properties of doped materials were compared to TiO2 properties based on the characterization by thermal analysis (TG-DTA and DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry and spectroscopy measurements (FTIR). Both undoped and doped TiO2 suspensions were used to coat metallic substrate as a mean to make thin-film electrodes. Thermal treatment of the precursors at 400°C for 2 h in air resulted in the formation of nanocrystalline anatase TiO2. The thin-film electrodes were tested with respect to their photocatalytic performance for degradation of a textile dye in aqueous solution. The plain TiO2 remains as the best catalyst at the conditions used in this report.
